Loss and sadness are balanced with feelings of transcendence and fragility. Threaded emotions and evolving rhythms seemingly transmit an aura of pure sonic ambiance. Warm analogue frequencies cycle around reflective moods while skittering beats continue to expand throughout the inherent mangling of electrical wires. As an emotional snapshot of the heart, "Giving up the Ghost" fuels the mind with magnetic electricity and a sense of optimism in a world full of chaos. "Hummel's album ultimately impresses for the strong emotional core that emerges over the course of its unfolding; an audible human heart clearly beats at the core of this particular machine." - Textura "An astonishing debut of subtractiveLAD!" - Sutemos "As a storyteller, Hummel's talents are clear —- surging and shrinking, striking and retracting, he has crafted that rarest of creatures: an electronic album that's difficult to pigeonhole as mechanical." - Splendid Magazine "There is so much wonderful sound to be found here of a genuinely heart-felt quality... Highly recommended." - Grooves Magazine "I’m sure you will find yourself playing this release over and over and it will mature each time you listen. In a time when experimental electronica can be made with a flick of a switch, subtractiveLAD has chosen the difficult, yet rewarding, path of creating his own virtual instruments. This has formed the cornerstone of subtractiveLAD's unique sound. "Suture", heavy on emotion and menacing at times, has an expanded array of beat-work that is both head nodding and intensely deliberate with a depth that yields new elements with every listen. "... rises like a vapor in the mind while sustaining the body's need for movement music." - Igloo Magazine "... it's Suture's epic dimension that signifies the most dramatic development in Hummel's subtractiveLAD style." - Textura "There are some really beautiful sounds here. Each idea is fully explored. Each track is its own world." - Gridface "Suture is one of the best things that happened to me lately and it is obviously one of the best albums of such style. (10/10)" - Sutemos "The follow-up to Vancouver based Stephen Hummel's debut album on n5MD, "Giving Up the Ghost", continues to reach back to when people first felt they needed an alias in order to create Techno. The impassive anonymity hinted at something other, just as the discrete keyboards and neat noise-gated beats all pointed towards something that was beyond the individual self, beyond the human. The absence of identifiable emotion left behind a vast emotional space for the listener to confront. Hummel's carefully balanced melodies and deep production values don't so much fill that space as help define it. Its harsh sense of things collapsing suggests hiding behind a name is more about personal protection." - The Wire "The unearthly sounds Hummel's homemade synthesizers make recall the rough D.I.Y. feeling of the early Krautrock albums, which along with the woozy post-rock vibe of the album makes Suture that rarity: an electronica album that appeals as much to rockists as to club kids." - All Music "Beautifully evocative melodies are swallowed by ominous clouds of noise only to reappear smoother and more voluptuous on the other side." - London Milk released August 17, 2014 Written and produced by Stephen Hummel Mastered by Shahin Al Rashid at Medicine Man Mastering ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

In past outings subtractiveLAD has only hinted at such introspection and has let us see just a hint of such depth of psyche. This new more open aesthetic has seemingly given Hummel a newer confidence in his sound that has led him to push further its boundaries by adding elements such as guitar, field recordings, and even hints of vocal texture to his signature style of self-made synth melodies and compressed beats. Songs of defiance, love, exasperation, hope, loss and even pleasure are all compiled in such a way to lead you through a journey of great musical rewards. "Maybe the pressure was on for Hummel to deliver again, but he must've shrugged it off back at the ranch in Vancouver: This third LP doesn't miss any steps in showing off the label's faith in him." - Audiversity "The music contained throughout 'No Man's Land' shows a staggering attention to detail. Gentle piano lines, lulling synths, drifting vocals (especially on the gorgeous album closer "The Lucky Ones") combine gracefully with ascending waves of guitar distortion and captivating field recordings. It is rare for an album, with so many ambient moments, to pack such an emotional punch." - Boring Machines Disturbs Sleep "Though Hummel broadens out the subtractiveLAD sound with well-timed insertions of guitar, vocal texture, and field elements, it's not the expanded sonic resources that account for the album's impact but its emotive explorations of vulnerability and introspection." - Textura "... a subtractiveLAD album that feels more palpably human than either of its predecessors, with the overriding sense being that on No Man’s Land Hummel is revealing far more of himself with his most personal, contemplative and gentle collection yet." - Cyclic Defrost "I'm transported for an hour into the subconscious of a remarkable musician, an experience I find intensely human." - Evilsponge "By utilising swathes of fluid electronic layers, precise beats and intricate melodies, Hummel creates a warm yet very personal album laden with poignant atmosphere." - Side-Line Magazine released August 17, 2014 Written and produced by Stephen Hummel Mastered by Shahin Al Rashid at Medicine Man Mastering ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

It is this comfort which allows Apparatus to envelop the listener in a profoundly personal way. Lofty classic ambient refrains, shoegaze splendor and muted broken beat trickery are all stylistic fair game. Comparisons can be made to a wide rage of artists such as Ben Frost, Eno, Namlook, and even label mate Bitcrush. "... he incrementally shifts his sound yet again, purposefully adding to his already considerable repertoire." - Angryape "Throughout the hour-long set, subtractiveLAD's hazy ambiance and fluid textures blossom in ten tracks that are more typically celestial in character than overpoweringly aggressive." - Textura "Apparatus is easily Hummel’s most impressive and emotionally candid sounding album as subtractiveLAD to date, and a record truly deserving of n5MD’s self-described tag ‘emotional experimental electronica'." - Cyclic Defrost "Apparatus is an incredibly pleasing album to listen to from start to finish and should appeal to shoegazers everywhere." - The Skinny "Is it good? Put it this way – I think I just found my brand." - Evilsponge "Amongst the swelling ambience Hummel includes everything from guitar, synths, drums and layered synth/guitar drones to produce a varied, ever evolving and captivating album. The album serves as an extension of Hummel's previous album "Apparatus" (2008) and effortlessly flows between such genres as shoegaze, armchair electronica, post-rock, and classic ambient. Stylistically it seems far away from his debut "Giving up the Ghost" and in theory it is. Yet, Hummel has lead us on a journey that for the patient has yielded great rewards. "Hummel has done five albums in as many years but I’d be happy with another five. I’d love to see where the subLAD voyage takes us. For this is a truly ambient experience fusing feelings and landscape. And I suspect the journey isn’t quite over yet." - [sic] magazine "... the nearly-two-hour 'Where the Land Meets the Sky' is as close to a definitive statement of the subtractiveLAD art as has been presented to date. It also bears mentioning that with the release Hummel realizes n5MD's “emotionally experimental music” credo in grand and seemingly effortless style." - Textura released August 20, 2014 Written and produced by Stephen Hummel Mastered by Shahin Al Rashid at Medicine Man Mastering ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

The result is one of subtractiveLAD's most lush yet threadbare albums to date. Eno could be referenced, although Hummel now features the guitar as a primary instrument. Further, "Life at the End of the World" is not all ambient movements and variations on a theme. At the three quarters point the album takes a tense turn with passages that would not be out of place on albums from Ben Frost or Jasper TX. One wonders what is really at the end of Hummel's world? "Life at the End of the World" is Hummel's catharsis, anxiety, and joy. We can hear that he is at a crossroads in his life and subsequently has created his largest most majestic ripple in the pond yet. "Hummel allows his music to unravel, to tell its story and find its own way. Always heavy with deep emotive qualities, each track flows, undulates and drifts along with steady ease, textures and layers slowly interacting, coming in and out of the sound space, changing the mood as the emphasis shifts." - Igloo Magazine "So what's life like at the end of the world for Stephen Hummel? Fans of Hummel's work know that at any given moment his songs can thoughtfully veer into more "classic" electronic music territory. On previous efforts, artists such as Boards of Canada and Brian Eno have been name-dropped as stylistic signposts but now such widescreen chill-room workouts are only one part of Hummel's big picture. Hummel has also injected elements of Jazz, Shoegaze and even Industrial into his works and excels in making such incorporations transparent and cohesive. With his latest album “Kindred”, Hummel adds the Berlin School era of Krautrock (and more specifically its close, more electronically minded sibling, Kosmische Musik) to his long list of inspirations. Hummel does so by utilizing more of the analog synthesizer