He is best known for being part of Fila Brazillia.After disbanding his first commercially released band Ashley & Jackson on Big Life records, he co-founded Fila Brazillia with David McSherry in 1990. Together they released 10 critically acclaimed lp's and produced over 70 remixes for artists as diverse as Radiohead, Busta Rhymes, Black Uhuru, Simple Minds, James, A Certain Ratio and Moloko. He formed Pork Recordings with David Brennand in 1990 then 23 Records in '99 with Sim Lister and David McSherry and finally Steel Tiger Records in 2006 with Lister. More of an umbrella for his various projects than a label per se. His other writing and production collaborations include Heights of Abraham; J*S*T*A*R*S and The Cutler. He's released two solo lp's as The Solid Doctor : How About Some Ether and Beats Means Highs. A third, entitled "Saudade" was released on his own imprint Déclassé in March 2014. Numerous remixes, from Harold Budd and Theoretics to Jon Kennedy and Yesking have been undertaken in a solo capacity. Fabric nightclub has played host to many Cobby DJ sets and this was rewarded with an appearance on Fabric 18 alongside fellow Hull alumni Bobby Beige and Bliss. He co-produced Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli's debut solo l.p. 'The Twilight Singers' in 2000 and co-wrote and produced 'Three White Roses and a Budd ep with Bill Nelson and avant garde American composer Harold Budd. He's worked with Darren Emerson on his solo lp, in an engineering and writing capacity. His collaboration with Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder is under the guise of Hey Rube. Adam Regan from Different Drummer Records and Leftfoot promotions in Birmingham is also a regular collaborator. Their project, 'Chieftain'. Cobby has DJ'd in many places around the world including Croatia, Sydney, San Francisco, New York and Tokyo. He has performed live in Europe, Japan and the United States. Film and advertising As Fila Brazillia (with David McSherry) his music has been used in films, including Riding Giants directed by Stacy Peralta - and adverts, including for Nokia. As J*S*T*A*R*S (with Sim Lister) his music has been used for adverts including for Fiat and The John Lewis Partnership. In 2013 Steve Cobby provided the soundtrack for the Hull 'UK City of Culture 2017' bid film - 'This City Belongs to Everyone', produced by Nova Studios - on 20 November 2013 Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire was announced as the winning City, and so as UK City of Culture 2017. Solo Cobby releases work under the pseudonyms, The Solid Doctor and J J Fuchs. In March 2014, Cobby released his first Solo album for 17 years entitled "Saudade" on his own imprint Déclassé - DCLS 001. Collaborations with David Brennand a.k.a. Porky to form The Cutler; singles released during 2007 and 2008 include Stiletto, Pickaxe, and Cinquedea. Debut album Cutler was released July 2008 and the Black Flag EP in 2009. The second album release (September 2012) was The Best Things in Life Aren't Things with vocalists Andrew Taylor and Russell Morgan. The most recent release (10 June 2013) from The Cutler is their third album Everything Is Touching Everything Else with vocalists Isobel Helen, Andrew Taylor, Archie and Sheffield's alt-folk outfit Little Glitches - all on Steel Tiger Records. with Stephen Mallinder, a co-founder of Cabaret Voltaire, to form Hey, Rube!; first album release Can You Hear me Mutha? Kicking things off is a really special collaborative 12” from Steve Cobby, the Hull-based producer best known as one half of downbeat legends Fila Brazillia, and Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire fame. Throne of Blood is honored to be working with such towering influences, and excited to be bringing some truly special recordings to life. The proceedings kick off with “Tumblefish” a cosmic soup of hangdrum samples and breakbeats backed by an acidic bassline built for Balearic b-boys. Mark E’s remix strips the proceedings back, morphing “Tumblefish” into a grinding chugger that’s equal parts techno and house. Things get really interesting on the B side with Cobby and Mal versioning one of the holiest of holy grails in leftfield music, “Vitamin C” by krautrock legends, Can. Drenched in echo and anchored by a mechanically teutonic beat, their version swaps the moody desperation of the original for a dislocated mechanical swagger. TOB label manager Max Pask’s dub raises the tempo and retrofits “Vitamin C” for maximum dancefloor impact. Closing things out, Correspondant/Voyeurhythm hotshot Man Power returns to TOB with a driving remix layering drum machines, shambolic synths, and a driving bassline to close out the ep. released April 8, 2016

Cobby is one of the members of the pioneering electronic outfit Fila Brazillia while Welton is the man behind the Myth! project, whose “False Profits” EP was released last year on Posthuman’s Balkan Recordings label. In fact, Cobby has known Welton’s aunt for 20 years and Laurie has been a fan of Fila Brazillia since the early ‘90s. So when Laurie was asked by Steve to collaborate with him, he jumped at the chance. The fruits of their collaboration are the three tracks on the “Absolute” EP. This release is truly an international affair; the label, Adam Warped’s Whiskey Pickle imprint, is based in Austin, Texas, the artists are from the UK, while a remix of “Absolute” comes courtesy of New Yorkers Whatever/Whatever, a duo staffed by Bryan Mette and legendary NY DJ, producer and remixer Justin Strauss. “Absolute,” in its original form, is a tough, but breezy, chugger with a chunky, forward-lurching bass line, loose, splashing beats and lush, pretty, synth tones. A beautiful, electric piano chord punctuates proceedings while a sample from Laurie’s favorite guru intones “Absolute existence, absolute knowledge and absolute bliss” throughout. It’s Balearic accented house of the highest order. “Limoncello” is a