His Orchestra had two major strengths; dynamic, inventive soloists - and a closely-knit rhythm section that swung to perfection. Basie was also a particularly gifted pianist, and a leader capable of getting maximum effort and precision from his men. This combination of forces produced electrifying results - captured for posterity in his early 78 rpm records - a further selection of which are heard here in new digital stereo - impressions which seek to reveal the full "live" impact of one of the greatest Big Bands ever assembled.
Count Basie may have been unfortunate, financially, to have signed a "non-royalty" contract with Decca in 1937, but was lucky as far as posterity is concerned. American Decca had been established only three years earlier, in 1934, by Jack Capps (formerly of Brunswick) and E.R. Lewis (the London Stockbroker who had taken over British Decca). Their major policy was to produce quality records with top artistes at a selling price of 35c a record - as opposed to 75c for the products of their major competitor's. Decca was also an early contender in the never-ending "high-fidelity stakes". By 1937 the sound quality engraved into Decca's wax, although falling far short of modern audiofile standards, was becoming more adequate to the needs of reproducing the complex sounds emanating from a big-band, like the Count's, capable of delicacy and hard-drive in equal measure. In these transfers, I have tried to bring out as much as possible of the extended high and low ends of the original recordings - and have used stereo spread and reverberation to rekindle the power and dynamic expression which was so much a part of the Count's work - and which was unhappily diminished in the deadened acoustic of the Decca studio and the constraints of monophonic recording. A computer has been used to repair the effects of damage to otherwise mint pressings, and correct some of the most severe distortions present in the original waveforms. As a result, I hope you will hear more of the detail of the performances than might otherwise be possible - ranging from subtleties in the arrangements to the Count's infectious and enthusiastic burblings in the background. The Count, from the evidence of his grunts, gurgles and giggles at the keyboard, was obviously having a ball. So did I, working on this album - and I hope you will, too, as you listen to it!
