Live and occasionally on records, his wife Shaunna Lekx is also part of the band as a vocalist and co-writer of lyrics. Rude 66 has been a longtime collaborator of the Bunker Records label, and has released influential records in both acid house and electro music styles of electronic music. The name Rude 66 is a reference to both the English pronunciation of Lekx's first name and year of birth. It is also a play on the famous American highway Route 66. After I did my first 5 albums for Bunker, I was approached by Koen Lybaert of Starfish Pool from Belgium. He had started his own label called Silver Recordings and asked several of the old Bunker artists to record an album on cd for his label. This was a pretty new concept for me: a cd? An actual sleeve? Tracks with titles? None of this I ever did before. So we had to come up with an idea, and I guess this variation on an actual newspaper headline was it. The tracks are a transition between my oldskool analogue bunker style acid stuff, and the introduction of some more breaks and sampled beat style tracks. As I have explained in some of the other texts from albums here, I was looking for a new sound after all the acid records and for me this was a new field to explore, though most tracks are still 100% analogue style jams. Koen selected the tracks and made a remix/edit of one, and the album was a cd only release. We did several gigs together, and I remember visiting him in Belgium for a weekend of jam sessions, I have no idea what happened to those. In the end, Silver, like so many labels, folded after a good number of releases. These files have all been recovered from the original DAT’s and remastered for your pleasure. released January 1, 1996

(1:21) 24Bit The Alienated Madman EP is one of several dark horses in my discography. The tracks were recorded in 1995 and 1996. Pretty much everybody I knew had their own label, so I decided to start one too. I used all my savings to have 300 copies pressed, only to find out when it came back from the plant that the distributor of all our labels like Bunker, Reference, Acid Planet, etc. didn't want to do techno and acid anymore. So here i was with 300 records i was sure would end up under my bed. Fortunately, i sold most through what was by then our only method of distribution left: the Hotmix Mail Order that I-f operated. The experience left me without the desire to ever operate a label again. A few years ago, i found 2 boxes in my storage with copies of the record, and these were sold out within a few days on the forum of what was then the CBS, and is now Intergalactic FM. Needless to say the record was never repressed or available in any other form than those initial 300 copies. The versions here are remastered, not to pump them up like mad but to actually give them some low end, which the cardboard-sounding vinyl sorely lacked. Having over 22 minutes of music on one side didn't help matters, but that's what Bunker did too. I had no idea about the relation between track lengths and sound on a record: hell, i didn't even know what a compressor was. So here is how that record was supposed to sound in the first place. Hell, it may be time for a repress!

In 1996 I was tired of acid, tired of techno, and for several years enjoyed the rough Jungle sound coming from the UK that you could hear on local Amsterdam radio. When I tried to make some tracks in this style, of course what came out was not this razor sharp UK sound or the mellower Bristol type of drum & bass, but what I at the time called sewer-jungle: basically my old overdriven analogue synths with lo-fi breaks cut up to the crazy max. I had no idea what to do with this material until I heard releases from new German labels like Position Chrome or Don Q which were very similar in sound to what I was doing. It turned out there was a scene for this industrial breaks mayhem. At the same time, through some mutual friends, I came in contact with 2 guys from Chicago’s Kultbox label who were releasing this kind of material, and were excited to work with my tracks. The release took a while in the end: the first pressing was not right, and I think there was an issue with the sleeves too. Meanwhile I played these tracks live with two crummy 8 and 12 bit samplers, an Atari, a scratch dj and a Korg MS-20. Almost no one did this stuff live, but we did manage to reach the grand finals of a National Dutch talent contest for electronic bands. Jury and crowd didn’t know what hit them when these tracks jackhammered into their brains: needless to say we didn’t win. By the time we played some shows in the US (Chicago/Detroit) invited by Kultbox, I had come to the conclusion that this music was fun to listen to, but a royal pain in the ass to make, staring at very small LCD-screens of samplers endlessly cutting up sampled breaks. No thanks. So exit breakbeats, and the US shows we played in summer 1998 or 1999 were actually some of our earliest electro live shows. Soon after, Kultbox quit, drum & bass followed jungle and went a very formulaic direction I totally did not like, ad I never looked back. Until now. The tracks, actually some of the meanest sounding shit I ever made, are of course remastered as the original pressing in the end was still pretty questionable. I even found one track that was intended for a follow-up release that of course never happened…so it’s included here as a bonus track.