sound-bed-of-choice of artists like Cluster, Ashra, and one of his biggest influences, Tangerine Dream. By mixing all these elements, Hummel is using his own history as well as the tradition of his influences to create an album that is on one hand somewhat future-retro but on the other undeniably fresh. An amalgam of the new and the old with a no apologies level of honesty and emotion. Each song a journey to some landscape we've never seen before. "Elements associated with previous subtractiveLAD releases surface in the form of post-rock signifiers and electric guitar playing, but the styles and approach of his past work are downplayed, making Kindred a brand new chapter for the chameleonic Hummel, even if it's one that finds its inspiration in the pioneering electronic music associated with groups such as Tangerine Dream and Cluster." - Textura "While Kindred does prove a challenging listen, especially if you’re trying to make it from one end to the other in a single trip, the colourful new galaxies that you stumble across along the way are spectacularly radiant." - [sic] magazine "An excellent, deeply immersive album from Hummel that’s also his strongest and most fully-realised collection of music as subtractiveLAD to date." - Cyclic Defrost "Heady, uncompromising; subtractiveLAD’s work has rarely afforded so many risks and rewarded so many backhanded accolades." - The Skeleton Crew Quaterly released August 28, 2014 Written and produced by Stephen Hummel Mastered by 37N, 122W ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Two years in the making, "The Language of Flowers" finds Hummel at his most deeply emotional, with haunting performances, based primarily around the electric guitar, electroacoustic instrumentation and analogue synthesizers. The bed tracks for the album were conceived shortly after the release of "Kindred", born out of Hummel's need to deal with some recent losses of family and friends. Ultimately, Hummel found that he needed to get some space from the heavy tone of the album, after the birth of his daughter, which led to the much more upbeat songs on "Meld". It took until the later part of 2012 for Hummel to put the finishing touches on "The Language of Flowers" and begin preparing it for release. The resulting four long-player tracks explore the emotional arc from hope to loss, through to acceptance and transcendence. "The Language of Flowers" is the first subtractiveLAD album to be released completely independently and, as such, Hummel took it upon himself to extend the musical themes of the album into the album's packaging, through his own photography and art design. The album is Hummel's most achingly personal, to date. Textura: "In many respects, the fifty-three-minute release plays like an overview of all of the stylistic places subtractiveLAD has visited during its lifespan. Highly charged episodes of ambient, post-rock, and emotional electronica appear, sometimes within the same piece..." [sic] Magazine: "There is hope within sadness and sadness within hope." The release is a companion to the 2014 subtractiveLAD album, entitled Wilderness, and celebrates the first ten years of subtractiveLAD music. First Steps also includes two rare remixes of tracks from the first subtractiveLAD release, entitled Giving Up the Ghost (released via n5MD in 2005). At the beginning of 2014, while putting the finishing touches on what would become the Wilderness album, Stephen Hummel realized that the year would mark an anniversary of sorts for his subtractiveLAD project. The sessions that produced the tracks for the first subtractiveLAD album occurred in 2003-2004, over a decade before the most recent subtractiveLAD release. Those early sessions produced a large amount of material as Hummel experimented with the musical style that would eventually evolve into the first few subtractiveLAD albums. Curated personally by Hummel, the 10 previously unreleased tracks were selected from over 20 tracks from the time period. The tracks have been carefully edited, mastered and sequenced into an album that stands on its own in the subtractiveLAD catalogue. released April 14, 2014 Written and produced by Stephen Hummel Mastered by Shahin Al Rashid at Medicine Man Mastering foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

