The main focus of his work is within the experimental electronic music field. He launched the record label Expanding Records as an outlet for his debut album Electro-orgoustic Music in 1995. The label, which focuses on instrumental electronic music, continued to grow to include a roster of approximately 20 artists from around the world. He also runs a music studio called Memetune Studios which houses a large collection of vintage electronic synthesisers and other recording equipment. In 2008, Benge released his tenth studio album Twenty Systems, a concept album which featured twenty tracks made on twenty different synthesisers between the years 1968 and 1988 and an accompanying book describing the instruments and the development of the synthesiser in general. The album was called 'a brilliant contribution to the archaeology of electronic music' by Brian Eno. Since 2012, Benge has released a regular series of online solo albums via his bandcamp and iTunes pages. These albums regularly feature his "one-synthesiser-per-album" concept, whereby he limits himself to creating a full album using a single electronic music system, thereby developing the idea he introduced with Twenty Systems in 2008 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Donald Buchla began makng electronic musical instruments in 1963, developing the first Buchla 100 series systems in conjunction with the San Francisco Tape Music Center. These first inventions coincided with the development of Robert Moog's 900 Series modular systems over on the west coast of america, and as such belong to the very first generation of commercially available synthesisers. One intersting aspect is that Don Buchla is still developing and manufacturing his modular systems, using the same module format (now 200e series) that he introduced 50 years ago. The current 200e modules utilise a combination of analogue and digital components The Buchla has a very unique way of producing sound, using electronic voltages to control the sound sources (oscillators and noise generators), sound modifiers (gates, filters, phase shifters, modulators, etc) and event timing generators (sequencers, random sources, pulse generators, etc). Systems can be built up from the available modules to suit the needs of the composer. The power of the system lies in the inter-modulation capabilities. This means that extremely deep patches can be set up with a myriad of connections interacting together in complex ways to produce evolving and self-generating soundscapes. It is anagolous to working with a living organism as opposed to a static machine, a brain rather than a computer The pieces presented here were recorded to tape using overdubbing in places. Additional reverberation and delay lines were also incorporated into the system. Review: Norman Records: Chemical Tapes really put the effort into making their releases look dead professional, and not only that but this little Benge tape here has a track-by-track talk through by the artist himself and a little introduction he's written about what he likes about cassette tapes. There's four tracks of modular synth looping on here, each originating from a different machine. Opener 'Untitled (Putney)', made with a Putney Synthi passing through an EHX looping unit, has swells of bassy drone over which trebly chirrups gradually gather, with increasingly ominous and panicky effect until it's shivery washes of treble rumble, which then morphs into whooshes and croaks. On the second track 'Untitled (Moog)' it's a Moog model 3C's turn to take centre stage, running through various echo and reverb units to make a throbbing mid drone with minimal flourishes in the top and bottom. Calming, pensive meditations both. On the flip things start getting a bit more complex, and if it wasn't for the unobtrusive nature of the tones this could be a bit hard work. It sounds like a soft drone with a bit of crackle and interference but it is in fact a Serge Modular system fed through a DBX stereo compression unit and then layered onto itself using the EHX mentioned earlier, which also pops up in the final exploration 'Untitled (Paia)', which utilises a 1974 Paia 4700 modular system. I'll leave what that one sounds like to your imagination. The five compositions featured on Harmuna were similarly realised on the Buchla modular synthesiser. For more information on the specific system and modules used please refer to the notes accompanying Abstraxa which can be found here: zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album/abstraxa If Abstraxa was an exploration of the distant reaches of the sound universe, Harmuna is a journey in the opposite direction, inverting the mind’s eye and exploring the infinite space within The Synthesiser was set up in such a way that harmonious tone-waves were layered upon themselves and rhythmic patterns built up to form the various pieces. The resulting tone poems can be experienced in various ways, for example as meditative deep-listening (i.e. with headphones) or in the background to serve as an ambient aural setting released May 5, 2012 Recorded at Benge Studios, London, April 2012 All Music and Design by Benge (c)2012 Ben Edwards (Benge) Cover picture adapted from Cyclotron Scan of a human brain, 1976 EMI Medical foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

