Darkroom / Discography (Web)
Жанр: Ambient, Drone, Experimental, Post Rock Страна-производитель диска: UK Год издания диска: 1999-2020 Тип издания: WEB Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac) Тип рипа: tracks Продолжительность: 20:54:33 Источник (релизер): bandcamp Наличие сканов в содержимом раздачи: cover Darkroom are Michael Bearpark: guitars, pedals, loops and feedback Andrew Ostler: synthesizers, laptop, processing, woodwind & reeds Darkroom are a UK-based duo, originally formed to provide a live film festival soundtrack on which their debut album ‘Daylight’ (released on the 3rd Stone label in 1998) was based. Guitar but not guitar; synthesizers but not keyboards – Darkroom’s music starts with improvisation and a distinctive approach to sound design, followed by disciplined editing and stop-motion studio craft. By turns beautiful and beautifully ugly, theirs is a very human music that always sounds ‘played’ not ‘programmed’, despite the technology that's essential for producing it. Darkroom's 2013 double album Gravity’s Dirty Work showcases their extended composition through performance and post-production approach. Beginning with the snarling lines and motorik percussion of Strung With Black Nylon, it builds through the heavenly radiance of Karhupuisto / Beautiful Retreat towards the lost-summer reveries and scandi-jazz melancholia of A Pair A Part. 2015's extended The Rest Is Noise is distilled from multiple performances captured at the Tuesdays Post nights ('Live Progressive Ambient') the duo co-host, alternating between serene ambience and noise furnace. Rather than showcasing their influences, Darkroom tease out the DNA of any music that inspires them, before exploring wherever it and their own ideas and experiences take them. Darkroom's previous live performances include Santa Cruz (Y2K15 festival headliners), Zürich, Antwerp, Köln, Glastonbury, Cambridge, and many nights in London. They've contributed to film and BBC television soundtracks, and been remixed by Silver Apples, Bass Communion and others. New collaborators include Hubbub, a multidisciplinary research team exploring the science of noise. Darkroom's music in progress is often made available to stream via SoundCloud, with finished released available through Burning Shed, Bandcamp, and elsewhere. Michael is also guitarist for No-Man, Tim Bowness, Henry Fool and Pedaltone, among others, appearing both live and on studio recordings. He's also a Professor of Computational Chemistry. Andrew runs music software and hardware company Expert Sleepers, specialising in the integration of computers and analogue, particularly modular, synths. Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Mike and Os of Darkroom played for over 3 hours and recorded most of that. "For this project, the mixers were given about an hour selected from those recordings. The original brief for the new album was, 'guitar under microscope'. In places, it's the hardest hitting Darkroom album to date, but without doubt it's also the most accessible, combining 70's space rock, 80's Sheffield electronica, 60's guitar instrumentals and contemporary post rock. Mixing classic synthesizer & guitar tones with inventive post-production, the album combines improvisation with carefully crafted and layered arrangements to reward repeated listenings. From Santana & Tangerine Dream to Cocteau Twins & Tortoise, file under ambient stadium rock. The album was mastered by award-winning engineer Jon Astley (The Who, Led Zeppelin) and features a typically evocative Carl Glover sleeve. released October 3, 2008 Darkroom are Michael Bearpark - electric guitars, pedals, loops and feedback, acoustic guitar, bass Andrew Ostler - synthesizers, programming with Andrew Booker - drums Recorded and mixed by Os between August 2007 and July 2008 In Royston, Letchworth and London UK Produced by Darkroom Mastered by Jon Astley at Close To The Edge Practise safe sound, but turn it up Any crackling noises are correct Concorde photograph from Carl Glover archives Portrait photography by Andrew Ostler Design by Aleph ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

