Adaline - So Low (4:52) "He rises, afraid to turn off the light" So begins "LXII," the title track from Adult Karate's debut EP. Twinkling, woozy keyboards elicit images of sun reflecting off of choppy waves. Building in intensity behind KC Maloney's cryptic ruminations, they finally wash away, diffusing into a sea spray of synth decay. Spare, rattle-and-click percussion takes their place, pitched-down voices bouncing around the interior, Spaghetti western guitar scraping in the empty spaces- "the peace, it grows, it comes and goes." Adult Karate is KC Maloney, half of the gauze-and-gossamer duo Radar Cult. Though Radar Cult's sound is fairly spartan, Adult Karate takes the use of empty space even further, hollowing out the skeleton of electronic music- house, techno, ambient- until only the memory is left. These songs are imprints on an empty bed, images on a burial shroud; a wisp of something gone, its impression indelible. LXII's middle section in particular channels this austere atmosphere. "Chased" could be described as house music, though this particular house is haunted, chilly, its hidden corners populated by cold ghosts. Guitar washes and minor key piano conjure images of a suspicious figure glimpsed out of the corner of the eye. "Falling on your sword/For things you never got to be". "This Is Never" propels the nightmare vibes forward, its John Carpenter synth washes brushing up against clattering, reverb-laden snares before being overcome by Maloney's vocals, plaintive and distant. "Murderer," announced by a lone, mournful trumpet, segues into a strutting, crunchy electronic pulse, building gradually into a moody groove, all blues and grays, a night time drive through an industrial ghost town as Maloney sings about broken dreams. Then, finally, "So Low", aided by the vulnerable vocals of Adeline, closes out the album on a slightly more hopeful note, a slow burn that turns the melancholy organ at its center into an anchor of hopefulness. As Maloney joins Adeline in the track's climax, what began as a forlorn lover's declaration becomes a joyous duet. Like the album's cover, it is a bit of pink, a bit of warmth, peeking out of the blue and gray. released August 19, 2016

When I listen back to it, I guess I see it as an expression of gratitude: gratitude that my actual life didn’t end the way it does in this alternate timeline. To keep it interesting I moved around a bit, genre-wise, but I tried to make it as cohesive sounding as possible. I think I was able to maintain my “sound” throughout all the different musical avenues. released August 3, 2018

Maloney.
The “LXII” EP was released 2016 on Plug Research Records and cemented Maloney’s arrival as a solo artist. LXII’s first single, “So Low” (feat. Adaline), garnered attention from a plethora of music blogs and online media outlets (including The FADER) and was added to several influential Spotify playlists. The new EP “Indoors” is set to be released 3/31/17 and sees Maloney crafting a sonic tapestry comprised of airy sounding cinematic post rock textures and trippy, ethereal soundscapes neatly juxtaposed against the traditional acid house elements that were present on LXII. Less introspective than the first EP, “Indoors” is unapologetic and beaming with the confidence and wisdom only gained through having lived, loved and learned. Album opener “From The Dust” serves as a breezy, infectiously catchy song that invokes the Californian spirit of Fleetwood Mac and conjures up images of palm trees swaying in the wind against a technicolor sunset. The track is pleasantly uplifting, freeing and cathartic, giving you permission to let go of any extra baggage or emotional restraints holding you back from living life on your own terms. This fits in thematically with the “Indoors” EP as a whole, which is lyrically centered around the concept of people who are stuck or in the process of becoming unstuck; whether it be because they’ve been ostracized from certain societal sectors for their sexual identity (Coming Home/The Apostate), or they just can’t let go of someone from their past (Friction). It’s a bold collection of songs that highlight the beauty and distress of those yet to find themselves.

Adaline - Friction (4:24) Adaline brings the most perfectly delicate vocals to adorn Maloney's dreamy production. Having worked with her for his previous track "So Low," when Adult Karate found himself in a roadblock with writing, he knew that Adaline would deliver. With her contributions, Maloney says that "the stuff she wrote made it sound like a duet." We're happy to see these two teaming up again! Look for "Friction" and Adult Karate's new Indoors EP out March 31st via Plug Research Records. released February 15, 2017

Amp Live - Traces (4:39) "Traces" is about a dream I had where I kept trying to see someone's face, but every time I went to turn them around to face me, it was their back again. It was very odd and frustrating, but it was visually very strong. So I wanted to transpose that feeling and visual into a song about two lovers who are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again until it all falls apart. I was incredibly lucky to collaborate with the amazing Amp Live for the music on this track. His particular brand of strong and deep alt-hip hop beats allowed me to explore my version of R&B vocals, which was an awesome experience. Very happy with how it turned out! released June 23, 2017

John Tejada - Your Ghost (Speaking in Tongues Remix) (6:37) 03.Adult Karate feat. Adaline - Del Mar (Vanity Mirror Remix) (5:56) Break Me is song about adopting false confidence to gain something you’ve convinced yourself you want, whether it be in personal relationships, romantic relationships or in the world at large.
It’s me wishing people (myself included) were capable of being more authentic.
I had written the chorus on piano 3 years ago. Most ideas like that fade away with time, but this melody kept coming up until I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
I took that as a sign that I needed to turn it into a full song. The incredibly talented Drew Aron (who plays with me for live shows) wrote and performed all the guitar parts.
I feel like his guitar adds a beautifully dark dimension to the song that takes it to the next level. released September 20, 2019