The various instruments were set up in such a way as to be considered one large interactive system and the individual pieces were thereby 'grown' or allowed to form naturally The system comprised the following elements: Analog sound sources including oscillators and white noise generators; voltage controllers and processors including step sequencers, clock dividers, and potentiometers; audio processors including amplifiers, reverberation units, tape delay and keyed analog compression The various triggers and gates were used to set off reactions that, for example, would send an audio signal to a reverberation unit being modulated by a separate but rhythmically connected pulse which would in turn be fed into an analog compressor being modulated by a different pulse thereby creating multi-layered rhythms and polyrhythms. The idea was to set up as complex a patch as possible whilst maintaining the simple ryhthmic identity of the pieces Equipment used: Buchla 100 / 200e hybrid modular synthesiser EMS VCS3 modular synthesiser Roland R880 Digital Reverberator MXR 01 Digital Reverb Watkins Copycat valve echo Tascam 112R casette recorder MXR Dual Limiter Alesis 3060 compressor DBX 119 compressor Avalon VT747 Compressor / EQ Langavin passive EQ Yamha RM16 console released December 27, 2012 All Music and Design by Benge (c)2012 Ben Edwards (Benge) foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Benge - Chime Five (11:24) In December 2012 I was visiting a friend in Vancouver, BC and he showed me his working example of the legendary Buchla 700 analog / digital hybrid synthesiser. This highly advanced synthesiser was developed and produced in the mid 1980s by Californian electronic instrument pioneer Don Buchla, using proprietory hardware and software components. Only six of these machines were ever produced, and this is possibly the only working example left in existance. My friend showed me some of its sound producing capabilities and then left me to explore for myself. Presented here are the results of the hour or so that I had alone with this machine Donald Buchla began makng electronic musical instruments in 1964 with his 100 series modules, which introduced the concept of analog voltage control to musical instruments. He then produced the 200 series modules in the early 1970s and continued developing systems and modules of greater complexity utilising digital control and eventually microprocessor control, culminating in the 700 system in the mid 1980s. More recently Buchla introduced the 200e modules which he continues to develop The five compositions were recorded directly to computer using overdubbing in places. No additional processing was applied. No additional processors were used in this recording. It should be noted that the Buchla 100 features its own sequencer module and this was used to produce the repeating rhythms in the music on this record and also the melodic and harmonic content. On the first track the voltage controlled touch plates (model 112) were used to produce some of the more performance-orientated sounds on the record. On most tracks the patches were set up and left to run by themselves, with minor human intervention other than adjusting the various potentiometers. The Buchla 100 system is very adept at producing self-perpetuating sounds and it is this aspect of it that is explored here released September 4, 2013 All music by Benge (B.D.Edwards). So for this reason I decided to create these tracks with this idea in mind, resulting hopefully in a sound reminiscent of the musical cues found on certain late 1970s soundtrack or library albums. Therefore when listening to this record it would not be inappropriate to try and imagine yourself immersed in a progressive Television Play such as would have been broadcast on on a sunday evening in 1978 This record was made using the EMS Polysynthi electronic polyphonic synthesiser. All sounds were created and played on this single machine, and then recorded directly to multi-track tape in overlaying passes. The only exception to this was the minor addition of monophonic spring reverberation via the EMS VCS3 and some occasional band-pass filtering courtesy of the EMS 8-octave filter bank released December 16, 2013 Music