Black Elk (7:20) Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 3 from 29. August 2011 REM GENRE "Progressive Rock" ----------------------- The purely instrumental and jamming spirit of the Finnish quintet may quickly lead the listener to their influences; however, the variety of ideas and their multi-faceted character will excite even the most suspicious. The beautiful soundscapes created by the double guitars, the keys and the discreet touches by the flute in the opening Nautilus Part 1 bring to mind the psychedelic prog of our beloved Swedes Agusa, while the slightly less impressive Part 2 continues in almost the same pattern with its most dynamic finale. Those who expect the rest of the album to follow the same paths are completely misguided. The eastern ethnic elements in the excellent Chafa Azeno and Marracech add an oriental spirit to the album.
Hadal Sherpa continues to offer surprises to the listener. In Black Elka the five musicians successfully combine the oriental spirit with psychedelic trippy parts, reminding us of Ozric Tentacles. Abyss, the less ‘crazy’ composition here, takes us through a journey, with a typical Floydian diffused atmosphere, and the guitar solo being among the top moments of the album. Finally, Ikaros and Heracleion (both obvious references to Greece and Greek mythology) manage to balance uniquely between atmospheric and aggressive jamming on the one hand, and between progressive alternations and northern melancholy on the other. Οn a technical and compositional level, Hadal Sherpa rightfully deserve a very high rating bearing also in mind that this is a new band. The crystal clear production and the wonderful cover art are very impressive, too. The only negative factors here are the fact that they haven’t weaned from their influences yet, as well as the long duration of the album, which ultimately leads to some less interesting moments. Nevertheless, the impression is so positive that we have no choice but to follow closely the next steps of the Finnish progsters!