The balance (or imbalance?) between technology and the natural world is the core concept that “Wilderness” was born out of. A journey is also at the heart of the album; a symbolic journey into a previously undiscovered land that might also be interpreted as a personal journey through pain to a state of joy. Themes of dominance and submission are at play throughout. Hummel used analogue synthesizers as his primary instrument for the entire album and sequencers as the primary method of composition. The precise rhythms and patterns of the sequences became the foundation that Hummel used to perform live upon, constantly varying the timbre and structure of the synthesized tones in an organic fashion, exemplifying the tension between technology and natural expression. Stylistically, "Wilderness" is perhaps most related to the first two albums in the subtractiveLAD catalogue: “Giving up the Ghost” and “Suture”. Looking back as it looks forward, “Wilderness” will also be released with a Bandcamp exclusive (pay what you want) album of previously unreleased material, originally recorded in 2003-2004, at the beginning of the subtractiveLAD project. The companion album will be called “First Steps” and will help celebrate the first ten years of subtractiveLAD music. A Closer Listen: "This is the sound of an artist at the height of his powers and the result is an ambitious yet wholly successful album." Textura: "Oft epic in pitch, the music comes at the listener in waves, its scale enormous and its power seemingly indomitable. Feeling the need to approach his music creation in a more tactile way, “Nucleus” was composed almost completely using hardware instruments, sequencers and effects, including a barrage of analogue synthesizers, an MPC and various stomp-boxes. The album explores new sonic territory for the subtractiveLAD project, while representing an emphatic return to the IDM/classic analogue fusion that originally defined the subtractiveLAD sound. Listeners following subtractiveLAD’s journey over the past decade will find the familiar strong emotional core inside music made from wires and machines. The original three tracks have been remastered for this release, along with a hard to find b-side from that time period entitled "Containing Light". The closing track "Nocturne" was to become one of the most sought-after and requested tracks of the subtractiveLAD catalog, mostly via file sharing. The track being shared was titled incorrectly, however, as "Song 3" which created a great deal of confusion for fans wanting to actually purchase the original track/album. "Past the Horizon" presents completely remastered versions of the tracks as a stand-alone full-length album. This music is subtractiveLAD's deepest dive into long-form ambient guitar and is arguably some of the most beautiful and meditative music of his career. Piano features prominently on all tracks but one. Though noise is a primary thread that ties these tracks together, these pieces explore the more meditative side of noise timbres while avoiding the more abrasive and extreme textures often associated with noise music. The performed piano parts also provide an emotional counterpoint to the modular explorations. This music is great for listening to when waiting for things that never come, beginning great quests seeking meaning in tiny things, hiding from the world in a blanket fort and / or remaining hopeful in the face of disaster. This music has a density and weight to it from the layered distorted tones but manages to maintain a meditative and perhaps hopeful energy throughout. Keen observers of my recent work will notice that this 3-track EP is the third such EP I have released in as many months. 'Fade' is the third and final chapter in a trilogy of sorts that began with 'Weightless' and then 'Rising Tide'. You will find that the algorithm I built has allowed for quite a wide range of timbres and textures. Some tracks feature the mechanics of the guitar coming through more overtly, while others pretty much obscure any clear aspect of the original guitar sound. As technical as it was to setup initially, once it was established, the algorithm was very inspiring and the tracks just rolled out of me (thus the rather high track count). The mood for this release shifts around through meditative ambient to dense shoegaze and even playful rhythmical experimentation. There is an arc / journey of emotion that one can experience if you listen from beginning to end. The album ended up being fairly cinematic, overall. It's heavy... and mellow? In the way a torrent of water can smooth a stone, this music will chill you out with a vengeance. I find that there is also something rather carnal about the enrapturing intensity of these sounds. Safe word is "pineapple". “Stop what you’re doing and listen to this— especially the first track “Reaching Through” if you only have 21 minutes to spare… I’ve been stuck on this track for days. It’s an evocative work with broad, expansive gestures, downshifts that resonate in the bellows of a planet, and soaring updrafts… This whole thing certainly bears repeating, and it’s now in constant rotation on my home setup.” Selected as one of the top releases of 2022 - Igloo Magazine Recorded, mixed and mastered at 24 bit / 96 kHz for your high resolution pleasure. released February 14, 2022 Composed, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered by Stephen Hummel. foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