Rude 66 - A Message from Heaven (6:05) At the time of the release of this EP, I was working for the CEM studio in Amsterdam. This place, a somewhat vague descendant of the famous Philips NatLab from the 1950’s with a somewhat shady history, had resided in several Dutch cities but set up shop here in 1995 to assist in building a Sonic Playground for children in a new concert building here in the city. Pleasant side benefit: these people had modulars. And just not any: there was a full size 3 cabinet Arp 2500, a 2600, a big Serge modular, and 3 EMS synths: a VCS3, a Synthi A and an AKS. The only problem was, that the original “serious composers” the studio aimed to assist and work for for the last 30 years, would rather edit and rework field recordings in a computer running Protools in those days, a movement called Soundscapes. While Soundscapes can be very interesting, I personally couldn’t bear to see the modulars standing sad and neglected in a corner while everybody sat there excitedly clicking their mouse. So me and fellow enthusiast Jouke Schouwstra from the studio drew up a plan: we would start a record label, invite the young and gifted dance music producers of the day who would appreciate the modulars for what they were, into the studio, and release the outcome on vinyl. In Clone we found a willing and cooperative distributor, and for the CEM, an organization that solely ran on subsidies and grants, the concept of actually earning some money from a product was a new concept. We had 10 releases on the label, called Vynalogica, in total, some sold very well and others not al all but it was always the concept that mattered. Of course I wanted to do a release myself: I literally had the keys to the place and it was an actual 5 minute walk from my house. So after a short time and some late night and weekend sessions, I was very familiar with the modulars. For the EP I dragged in my own 808 and Drumtraks drum machines, because something worldly as “beats” was not in the studio’s arsenal. The result are 2 melodic electro/Italo-wave tracks in which I won the battle to turn these ancient modular synths into something melodic, and 2 more experimental tracks where that battle was hopelessly lost and the machines quite literally took over. These machines put up a fight! To this day I have a fascination for modulars, but at the same time I learned there that there was a reason pre-patched synths were invented: they are a lot easier to program! in the end this EP was the last one on the label: the government pulled the plug on the annual subsidy grant the studio got, and the whole thing moved to Rotterdam where it resided for a few years at WORM, and now most of the synths are in the city of Den Bosch, being restored. I would have loved to add some more modular jams I did in those days, but those tapes must be in another box in my storage, because I haven’t found them yet! released January 1, 2006

Rude 66 - The Anvil (6:20) This EP was originally recorded for Dutch label Enfant Terrible's Gooiland Electro sublabel in 2014. For many years ET has been one of my favorite labels and when the question came if I would be interested in an EP, I did not hesitate. The track with Beta Evers was something that was on top of my musical want list for a long time. I’m not generally an artist that likes to collaborate with everybody and their brother, but I always felt that with Beta, we’d have a combo that would work well. Unfortunately we never actually met in person for this track, but in this digital day and age luckily you don’t actually have to. I sent her some raw material, she picked something she thought she could work with, and then the tracks and parts kept going back and forth until we were both satisfied. As I recall, the track with Sololust on vocals originally started as a remix idea but very quickly it because a Rude 66 track with Sololust’s vocals in it. It’s a subtle difference, but it’s there and everybody agreed. The 2 instrumental tracks both have an 80’s/ cold war theme, to complement the vocal tracks that are also in a bit 80’s wave style. Of the two, Mutual Assured Destruction is still part of our live set to this day. The vinyl release had a very limited amount of copies on translucent green vinyl, the rest were black. If you are lucky, these are also still for sale here (I found a few extra copies) because the release itself is long deleted and will never be repressed. This digital release has two additional bonus tracks: an instrumental demo version of Under Cover of the Night and The Anvil, the sister track to Under Cover. This one was eventually released on Telex Magick, a compilation album by Marguerita Records from Utrecht, Netherlands. released May 1, 2014

