In 1998, he created a side-project called Micronaut, focusing on more instrumental music that was not necessarily appropriate for Sister Machine Gun. After disbanding Sister Machine Gun in 2007, he began his solo career and released the EP Cheap Sensation and the full-length album The Devil His Due. Chris also collaborates with Wade Alin from Christ Analogue on the IDM project Scanalyzer. In 2015 he rebanded Sister Machine Gun to release The Future Unformed on WTII. He was featured in the August 1996 issue of Playgirl as being among the ten sexiest male Rock musicians. In 1998, he founded Positron records. He also runs Audio Damage, a creator of music software plug-ins and synthesizer modules.  Micronaut, the style-spanning instrumental project of former Sister Machine Gun frontman Chris Randall, draws from the deep tradition of the Chicago electronic music scene, while keeping a definite rock feel with the judicious use of guitars and traditional song structures, instead of the "change every eight measures" formula of most electronic acts. From the arid analog syncopation of the self-titled first album (1998), through the IDM-influenced progressive house and drum 'n' bass rhythms of Io (2000) and Ganymede (2002), to the complex cinematic soundscapes of 2005's Europa, Micronaut releases have kept pace with the current state of electronic music, while carving out a niche that is distinct at the same time.The Micronaut project was begun in 1997 by Randall as an vehicle for releasing music that wasn't necessarily appropriate to the "industrial music" fans of Sister Machine Gun; by 2005, with the release of Europa and the Noise To Signal tour with label-mates Amish Rake Fight, Micronaut had morphed in to a project that could stand on its own. Indeed, Micronaut has superseded Sister Machine Gun to be Randall's main creative outlet, while numerous appearances in the soundtracks of video games and television shows have led to wider recognition and acceptance to join with the critical acclaim each release garners. Callisto, the next Micronaut release, will take the filmscapes and sophisticated rhythms of Europa a step further. "I've really started to pay attention to the music in movies, how it works with the images for sort of an emotional body-blow," says Randall. "My ultimate goal is to make an album that doesn't need a movie at all, but is a soundtrack that evokes imagery on its own." The six tracks on Resistor share a common theme of vintage analog sounds coupled with modern electronic music production, but this EP stands on its own as the culmination of 10 years of experimental electronic music. Resistor is the first of three planned stylistically similar EPs. Micronaut - Terminus (6:22) particulate is the latest in a string of experimental electronic music albums released by Chris Randall (of Sister Machine Gun) under his micronaut moniker. particulate departs from his previous forays in to this realm inasmuch as it is recorded entirely without the aid of modern conveniences like MIDI and digital audio workstations. The album was written entirely on the Roland CMU-800R, which is a music peripheral for the Apple //e computer. Every sound on this EP was either sequenced from the CMU-800R or played live, and the entirety was recorded to, and summarily mixed from, an analog 8-track tape recorder. Due to the nature of the MIDI-free environment, Chris used a limited palette of synthesizers and drum machines to record these four pieces.
