Aural Imbalance - Spiral (6:53) 24Bit A1 - Better Day Instant head-nodding is the first order of this stunning and varied opener to both the EP and the label, as Better Day begins with delightfully punchy breaks chopped to perfection, dancing over thick, warm bassline hits before vibrant melodies take shape. Soon the track is drenched in luscious atmospherics, invoking a sense of liberation while the beat pattern buries itself in the memory and the listener drifts into the kind of serenity only Aural Imbalance can craft. A2 - Scratch The Surface It is night. Light has long since faded and darkness has taken the horizon, but not all are content to rest. Cymbals and fluttering textures gather and spiral with growing curiosity, joined by electronic harmonies and dusky breakbeats seizing the ears. Gradually, the forming aural throng is layered with intricate layers of inquisitive detail, keys and synths wistfully encouraging all to join them in the post-twilight festivities. AA1 - Different Times Fans of late 90’s atmospherics will truly rejoice here as Different Times takes us right back to that classic era. Echoing cymbals and hi hats build up the timeless vibe with knowing, purposeful 808 bass before an addictive crisp drum loop ushers the pace forward bound. The piece soon ramps up with dreamy, blippy melodies hugged by vast washes of whirling synthwork. AA2 - Spiral Closing the EP is Spiral, a track which fuses musical influences far & wide. A catchy, almost trancey melody introduces dense jungly analogue breakbeats with stuttering sci-fi FX cascading in the background. The solid thump of the distinctive kickdrum asserts a weight to the composition which welcomes element after element of eclectic ethereal energy to the mix, gelled together perfectly to form a delightful crescendo - a track you won’t forget. A banger for the club as well as the ‘phones. A2 - Tidal Lock Distinctive thumping quadruple kicks thunder like a furious heartbeat as Tidal Lock mixes up the vibe and experiments with off-key tones and delivers a neurotic energy to the breaks. Rapid hats and snares accelerate the mix with deep undertone sub bass, as ASC crafts a cacophony of detail and delirium to a track that somehow fuses both calm and a tenacious ferocity in one. Unique, stylish and a joy to listen to. AA1 - Centurion A DJ-friendly intro opens Centurion with initially simple breaks which are soon joined with detail and a forceful finesse. Curious, inquisitive FX and melodies bristle melancholically as a stunning deep bassline seizes the attention and the atmosphere elevates. Familiar classic atmospheric signatures add to the complexity later in the track, with all layers continuing to breathe throughout. AA2 - Nexus ASC concludes the EP with a deep, rapidfire workout in Nexus - a track which quickly exudes a moody, tense vibe driven by a nervous vigor - inviting you to explore its immersive tapestry of quality modern atmospheric breaks. A2 - Cosmic Telemetry Continuing a fine exploration of sounds of yesteryear, Cosmic Telemetry showcases a delicately jazzy vibe with breaks that hark back to classics such as Planetary Funk Alert, modernised with an atmospheric twist. Rolling out with a plethora of familiar samples and keys as synths elevate and rise in the backdrop, Cosmic Telemetry is an elegant pastiche for the ears and the dancefloor alike. AA1 - Papillon Clean old school breaks introduce Papillon, an earthy track with deep room-filling bass underpinning tight analogue drums, playfully decorated with an assortment of wavy synths, horns and flutes, plinky melodies and delicious female vocal samples in the breakdown before Senses subtly edits the breaks as a voice declares “I’m all yours” to synths pitching up and down at will to great effect. AA2 - Past Lives Closing the EP on an intensely atmospheric tip, Past Lives is full of heavily reminiscent rhythms from the classic 90s atmospheric era with sharp drum samples and ethereal synthwork that transport you to a nostalgic dreamscape, seamlessly blending the past and the present with classic 808 basslines and fluid, harmonious strings that perfectly complement the dramatic, all-encompassing padwork. A2 - False Awakening Yearning atmospheric padwork introduces False Awakening, a deep and compelling piece which utilises the Apache break to great effect, with a myriad of filtered samples ducking and weaving around the break. Female vocals set a sorrowful tone, delicately punctuating the stirring atmosphere as the breakbeats shudder and dart with a suitably wrought 808 bassline complementing the intensity of the track. AA1 - Six Below Law continues the strikingly atmospheric tones with Six Below, a track with a distinctive organ melody sitting atop a backdrop of darkly FX and deep, expansive pads which blanket the soundscape. For the breaks, we are treated to a very danceable two-step pattern of old school drums, guaranteed to move you and your audience while a subtle, deep bassline rumbles along below. AA2 - Ascent Closing the EP with a viscerally brooding and orchestral vibe, Law utilises a wide array of production techniques with Ascent, drizzled with menacing, echoed vocal hits, understated filtered melodies and inspired female vocal samples. A1 - Set In Motion Shimmering melodic keys and light hi-hats quietly introduce Set In Motion, as Eusebeia takes a laid back opening approach to his Curvature debut. Clean, wandering breaks enter the mix and develop continually, as a subtly-used, luscious female vocal greets the listener with a curiously soothing vibe. Following the breakdown, a deep, pounding bassline punctuates skillful synthwork riddled with intrigue and atmosphere to round off a unique, eclectic track. A2 - In Perpetuum Stepping things up with a doggedly breakbeat focus, In Perpetuum is an energetic piece with an opening backdrop akin to an aging printer being coaxed back to life, before an echoed vocal welcomes hyperactive, rasping breaks, edited and chopped with the scintillating talent we have come to expect from Eusebeia. The latter half of the track changes up the vibe slightly with inquisitive padwork gliding above the omnipresent edits. B1 - Flow State Subtle cowbell-style cymbals and gentle melodies introduce Flow State, before an inimitable duality of old school atmospheric breaks pass the baton repeatedly through the track in typically impactful style from Eusebeia. The melodies and an understated bassline wrapped around kickdrums continues through the various phrases before the beats depart, leaving the listener to reflect on a truly captivating track - just as the title suggests. B2 - The Cure For What Ails You Reverberating percussion and classic whale sounds instantly grasp your attention before ominous 808 bass ushers in a thunderous helping of pure amen pleasure sent straight from the old school - edited and programmed to perfection by Eusebeia with a finesse seldom seen in modern production. A2 - Life On Earth A dream-like, reflective affair is up next with Life On Earth - Chronicle returning to the late 90’s vibe of the moniker with a plethora of classic FX, vocal samples and long constant synthwork cascading above. Utilising a simple but effective core melody, danceable two-step breaks and layers of detail that would fit in any retrospective set from the Progression Sessions era to the modern renaissance, this is one to savour. B1 - Future Fragments A real treat for fans of synthy, sci-fi tinged atmospheric goodness from eras gone by as Chronicle transports you to ‘99 Shepherds Bush Empire (you had to be there… now you can be) with a track that encapsulates the era perfectly. Drizzling the mix with frequent echoing effects and washes of spacey synths and pads over an earworm melody - not to mention the crisp rolling breaks) this is a versatile and enduring track you’ll keep going back to. B2 - Nostradamus Closing out the EP, we have Nostradamus which opens lightly with hi-hats and airy padwork before finely edited old school breakwork injects energy to the mix. The breaks build with additional elements creating a very danceable and rhythmic loop, punctuated by a catchy melody.