created on the EMS Polysynthi Recorded at Memetune Studios, London, UK © December 2013 Benge / Expanding Records ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Benge - Lineform (5:09) A series of albums recorded on a single electronic music synthesiser (or group of related instruments incorporated into a system) utilising a method of composing and recording called Looping Looping is achieved using a technique whereby sounds are recorded either digitally or to tape which is set to loop around upon itself at various fixed lengths of time, ranging from a few seconds up to several minutes depending on the compositional effect required for each individual piece of music There are many variables within this framework which determine the nature of the composition such as: LOOP DURATION; NUMBER OF CHANNELS; STEREO POSITIONING; LOOP FEEDBACK, etc. Thus, the ‘rules’ of each musical piece can be set up in advance allowing the composition to flow naturally from any given starting point On this first record the sound source is a Buchla 100 modular analog synthesiser dating from the 1960s. This instrument in itself allows for extremely complex multi-dimentional events to be set up, including elements relating to pitch, timbre, time, duration, rhythm, harmony, reverberation, stereo location and the like. This instrument uses a unique method of sound production called vector synthesis, developed by Dave Smith and his team in California in the mid 1980s. In simple terms sounds are created using four digital oscillators with unique waveforms which form the points on a vector which can be manipulated dynamically either automatically or by hand using a joystick or keyboard. The result is a very rich and evolving sound which combine digital and analog processing (filtering and amplitude). On this album the sounds from the Prophet VS were then recorded in real-time on the Electro Harmonix multi-track looper, a device which enables multiple takes to be layered upon themselves thus forming the compositional aspect of the pieces of music presented here released October 23, 2014 Recorded at Memetune Studios, England All music and design copyright © Benge (Ben Edwards) 2014 ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Benge - Envelope Two (19:01) 24Bit With this release Benge continues his series of albums composed and recorded on a single synthesiser system The unit utilised here is a Serge Modular system composed of modules made in the early 1970s, the first generation "paper-face" editions. These were so named due to their distinctive livery, printed onto paper sheets that were then applied to the modules. These early devices are unique in their use of graphic symbols rather than written descriptions of the module's functions. Thus they have a somewhat oblique appearance and require an unusually steep learning curve to discover the system's many hidden functions One pioneering feature of the early Serge systems is the emphasis on multifunction modules, whereby one module has the ability to be used in various ways depending upon the method of patching. For example the Dual Universal Slope Generator can, with the use of a few patch cables, be set up to act as a VCO, an LFO, an envelope generator, a simple low pass filter, a VC slew, a trigger divider, a trigger source and more. Several other modules have equally versatile functions and for this reason the system has much scope for elaborate experimentation A second feature of the Serge that distinguishes it from other systems is the method of the patching itself; no distinction is made between audio and control signals and they both share the same type of sockets at their input and output. As the cables are able to be stacked one upon another, each output can feed multiple inputs and vice versa. The overall effect of this complex approach to patching is that it always yields unique results. Although laborious to set up, a large patch will inevitably be one-off in nature and therefore will produce a very individual sound. It also provides a unique way for the user to interact with that sound The range of modules contained in the system used here can be configured as follows: 18 VCOs, 6 multimode filters, 18 envelope generators, multiple noise and random sources, 14 VCAs, 8 mixers, 4 phase shifters, two 8x3 sequencers, complex delay and stereo reverb units. There are also many voltage processors and logic modules On this record Benge set up elaborate sound generation and manipulation patches and then multi-tracked several passes of audio to create two highly abstract long-form pieces released May 5, 2017 All music and artwork © 2017 Benge (Ben Edwards) All rights reserved Published by Meme Songs, 2017 Recorded at Memetune Studios, England foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