With a legacy that reaches back to the early 90s and the rough and ready Dutch electro sound of Bunker Records and The Hague, he’s maintained a distinctly non-conformist approach that touches on acid, Italo, techno and more besides, all finished with the punky attitude that sets him and peers like Unit Moebius and I-F apart. The tracks gathered together on The Witch Trials EP come from throughout Lekx’s career. As the artist himself says, “tracks from wildly different eras and sessions suddenly can combine to form one coherent EP. It’s almost like the A-side tracks were waiting for 20 years to be combined with the B-side tracks.” The overriding theme that binds together these timeless machine excursions is that of medieval witch trials – a global phenomenon that peaked in the 15-1600’s. Considering the suspicion, propaganda and mass moral panic involved in this strange curio of distant history, Lekx points to the parallels with the current age, “of political polarization and fake news accusations flying all over.” The EP title is also a tribute to two records close to his heart: The Fall’s Live At The Witch Trials, and the one-off Witch Trials project by members of the Dead Kennedys, Adrian Borland and Christian Lunch. “Werewolves & Poisoners” and “The Crusade Against Idolatry” are both archive tracks from the 1994-5 period when Lekx made his first albums for Bunker Records. The first track’s charging arps, rugged kicks, nagging acid lines and discordant paranoia all speak to that trailblazing period, while “The Crusade…” revels in canny programming of interwoven synth lines feeding into an unhinged, psychedelic rampage that reflects the righteous fervour and spiritual confusion of the EP concept. “The Absence Of Diabolism” opens up the B-side with a different tone, having been produced in 2016 and demonstrating the deeper acid undulations Lekx has become known for in more recent years. Still delivered via the same trusted tools he was using in the 90s, the sound feels like an extension of the Rude 66 vision rather than a separate entity. “Envious Are All The People, Witches Watch At Every Gate,” a cut from the late 90s, closes the EP out in a spacious, snarling exploration of broken acid electro laden with cinematic sweeps of synthesizer and a constant sense of unresolved tension. Across these four tracks, Lekx displays the scope of his craft as Rude 66 while also proving that timeless music can make sense in any context, and that the threads of inspiration in an artist’s journey can be followed, explored and even resolved 20 years later, when you least expect it. That was the feeling I had around the time the tracks on this particular album were made, roughly 1995-1997. It was getting more and more difficult to have our records distributed: the later Bunker albums started out in pressings of around 100 copies. The label soon quit afterwards, though we didn’t know back then that it would be back with a vengeance a few years later. Distributors went bankrupt and the remaining ones only seemed interested in polished club house junk. In Holland, mellow house ruled the big clubs. The legendary Acid Planet parties in The Hague ground to a halt in an implosion of mind numbing hours-long sets of 180 bmp empty acid lines fuelled by every drug you can imagine, I-f closed the Hotmix shop and went even deeper underground. And remember, these were the days when the internet was still a plaything running on dial-up modems. Records were bought in shops and via mail-order, and no one seemed interested in ours: places like Clone and Rush Hour were still in the future. Personally, I was also sick and tired of acid and had no idea where to go next, so a time of musical exploration started. On one hand I tried revisiting my industrial past, going for much more experimental jams and sounds, and building on darker themes. On the other hand new styles like jungle and illbient were taking shape, and it was a challenge to incorporate some of that spirit in a few tracks as well. I had no idea if these tracks would ever see the light of day, so there was complete freedom and no conforming to any label, scene or audience. To this day all my tracks are based on jam sessions with analogue hardware and lots of handwork, and it was with the tracks on this release that I tried to explore the outer limits of that way of working. That workflow also had big limitations: if I turned the machines off, the track was essentially gone. So it was also all about capturing the moment, that magical section of time, usually in the middle of the night, when suddenly all this wack stuff you’ve been fighting with all evening, comes together. You also know that it’ll all fall apart again if you move a fader the wrong way, work any longer on a sound, or if anyone opens the door because old analogue machines are super sensitive to temperature variations. These tracks were my way of staying sane through a transitional period in the history of the West Coast sound and eventually, as is evident in these tracks as well, a new path towards electro, italo and wave became clear through the musical fog. I wasn’t the only one to find it, and the rest, as they say, is history. The tracks were indeed never released or even heard, and the tapes ended up in boxes in storage, only to be uncovered by accident this year. I hope that almost 20 years later, they still carry some relevance. I know they do for me. Rude 66 - He Who Shuffles The Cards, Controls The Deck (14:59) Album number 2 that the mighty Cliff Lothar has compiled from the huge pile of DAT tapes I presented to him has an even broader range than the first one when I look at the time when these tracks were recorded. The basics of some tracks go back to before I had released anything ever, and it goes all the way up to the early 2000’s for some electro tracks. If I had to classify this album as anything, I’d say the words “let’s try something different” apply here. I have never liked to pin myself down on one style, and have a tendency to go a completely different way if something works or is successful, rather than milking a formula like so many dj’s, producers and bands do. It was pointed out to me by several of these people that this style is also called “Commercial Suicide” but hey, at least it keeps things interesting. Of course the early Bunker albums were one big “let’s try something different” adventure. I’m sure if I had included demo tracks from when I still played in an industrial noise band, they would have made it on the LP’s too. Those first records were all about creative freedom. With some tracks on this particular release, it turned out to be a bit of a struggle to say something interesting about them for the very simple reason that I barely remember making them. There’s stuff on these tapes where I really had to wonder if they were actually my tracks, as they sounded almost new to me. Whether that says something about the conditions and substances they were made under, or my less than perfect memory skills of today, remains to be seen.. released May 26, 2016

Hardcore Rude 66 fans (and that’s all of you, right?) will know there was never an album by that title, and they are of course correct. What you see here is a clever piece of marketing because these are, in fact, two EP’s re-packaged into an album. The material fits together and marks an interesting transition stage between my acid output and the switch to electro. Many people believe that only happened when the new Bunker re-emerged in 1998, but in fact my second EP for Djax-Up was also an electro record. The first 4 tracks are from the Lucifer EP, which was my debut on Djax. I loved the artwork with Satan and the flames, though in fact Lucifer in this case was my cat and not the demon Saskia and Alan Oldham thought. The pressing was pretty appalling though, and thankfully these versions are all remastered so you can hear them how they should have sounded back in 1996. The second quartet is from the B-day EP, where the idea was tough, industrial-ish electro. These are also remasters and this time I can’t blame a pressing plant, label or distributor, vinyl supplier, the weather or oil company because the master tapes sound just as bad as the record itself. What was I thinking? Luckily it was nothing that couldn’t be fixed so here the tracks are in all their relative glory. Bonus track is a completely different unreleased version of No Cure. When this came out almost no one was interested in electro and to this day, many people only know Djax from the Chicago bangers and techno it released, but there was some very good electro too. The EP didn’t break sales records at the time and by the time it came out, a certain mr. Tevares called that he was starting up a new version of his label with mostly electro records, and would I be interested to join in? Sometimes the stars just align themselves in the right way. But I enjoyed my time on Djax, if for nothing more than being in the company of some truly great producers. released March 30, 2017