At times sepulchral and brooding, at others transcendent and uplifting, it ends in lost-summer reveries and echoey melancholia." - Sid Smith The Darkroom duo of Michael Bearpark (No-Man, Henry Fool) and Andrew Ostler (Expert Sleepers) return with their first double album. Begun as an exploration of early 90's electronica and its many sources, the album developed from extended improvisations through meticulous editing, layering and post-production into a coherent and timeless suite. The trademark blurring of guitars, synthesiser and found sounds moves from the heavenly Beck meets Talk Talk atmospherics of Karhupuisto / Beautiful Retreat through apocalyptic foot-on-monitor fuzz mayhem at the end of the title track before closing with the eloquent scandinavian jazz-electronica fusion of A Pair A Part. Also featuring Andrew Booker (No-Man, Henry Fool, Sanguine Hum) on percussion and Simon H. Fell (Keith Tippett, Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill) on double bass, the album is mastered for all formats by Jon Astley (The Who, George Harrison, Tori Amos). Artwork by the inimitable Carl Glover. Darkroom - Kintsukuroi (33:26) 24Bit Darkroom’s new album The Noise Is Unrest - over 3 hours and 20 minutes of fractured ambiences and expansive sonic abstractions - is released to coincide with their performance at the Extreme Chill festival in Iceland in September 2019. An album collects music that belongs together and which develops a narrative. The nine pieces included here do both: it’s just that they're mostly 20 minutes long or more; each having their own stories that develop inside. As with 2015’s predecessor album The Rest Is Noise, much of the music presented here was recorded as part of the Tuesdays Post concert series that Darkroom co-organised with singer / composer Georgina Brett between 2013 and 2016. The Noise Is Unrest is based on the later pieces, in the order they were originally recorded, following a post-production process of subtracting and shaping without adding anything more, for repeated later listening. Throughout The Noise Is Unrest, sounds evolve and reappear across the different pieces as characters with a life of their own. There’s cathedral-like echoey beauty, unsettling volcanic noise, slow transformations and dramatic contrasts; all fitting for the Iceland launch location chosen, though this couldn’t have been guessed when these recordings were originally made. The Noise Is Unrest is an album about not settling and moving ever onward. During the drive back from the last concert documented here, it became clear that this part of a musical journey was coming to an end. Much more was to follow: festival performances (including Y2K15 in Santa Cruz, released as We See The Same Stars Differently); collaboration with the Wellcome Trust (released as The Axe Forgets But The Tree Remembers); unexpectedly special connections, studio moves, illnesses, and more… stories that now frame this work, the first full Darkroom album release since 2016. Intended to be timeless, The Noise Is Unrest was nevertheless created in a very specific time and place. Who’s going to listen to an album that’s more than 3 hours long? This is the time it takes to fly from London to Istanbul. Darkroom - The Uncut Stones Of Night (23:25) 24Bit Home Diaries was an invitation by the Whitelabrecs label to artists and musicians to create an album or EP to document their personal experience during the lockdown or social distancing conditions in 2020, due to the coronavirus outbreak. This, the penultimate Home Diaries edition, is the first and only collaboration released as part of the series. UK duo Darkroom - Andrew Ostler and Michael Bearpark - are renowned for their extended live performances: rarer following Andrew’s move to Scotland; now even more challenging with the pandemic and resulting lockdown. Seeking and finding positives throughout this time, Andrew has been performing as part of streaming event series. Mike was present on these occasions from a distance via guitar recordings transferred to cassette: one from a Darkroom performance in Edinburgh towards the end of 2019, and another, inspired by Scotland, that seeded the recording of their full Whitelabrecs album planned for November 2020. The two pieces presented here evolve through multiple shades of colour and dynamics, retaining an open live feel; 'Arrokoth' and 'The Uncut Stones of Night' are very much of their time, yet combine to make a timeless album experience, with