Self description of the project: "In East Germany in the early 1970’s Martin Zeichnete worked as a sound editor for DEFA, (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned film studio. Like many young East Germans of the time he would listen furtively to West German radio at night and became infatuated with the Kosmische Musik or ‘Krautrock’ epitomised by the likes of Kraftwerk, Neu! and Cluster emerging from his neighbouring country. Martin, a keen runner, hit upon the idea of using the repetitive, motorik beats of this new music as a training aid for athletes. He thought it could benefit the mind as well as the body with the pulsing, hypnotic music bringing focus. A ‘borrowed’ prototype of Andreas Pavel’s Stereobelt showed Martin the technology to provide music on the move already existed and could easily be adapted for runners. After sharing his concept with colleagues Martin was taken from his studio to East Berlin, quizzed by the authorities about his ideas and, fearing the worst, was surprised to find himself put to work by the Nationales Olympisches Komitee immediately. Installed in a cold Berlin studio with the few electronic instruments the state could supply, (Martin asked for a Moog but was refused), he began one of the strangest journeys in music. Known to the government as State Plan 14.84L, Martin and his fellow musicians informally called it ‘Projekt Kosmischer Läufer’ (Cosmic Runner). For the next 11 years Martin would be spirited to Berlin to work on tracks with little notice. He created hours of music fusing traditional rock instruments with synthesizers, early drum computers, tape slicing and looping techniques he and his engineer formulated themselves. His output included tracks for running at various paces, warm up pieces, ‘ambient’ music to play in gyms during training and pieces for artistic gymnastic routines." This is widely believed to be an elaborate hoax with a lot of manufactured evidence of the existence of Martin Zeichnete. There were a lot of strange things happening in the GDR, but this story is highly unlikely. The name "Martin Zeichnete" points toward Drew McFadyen as the master mind behind this, as "Zeichnete" in German language is the indicative form of the verb "zeichnen". Zeichnen translated to english would be "drawing" or "to draw". The indicative form of "drawing" is "drew". Drew like in Drew McFadyen. The last name "Zeichnete" does not exist in Germany - there are about 800.000 surnames in the German history, but "Zeichnete" is not one of them. Drew runs the label Unknown Capability Recordings that releases all of / and only the works of Kosmischer Läufer and he was also on stage presenting and performing some works of Martin Zeichnete during a tour with Yann Tiersen (these recordings were also published as Live In Graz). When asked in an interview Drew explained that "Martin Zeichnete" supposedly is not the real name of the artist, but a pseudonym as well as an injoke towards his new friend Drew McFadyen. First, a running program (Tracks 1-3) at 164BPM finds Zeichnete at his most hypnotic, particularly on the motorik, rolling 'Jenseits des Horizonts'. This set ends with the elegiac 'Für Seelenbinder', a song dedicated to Olympic wrestler and communist hero Werner Seelenbinder. Particularly exciting is the second part (Tracks 4 - 10), a soundtrack to a lost animated film UCR obtained only a few months ago. In the spring of 1976 Zeichnete learnt that the NOK der DDR hoped to launch a bid to bring the 1984 Summer Games to East Berlin. Excited, he returned to DEFA in Dresden where he and an animator colleague conceived ‘Traum von der goldenen Zukunft’ (Dream Of The Golden Future), a 20-minute cartoon they hoped could be used to promote the bid. An inspired Zeichnete composed the music in a week. The bid and thus the film were abandoned and the music was cast aside where it lay hidden and forgotten. Until now. ‘Traum von der goldenen Zukunft’ — May 1976 — SYNOPSIS We meet 13-year-old Werner who lives in East Berlin and 10-year-old Sabine who lives in the countryside. Through their eyes we see different aspects of life in the socialist idyll of the DDR — farming, busy factories, strong families etc. They are both members of sports clubs. Werner wants to be a runner and Sabine aspires to be a gymnast. We see them going to their beds and we enter their world of dreams. These dreams take them to the year 1984 and the Olympic Games which are being held in East Berlin. They fly over the city in ‘energy globes’ and see the incredible, futuristic stadiums that have been built. They begin to explore. Werner hovers above the stadium and watches the athletes of all nations parade around the track. Sabine's energy globe is floating under the Olympic pool. She looks up in wonder to see the swimmers glide above her. Werner is now looking down at the 100-metre final. The race is won by a DDR athlete. He realises it is his 21-year-old self. Sabine is above the gymnastics arena. She sees a DDR athlete score a perfect 10 on the floor. It is her at 18. Both children are now above the main stadium to see Werner receive his gold medal. We see that athletes from across the world have come together in peace through sport. The children see each other in this shared vision and wave. In a swirl of colour and sound they awaken back in 1976. Inspired by their dreams they go to train. The sunrise is golden — END released November 30, 2015 Music by Martin Zeichnete. It was at the Breton musician's 2013 concert in Berlin that Unknown Capability Recordings' Drew McFadyen first met Zeichnete and the road to his musical re/discovery began. UCR’s first release from the Kosmischer Läufer archive that year led to calls for Zeichnete to emerge from the shadows and play live. Reluctant to do so himself, he was delighted to see the concerts which led to this recording go ahead. Across thirteen countries in early 2015 as part of the Infinity Tour Tiersen's band performed a set of Zeichnete's songs to packed halls. Eager to do the source material justice the group combined analogue electronics with live instruments to faithfully conjure up the sound and spirit of Zeichnete's originals. While working as a sound editor for DEFA in the 1970’s and 80's Martin Zeichnete led a secret, parallel life writing music to train and inspire East Germany’s athletic elite. This fourth compilation of Zeichnete’s work will take us on a cosmic voyage of both the body and the mind... Tracks 1 to 4 of this collection contains a running program at 150 bpm taken from various years of the project. After the warm-up fanfare of ‘Zeit zum Laufen 150’ (1977) we launch into the sleek, motorik engine of ‘Goldene Tage’(1982). The second running piece ‘Lichtgeschwindigkeit’ (1983) comes from one of the final Kosmischer Läufer sessions where Zeichnete used a drummer and bass player in the studio. The haunting waltz ‘Der Leuchtturm am Ende der Zeit’(1976) provides a calming warm-down. Tracks 5 to 9 give us a first listen to a different aspect of Zeichnete’s work.1978’s ‘Der Weg’ (The Path), was the culmination of his experiments to bring focus to athletes’ minds using music and images. As Zeichnete recalls: ‘As early as 1974 we were looking to provide a mental stimulus for the athletes as well as physical. We began with alpha wave projection and used dream-machine-like devices with an instructor reading inspirational messages. These early attempts appeared to have no real value to the athletes so I progressed to making a film with a suitable soundtrack. To view ‘Der Weg’ the subject would be comfortably seated in a darkened room wearing headphones. The film would be projected large-scale onto a concave wall filling their field of vision’. The film began with a voice-over while a light pulsing gently at 10hz appeared on the screen. Once the subject was attuned to their surroundings the film then progressed as follows: Phase I – Forst - As the music begins we see scenes of the universe, of life on earth and nature. We end up in a beautiful forest with sunlight playing through the leaves. This section evoked a sense of calm. Phase II – Das Meer - The deepest part of the meditation. We are flying across the ocean as the sun is rising. Then we are under the sea. All is tranquil as we move among the shoals of fish. Phase III – Heimat - We are now in modern East Germany. We see the country we love. We see the faces of the people we as athletes will represent. Positive messages appear on the screen. Phase IV – Morgen - We see our fellow athletes training and winning great victories for our country. Captions on the screen tell us that this is our future!