On the one hand (the Lagrangian specification) the listener may allow themselves to be carried along with the music, as a leaf might be carried along when landing upon a stream of water. On the other hand (the Eulerian specification), it is also possible to perceive the flowing music as a rock might experience the stream, allowing the water to move around it in a continuously changing and immersive flow The following instruments were used on this album: Moog 3C, Emu and Polyfusion Modular synthesisers, Moog 12 Stage Phaser, Korg DSS sampler (used to sample sustained tones from the Moog 3C), Roland Space Echo 201, Bel BD80S delay unit, EMT 140 reverb, Dual Moog 900 and EML 400 analog sequencers, Emu Digital Memory Sequencer released March 14, 2018 Written, recorded and designed by Benge at Memetune Studios, England All music and imagery © Memesongs 2018 foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

In this case he used a self contained modular synthesizer created by the Canadian manufacturer Modcan. The system contains various modules made by Modcan and Cyndustries in what is known as the Modcan-A Format. These modules were made between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s and all share the same basic dimensions, voltage requirements and patching format. The Modcan philosophy is one of high quality, precision circuitry combined with the flexibility gained from banana cable patching, which allows for extremely complex sound contruction and sequencing The system used here has approximately 10 VCOs of varying kinds, including analogue, FM and digital waveforms, 10 filters of various types, 2 samplers, 3 sequencers, 10 VCAs and 10 envelopes, noise and random generators, 4 mixers, clocking and trigger generators and processors, 4 VC delay units, phasers, frequency shifters, wave shapers, and many more unique logic-function modules, such as dividers, Boolian logic, flip-flops, comparators, and the like. The Modcan-A also allows for outboard effects units to be patched into the system, and on this recording a Boss SE-70 Multi-FX, produced in 1995, was integrated into various parts of the signal chain during the composition process released March 5, 2019 This album was realised on the Modcan-A series Modular synthesiser All music and imagery by Benge Made at Memetune Studios, England ©+(p) Memetune Recordings (Memesongs) 2019 All rights reserved foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Casting himself out into to a world of crudely designed studio sets depicting faraway civilisations, ancient but highly advanced alien species who all happen to speak english, adrift in a universe of primative electronic bleeps and buzzes, he sets the musical scene for this never-to-be-seen space soap opera. The sound of vibration surrounds us, filling the universe with its inharmonious wash. Yet the chaos, which these vibrations so ruthlessly comprise, can on occasion be tamed. If the conditions permit, the vibrations might be formed into those most discrete of aural collisions we call SONICAL NOTES. Varied and strange are the notes. They drift as if motes in the air. Some, but very few, will drift upon the ears of Man, and become interpreted into the music of dance, or song, or any other therapeutic amalgamation. Fewer notes still will drift athwart, beyond the reach of human perception, to finally become recompiled by that unseen and almost always unheard compiler of the wordless song, the TRANSFORMATION MACHINE Benge (Benjamin D Edwards), a prominent name in todays experimental electronic music scene, has given his fertile imagination full rein in this sonic exploration of galactic intrigue, demonstrating an enthralling command of electronic modular synthesiser systems THIS ALBUM WAS CREATED ON E.M.S. VCS3 AND POLYSYNTHI SYNTHESISERS, AND IS PART NINE OF BENGE’S FORMS SERIES OF WORKS Author's Note: As with many of my recent solo albums, I sometimes like to set myself certain limitations whilst composing and recording music. Together they provided a way of generating note and timing events, using stochastic methods to initiate the note sequences, and then a process of pitch and timing quantisation carried out within Performer I used up to eight midi channels to trigger the various modules on the Yamaha TX816, which is a rack unit containing eight TS1 modules, each one containing a DX7 six-operator FM synthesiser Each TS1 is capable of generating 16 note polyphony, thus the TX816 can generate a total of 128 notes and 8 multitambral sounds at any one time. The previous album used overdubbing techniques to layer the sound of each synthesiser upon itself to build up the tracks, but on this album Benge took the decision to play each piece in real time, without overdubs or edits, creating each