The tracks have a strong narrative arc that weaves them to each other. There is an interplay between light and dark that plays out through the whole album. Inspired, in part, by classical mythology (especially Ovid's Metamorphoses), this album examines the concept of transformation with the difficulties and the revelations that are embodied in the process. "Music of this quality can move us toward something higher at the best of times, or at the very least exist as a reminder of our collective human potential, creativity, and spirituality. "... characterised by minimalist constructions that showcase the bare building materials and structural elements over decorative design..." "... letting the organic shapes shine through stripped-down materials..." While in the late stages of making this album, it struck me that the words used to describe brutalist architecture could also be used to describe the music I was creating. I find architecture to be fascinating, especially in the ways the spaces we inhabit and surround ourselves with can influence our psychology and sense of well-being (or lack thereof). There is a parallel with music, of course, in the way that it can shift your emotional state as it permeates your senses. With this album, I wanted to make music that possessed both the hypnotic precision of sequenced and arpeggiated synthesizers with the dynamic energy of acoustic drums. I also experimented with key modulations as a way to (hopefully) heighten the emotional impact of the tracks. As always, this music has been a labor of love for me and I hope it finds a place in your life. Stephen Hummel - Find My Own Way (6:20) 24-96 In the early 80s there was a music and dance revolution happening in the urban centers of the USA that would resonate out into the world and inspire even a young kid growing up in rural BC, Canada. The pioneering Electro sounds of artists like Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaataa and Herbie Hancock had inspired new ways of making music and young people were quick to translate what they heard into the amazing new dance moves that became breakdancing (and all its variants). I became obsessed with this music and the moves… finding tapes of extended breakdance mixes and posters that broke down the moves for me to learn. I was not alone. The spirit of early Hip Hop and Electro was so universal in its appeal and message… a coming together and a positive vision of the future that could be felt in this exciting new music. The music broke the rules of what popular music could be and the dancing seemed to break the rules of gravity itself. Inspired by my love of early Electro and Hip Hop, I wanted to make an album that was built from the blueprints of the music I love while not simply giving-in completely to nostalgia. With this album, I wanted to approach this music from my past but from where I am now. Classic analogue synths, drum machines, vocoders and vintage effects are all in the mix here but produced with a more modern aesthetic in mind. Our future will be the product of our present choices, it comes to us through our past triumphs and mistakes. The only future worth getting to is the one we get to together. This album is about looking inwards to find a better way of truly seeing each other. Stephen Hummel - Automaton (8:24) 24-96 "Six tracks shattering an hour’s worth of crunched rhythms, both dark and light... fractured drums, fuzzy synths, and percussive glitch from the outer realms... tracks expand and contract to form visceral electronic mayhem..." - Igloo Magazine Gritty, crunchy, Electro-infused IDM. Analogue synths and a drum machine put through a granular meat grinder. This is the most full on Braindance / IDM music I have ever made. My early subtractiveLAD albums leaned very heavily into the IDM realm and I have dipped in and out of the style, here and there, over the years. With Component, I wanted to try some new things and see where I could push the granular editing and mixing stuff. It's a pretty in-your-face album... a little relentless, with no real moments to catch your breath. There is still a strong melodic sensibility in these tracks, however, and a hands-on feel in the rhythms. My approach was to find a balance between the emotional punch of melody and groove, with the complex technical work in the editing / mixing. While working on this album, it struck me how this music is a kind of *cyborg* music. This kind of music could never be made without machines and computers at the front and center of the creative process... but these machines were always controlled by human hands and a human mind. You will find that the track titles reflect this theme. This music is good for those moments in life when you want to reorganize things with heavy machinery, or look back on past mistakes with a flamethrower, or even look into the future with an open heart made of wires and batteries.