a total running time of 40 minutes. * Arrokoth Original recording for Fuzz Bat Live Stream - 31st March 2020 www.youtube.com/watch?v=poqOMDOs668 Guitar: recorded at The Darkroom, 2nd February 2019 * The Uncut Stones Of Night Original recording for More Kicks Than Friends - 29th April 2020 www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sqz1poa1uE Guitar: recorded at Henry’s Cellar Bar, Edinburgh, 13th November 2019 released June 26, 2020 Recorded by Andrew Ostler Edited, mixed, and produced by Darkroom Mastered by James Edward Armstrong Andrew Ostler - bass clarinet, modular synth, laptop Michael Bearpark - guitar, field recordings Originally released on Whitelabrecs: whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/album/home-diaries-029 Special thanks: Harry Towell (Whitelabrecs), Stuart Fraser (Fuzz Bat), Ned Rush (More Kicks), Elif Yalvaç, New Horizons, Roy Fuller. Rather than have these tracks languishing, unheard, on the Darkroom hard drive, the band decided to put these out as a free download and a subtle advertisement for the original 'The DAC Mixes' album itself (which featured mixes and contributions from Bass Communion, Tim Bowness, Theo Travis, Peter Chilvers and Centrozoon, amongst others). Darkroom - Alien Grace (18:33) A free introduction to the band, Selsey Reflections features the single Ahead Finitely taken from the new album Gravity's Dirty Work, together with exclusive and archive tracks: the odd time signature sequences of Selsey Reflections; the intense live performance of Light Sleeper; and the first track recorded by the project that became Darkroom, the 18-minute dub collage Alien Grace, restored and remastered for 2013. 'Gravity's Dirty Work' can be pre-ordered now here on Bandcamp. * ahead finitely Part of the 2013 album Gravity’s Dirty Work. darkroomtheband.bandcamp.com/album/gravitys-dirty-work Like Oxygene IV re-imagined by Bill Laswell, Ahead Finitely sees the trademark Darkroom mix of atmospheric loops and abrasive guitars placed alongside vintage analogue synthesiser pulses. Ahead Finitely, the accompanying short film by Richard Smith (director of No-Man's Mixtaped and Returning) and Andrew Swann, can be seen at www.vimeo.com/16620132 A 'making of' video, including interviews with the band, can be seen at www.vimeo.com/16760728 * selsey reflections Selsey Mirrors was Darkroom's contribution to the Loopers’ Delight 12.12.12 project, coordinated by Georgina Brett and Kavstik Kurva livelooping.bandcamp.com/album/loopers-delight-12-12-12-project Edited and remixed in 2013 to become Selsey Reflections. Based on sequencer patterns formed from divisors of 12 (6, 4, 3, 2) in order, generating a 15/8 feel that drifts in and out of phase at 144 bpm. Other goals for the piece originally were that it should be 12 minutes long, and incorporate a 12 string electric guitar played through 12 pedals. To bring it all back down to earth, we then shredded the modular synth through a vintage germanium fuzz. Selsey Mirrors: remembering the Astronomer. * light sleeper Recorded live in September 2012. From the rehearsals for Darkroom’s London 2012 mini-tour, with minimal editing. Solo guitar, modular synthesiser and laptop. The first and so far only time Mike’s guitar pedals were MIDI-synced. A disco danse macabre. * alien grace Recorded to tape and mixed live in 1996 for the Nevers Film Festival, as backing for a live soundtrack performance to accompany a screening of the Roswell Alien Autopsy. Darkroom - Trident Mountain Sky (15:06) 24Bit Trident Mountain Sky is a three guitar piece recorded during the early (Feb 2009) sessions for Darkroom’s Gravity’s Dirty Work album (2013). The three guitars (including an electric 12-string) were recorded in succession, processed live through the about-to-be-released Oomingmak plug-in (Expert Sleepers), which generates additional synthesizer and ring modulator tones from each guitar part. A modular synthesizer bass part was added late 2013, largely based on analogue delay feedback. www.flickr.com/photos/darkroomtheband/11971349326/ released January 15, 2014 Michael Bearpark: guitars Andrew Ostler: software development, modular synthesizer Recorded by Andrew Ostler Mixed, produced and mastered by Darkroom Photo credit: Dave Kleinschmidt foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)