piece as a live performance. This meant setting up each instrument in advance and either letting it play along by itself, or interacting with it as the pieces developed in various ways. Each performance was filmed and there is an accompanying 60 minute video that goes with the album released June 5, 2020 Written and Performed by Benge at Memetune Studios, England Designed by Benge Published by MemeSongs © Expanding Recordings 2020, All rights reserved Originally created for the MODULISME radio show first broadcast in February 2020 Special thanks to: Philippe Petit / Modulisme (modulisme.info) Steve Malins (@randommanagement) foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Benge - Inharmonic Preset (6:19) 24Bit Download includes 12 page PDF booklet This year marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the ARP 2500 Introduced in 1970, the 2500 was Alan R Pearlman’s first commercial product, being sold under his company’s name Tonus Inc. Alan had come from an engineering background, having worked as a designer for a company providing equipment for NASA, which was used on the Gemini and Apollo space programmes. Indeed, some of the circuitry and hardware that was sent into space was actually used in the 2500 synthesiser, giving an indication of the quality and precision of the instrument he was responsible for creating The team that developed the 2500 must have put much time and thought into the development of the system before it was finally put into production. Contemporaneous equipment consisted only of modular systems, and therefore the concept of the pre-wired keyboard synthesiser had not yet been formed, and the only instruments (other than electric organs) that were available were fully or semi-modular in nature With the 2500 the decision was made to do away with the patch-cord method of interconnecting the various signals and control voltages, replacing them with a series of matrix-switches to make the connections. There are several advantages with this design philosophy, but there are also a few disadvantages which I will describe later. The biggest advantage I can see is that it makes patching the system very neat and tidy, there being no cables to work around when building sounds. On a conventionally patched system, the amount of cables can build up very quickly to become a mass of tangled wires, which can obscure the control surface and legending on the synthesiser, making it hard to see what is going on. On the 2500 the controls are always kept clear Another advantage with the matrix-patching system is that you can set one output to go to any number of inputs by aligning the sliders horizontally. On a patch-cord system this would mean taking the one output and using a multiple module to obtain more that one output. On the 2500 you are free to experiment with these kind of connections very easily, leading to many happy accidents However, I find that there is a slight disconnect that happens when working with the 2500, as it is not quite as easy to see what connections are currently in use or where control or audio signals are coming from and going to. It takes a different mental approach while working with it, which can be both a good and bad thing The overriding feeling that you get when working with the ARP2500 is that the sheer quality and power of the raw oscillators and filters, combined with the overall flexibility of the patching system, provides for a unique and hugely satisfying experience. There are a tremendous range of functions at hand, providing a level of complexity that can easily produce sounds and sequences unavailable on other systems There is one module in this system that is totally unique in the synthesiser world, even now I believe. That is the 1050 Mix Sequencer. It can be used as a conventional mixer if required, but it also has the ability to have its 8 channels stepped through by an external clock. So for example you could send it 8 different sounds and then set up a loop that cycles through them at any arbitrary rate. It really is a very interesting module, especially suited to creating percussion sequences or unusual looping sections in compositions Another unique feature is that the regular sequencer has 10 stages. This is a particularly unusual meter to find in most musical forms, but as you can select the reset point to be any stage from 1 to 10, either conventional or complex and unusual patterns can be created very easily. The aforementioned mix-sequencer can mix control voltages as well as audio signals, so you can set up repeating sequences of up to 30 stages using the 3 outputs of the regular sequencer, each going to a channel of the mix-sequencer which is being cycled round, acting as a sequential switch There is provision on the 2500 for dual balanced, or