seductive exercise in placing delicately balanced chords, Rhodes flourishes and unusual tones in close proximity. These tones are probably gleaned from some of the unconventional instruments and odd items Laurie uses in the studio. He owns a Moroccan instrument called a Quarkeb and used a pair of toy, plastic hands, he got in a Christmas cracker, to create castanet sounds. The track is subtly acidic, pushed by an understated bass line, a striding beat and nicely placed claps. A number of different keyboard sounds wheel around the mix and create a gorgeous sunset or early morning feel that is hard to resist. The EP finishes with a remix of “Absolute” by Whatever/Whatever. It is a stargazing and elegant invention that sits atop a buzzing, chewy bass line, which marches boldly through the track. The guru sample appears regularly and as the track progresses the bass line becomes increasingly acidic while a number of luscious keyboard sounds appear, fade and reappear. The drive of the bass line, as it converses with a woody, crashing snare, leads to a dramatic, synth chord sequence that lifts the track and creates a sense of joyful urgency that will make this tune an effective building tool for the DJ who likes to take his crowd on an ever escalating, emotional ride. This is a musically satisfying and very danceable release that will appeal to DJs in several genres. Pork was formed in 1991 by Cobby and fellow Hullster/flatmate Dave Pork in order to release the first single by Cobby's then-side project, Fila Brazillia (Fila has since become his focus), following which he began releasing solo material under the Solid Doctor name. He released two full-lengths within a year (one of them, How About Some Ether?, a double-disc compilation of singles) and helped attract critical attention to Pork with a blend of instrumental hip-hop, dub, funk, and house that would soon propel labels such as Mo'Wax and Cup of Tea into the spotlight. In order to locate them a trawl through an inordinate amount of DAT tapes was in order. My labelling skills have never been above mediocre and so it proved to be a laborious task. It was whilst performing this search that I discovered a substantial amount of unreleased work. Not having listened to it for the better part of two decades I was surprised by how many songs had stood the test of time. With this in mind I decided to include much of the new trove in the form of bonus discs. Disk 1 & 2 contain the original tracks in the same running order, but without segues and remastered. Disk 3 and 4 is the bulk of the recently unearthed work. Ten of the selections on the 95 release were in fact culled from considerably longer versions. Disk 5 contains six of the unadulterated ‘mother’ tracks in their entirety, plus an alternate extended version of O Say Krevlon The debut solid doctor releases were four 12” e.p.’s entitled Losing Patients Vol 1 to 4 with a total of ten songs thereon, four of which I eventually included on HASE. After all, if you've got a 3G connection, reasonably priced tablet and local coffee house you can do almost anything, at least until those artisanal grounds send you into cardiac arrest. Remarkable then, that the world was nearly deprived of these three sonic gems from Chieftain. The collaborative vehicle (image a tandem) of Fila Brazilia legend Steve Cobby and Birmingham mainstay Adam Regan, Chieftain made a brief and ill-fated appearance in the digital realm back in 2013, delivering a killer package of jazzy downbeat, piano house and island funk which was lost in the face of label ineptitude and online ignorance. Luckily for those of us with ears and a turntable, Mr Cobby is a man of stern stuff. Making fine use of his stubborn Yorkshire grit, Hull's finest son has waded through copyright calamity to give this material a much deserved moment in the vinyl spotlight through his Déclassé imprint. 'Out Of My Life' struts into the room to the laid back funk of a fine breakbeat, pours itself a drink and starts to hold court. Mellow jazz chords and lithe sequences add a sophisticated texture while sumptuous strings (both sustained and pizzicato) sit in perfect balance with the floor shaking bassline. While lesser men could have made this cocktail way too smooth, Cobby and Regan are raiders of the Black Ark, utilising plenty of dub FX to add a little bite. 'Til Everyman Is Free' sees Chieftain shift gear, switching to midtempo house with a solid drumtrack and driving bassline. Soulful vocals and warm keys turn up the heat before the killer house piano drop tears the roof off in an explosion of wide-eyed dancefloor euphoria. It's the perfect soundtrack for those sultry nights when you're still dancing as the sun comes up, and that's exactly where the polyrhythmic exuberance of 'Coati Mundi' comes into play. Alive with the ripple of playful percussion and the sunkissed sounds of steel drums, this Island groove throws out shapes and feelings long after the part timers have gone home, slinking around to languid synth lines and getting down to those funky Rhodes licks. With Chieftain taking care of the warm up, peak time and after party, you've just gotta remember to pack your dancing shoes. It's no surprise to most of you that I'm a big fan of this man's musicisms....for 20 years or so, his various offerings have helped soundtrack so many happenings in and around my every day to day.....so when something new pops out of the Sheddio in Kingston Upon Hull, I have a listen.....we're off again and this time it's the mighty Steve Cobby's new offering, 'Chieftain'....released on lovely 12" vinyl yesterday. Here, we have a pairing with Adam Regan, which works a charm.....ramped up, effects laden, sophisticated house music that refreshingly bumps out of the speakers. Soundscapes like this can fall foul of overworking the tracks with too many ideas, too many directions.....but like proper composers, everything sits pretty much perfectly.