ring, modulation, as well as a dual sample and hold module. These provide another source of complexity within the system, and allow for some very exotic patches There is a lot of depth to explore within the system, and combined with the high level of sound quality, uniqueness of the patching system, the flexibility of the design, the ARP 2500 is deserving of its reputation as one of the best modular synthesisers ever produced When it came to the production of this album, I decided to use a trick that I utilised on my previous album (Devils Leap) whereby I made use of a vintage stereo sampler to aid the composition process. The system I used to do this was the Roland S760. This choice was determined because of the ability to record long stereo sounds (of several minutes if necessary) generated on the 2500, and then replay them polyphonically on the S760, using my digital audio recorder and MIDI sequencer to also aid in the composition process Other sections of the tracks were built up by syncing the 2500 from an external clock derived from the Digital Performer Sequencer. Thus I was able to build up multi-tracked passages and sections which I further arranged and edited in the DP Sequencer So on this album, every sound you are hearing was created on the ARP2500, and the Sampler was used as a composition and recording aid, giving the usually monophonic 2500 the ability to be played polyphonically. In addition, I used a stereo Plate Reverb unit (the EMT 140) and a mono delay unit (the Bel BD-80S) to add space and time-based effects to the recordings Benge, Memetune Studios, 2020 released December 4, 2020 Written and recorded by Benge Design and photography, Benge Made at Memetune Studios, UK ©+(p) 2020 Meme Songs, all rights reserved Thanks to: Steve Malins @ Random Management An Expanding Records release foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

But that is not to say that those same books cannot be made into film soundtracks, especially if the book itself never existed in the first place. Well that is the proposition that I set out to create with this trilogy of albums, or unmade film soundtracks, starting here with Zerotheque Tome I In order to put myself in the correct frame of mind, I selected a limited group of instruments for each album in the series. This first soundtrack was inspired by the science fiction and horror films of the 1970s and 80s, and thus features a suitable gathering of vintage instruments from the period, namely: Moog Modular 3C, Rhodes Chroma, Oberheim Four Voice,Yamaha CS80, Sequential Six Trak, DK Synergy, Ensoniq ESQ-1, Emu Emulator-2, Linn LM-1, Sequential Drumtraks The remaining albums will each feature a different set of instruments so as to give a unique sonic character to the soundtrack. Zerotheque Tome II will use Japanese synthesisers and drum machines from the 1980s, followed by a selection of British vintage electronic instruments from the 1970s for Tome III released February 21, 2021 Written and recorded by Benge at Memetune Studios, England An Expanding Records production © + (p) 2021 Memesongs All rights reserved foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Ben Edwards & Douglas Benford Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

John Foxx And The Maths - Howl (5:21) John Foxx And The Maths return with a new line-up on their 5th studio album, Howl which will be released on 15 May 2020. Former Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon joins Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards) and Hannah Peel after previously guesting with The Maths at their debut Roundhouse show in 2010. ‘For years, I'd wanted to work with Robin Simon again,’ says Foxx. ‘There’s something central about what he does - and I always miss it, no matter who I work with. It’s what Rob can do with a song, and with the sheer power of sound.’ Work on the album began back in April 2019 at Benge’s Memetune studios in Cornwall with Rob Simon involved right from the start, his contributions instantly mutating the original ideas into something new. ‘Give him a song and he’ll give you three takes - all utterly different incarnations,’ enthuses Foxx who first worked with Simon on Ultravox’s Systems Of Romance album in 1978. ‘And it will all be much better. Demolition intercision is what he does and when you get used to the violence he can wreak, it’s a true delight.’ The singer cites the title-track and first single Howl (now available from the Official John Foxx store) as a vivid example: ‘Rob just walked in, did one take and left us all standing on the chairs. So I had to write another song around it. Benge did knockout bass and drums. A great experience and totally out of the blue.’ released February 10, 2020 John Foxx (vocals/guitars), Benge (keyboards/percussion), Robin Simon (guitars), Hannah Peel (violin) ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Creep Show - Fall (7:21) 09. Creep Show - Safe and Sound (8:41) Creep Show brings together John Grant with the dark analogue electro of Wrangler (Stephen Mallinder / Phil Winter / Benge) to create Mr Dynamite - a debut album packed with experimental pop and surreal funk. Recorded in Cornwall with a lifetime’s collection of drum machines and synthesisers assembled by Benge and explored by every member of Creep Show, there’s a real sense of freedom in the shackles-off grooves, channelling the early pioneering spirit of the Sugarhill Gang through wires and random electric noise. This sense of adventure is also part of the interplay between the two vocalists, John Grant and former Cabaret Voltaire frontman Stephen Mallinder, who switch between oblique wordplay to sinister humour as Phil Winter and Benge continue to man-handle the machines. “Creep Show is Hydra,’ says Mallinder. ‘A beast with multiple heads and voices, so no one is quite sure who is saying and doing what. Everything is permitted and everything is possible.’ Grant: ‘I do like theatre of the absurd and some of it is that, but most of it is just having fun. We did a lot of laughing and just had a blast doing it.’ The creepy ‘alter-ego’ title track, ‘Pink Squirrel’’s vocoder kaleidoscope and Grant’s exhilarating croon on the nine minute ‘Safe And Sound’ are just some of the twists and hooks to be explored on this consistently inventive record. According to Mallinder the band “sprang fully formed a couple of years ago but in truth had been bubbling away for decades in a petri dish containing spores of seventies sci-fi, post–punk electronic music, bad taste, broken synthesizers, luscious film soundtracks, and dubious band t-shirts.” Their first show - their name hadn’t yet come to Benge in a dream - was at the Barbican in London late 2016 as part of an event celebrating 40 years of Rough Trade. Preferring not to live on past glories, Grant and Wrangler wrote a whole new set of material together. As Mallinder explains, “we thought the only way to work with someone was to lock the doors and wrestle each other until we could come out with entirely new and original stuff. Why not? If you work with someone, test yourself, see what’s buried under the soil.” Wrangler are no strangers to collaboration. In the studio they’ve teamed up with LoneLady, Tom Rogerson (currently working with Brian Eno) and Serafina Steer on their albums La Spark (2014) and White Glue two years later. As well as remixing Primal Scream, Gazelle Twin and John Grant (on ‘Voodoo Doll’), in 2015 they released a double LP of Modular synthesiser remixes entitled Sparked which included new takes on their music by Daniel Miller and Chris Carter (Chris & Cosey). Cotton Panic!, a forward-looking stage production commissioned by and performed at the Manchester International Festival in 2017, was the result of Wrangler joining forces with actor Jane Horrocks and writer Nick Vivian. Grant too enjoys working with other artists, sharing stages and songs with the likes of Elbow, Susanne Sundfør, Hercules & Love Affair and Tracey Thorn. His passion for electronic music - including Cabaret Voltaire - has influenced his last two albums Pale Green Ghosts (2013) and Grey Tickles, Black Pressure from 2015, eventually leading him to Wrangler’s sequencers and wonky drum machines. However, Creep Show is much more than the sum of its parts. It’s almost as if the four band members and their machinery were possessed by another force: “Mr Dynamite is real,” states Mallinder. “It’s disturbing, he blows shit up.” And it’s a spirit that wants to dance. For every weird, esoteric mood and texture explored there’s always a beat and a fresh sense of adventure, whether through the Space Invader electro of ‘Tokyo Metro’, squelchy synth-funk of ‘Modern Parenting’, the warped, experimental arc of ‘Endangered Species’ or ‘Lime Ricky’s ferocious breakbeat workout. On ‘K Mart Johnny’ ripped-up, distorted sounds and sinister voices accumulate on the cold electronics like flies on neon, but the rhythms and synth stabs still propel it forward, in this case into a bizarre story of childhood name-calling and revenge centred around a yellow-spotted toy dinosaur. The album ends with two of the longest tracks - the beautiful Kraftwerk-in-space, pristine but cosmic ‘Fall’ and the Moroder-esque odyssey, ‘Safe And Sound’. The latter is a brilliant climax to the album, Grant’s vocals at their most opulent and moving as he carries us all into the future with the words, “Billions of stars across oceans and time . . . I’m safe and sound in the arms of my destiny”. released March 16, 2018 ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)
