After 7 years spent in the italian underground experimental scene doing important live appereances (like the PRE 2009 festival with Current 93, Mouse On Mars), releasing various cd-r and tapes productions for labels like Bleak (in a compilation along-side with Coil, Attrition and Portion Control), Clan Destine and Cold Current, and fixing outstanding collaborations with names such as Thierry Müller (Ruth, Ilitch) and Mater Suspiria Vision, Mushy unveils finally her double sided synth-wave and kraut-psychedelic soul, being deeply influenced by the works of Cocteau Twins, Minimal Compact, Hope Sandoval, Grouper, Angels Of Light, Nico, Crime & The City Solution. Using the medium of Valentinaʼs musical expression, ʻFaded Heartʼ is able to produce soundscapes which open the listenerʼs doors to strangely nigthmarish illuminated “nocturnal sacrality”. The sound architecture reveals a charming world, made by the mixture of analog drum machines loops and an effect-processed bad off acoustic guitar found in a flea market with only 4 strings, burgeoning cold drones, tempestuous noises, spectral chants which rise at the surface. For the lo-fi atmospheres and the tales of lost loves, ʻFaded Heartʼ might be considered the italian answer to the magnificient Zola Jesus release ʻThe Spoilsʼ on Sacred Bones (NY). Home-recorded, ʻFaded Heartʼ was lately mixed and processed at Mannequin studio by Alessandro Adriani with a full analog setup. Valentina describes the album thus “The songs are a one-sided dialogue with my soul, a desperate and melanchonic psychedelia. The music is a repetitive and obsessive loop drum / synth / acoustic guitar pattern with an ethereal processed by effects voice on it. You can consider it as my personal second reading of blues music”. Apart music, Valentina is an architect and an highly regarded graphic designer for the italian label Mannequin. Her cover artworks were exposed in many art exhibitions around the world, such as Zumba & Goliath EXPO 2010, Australia. Janitor Of Lunacy were an Italian New Wave electronic band, active in Brescia from 1981 to 1986, composed by Kovre, Claudio Asserini and Gabriele Farina. With this line up, JOL produced a demo tape in 1983 entitled 'Crimes On The Dancefloor", which was very well reviewed by the italian music press. Thanks to such great feedbacks, the band was choosed for various compilation of the era, including VM, Komakino and Magnetique, playing many live shows in historic clubs like Xenon in Florence or Odissea 2001 in Milano, sharing the stage with Weimar Gesang and some others Supporti Fonografici related bands.In 1986 JOL entered in studio for recording their first full-lenght for this label, album publicized by various magazine but that never saw the light of the day, due to artistic divergences. The band broke up shortly after. Degada Saf - No Inzro (4:55) Mannequin continues its archeological mission bringing back to the modern format of the CD the cult italian new wave band Degada Saf, with their LP No Inzro from 1984. Degada Saf were a transgressive-dada-ist musical combo coming from Veneto. The project has seen the light back in the 80s thanks to the reunion of two charismatic experimental sound makers, Fausto Crocetta and Luigi Campalani (with additional sounds provided by Fabio Basso, Gianni Baggio and Stefano Dal Col). The music of Degada Saf suggests a peculiar mixture of post-modernism synthesised electro assaults, new wave’s imaginative minimalism and pop art aesthetic vision. The sound material of No Inzro makes constant interferences between rigorous avant-gardism, alternative music styles and colourfully plastic electro pop. The spectrum of musical imagination reveals a lot of good surprises, notably with the opening theme “La Rhumba de Shang Hai” which directly gives the tonality of the entire album: kitschy retro-popish ambiences based on dancing minimal hypno pulses and efficiently cold melodies. “Ris du Fles” is an intriguing-theatrical piece based on synth waves, absurd repetitive voices, surreal electro oscillations and skeletal e-guitar sequenze. “Tri-Banal” and “Loda Loda” are spaced out mechanical pop songs. Both songs admit obsessional abstract repetition, moody weird vocalizations, circular electro arpeggios and dissonant sound frequencies, in a way very similar to the experiments that Cabaret Voltaire were doing in the same period. “Zom Africa” is an instinctive pop-ish song, always bringing to the fore this massive, recognisable 80’s atmosphere. “Poli Su Mis”, “Om” and “No Inzro” deliver a convincing return to more dramatic, veiled electro-pop variations. Cynically and always in a jubilant provocative way it seems to open on a musical metaphor referring to negativity, conformity and anxiety within the consumer subject of late capitalism. A groovy and captivating electro experience. A pretty decent introduction to the band’s very own musical universe. Warmly recommended for those who are into minimal electro pop fantasies (Automat, New Order, Alphaville, late Kraftwerk...). The group was an integral part of the early electronic music scene in Australia and their releases have become a collector’s item in Europe, as they are mostly impossibile to find. The Metronomes first appeared in Melbourne in 1979, initial members were rock journo-synth player Al Webb, the bass player Andrew Picouleau (Secret Police, Sacred Cowboys) and the synth-pioneer Ash Wednesday, nowdays a live tour member of Einsturzende Neubauten. Al himself will admit later that Ash’s ingenuity in creating something out of very little was the key to the Metronomes sounding as ‘produced’ as they did. If their first 7’’ single “Saturday Night / Sunday Morning” came out in 1980, featuring a real metronome as rhythm section with instrumentals layered over, instead the second ‘A Circuit Like Me / Closed Circuit’ from 1980 is addice more to experimentation with drum machines, rhytm sections for both sides were recorded using a borrowed Roland CR 78. It was the first time in their compositions that a vocal had been used, courtesy of a lady called Talking Judy. The first full-lenght ‘Multiple Choice’ was recorded in the winter of 1980, using Roland Strings, a mini-Korg, some Arp synthesizers and a Boss Dr-55, a drum machine that was intensivly used by many minimal synth bands during the 80s and by legendary bands like Sisters of Mercy or New Order in their first songs. The second album ‘Regular Guys’, published in 1985, was recorded after a break in which all the members various lives and careers took left and right hand turns, surely more premeditated, as most of the songs arrived in studio already written. Each writer had creative contro lover their respective songs, a long-standing Metronomes road rule, only one track had what you might call a spontaneous birth. The LP featured the next wave of synth toys like the Oberheim synth, Oberheim drum machine and Prophet 5. Once the programming was set up, the instrument tracks were dumper via a PCM box direct to video tape, a pioneeristic process which almost entirely eliminated tape hiss. Formed in 1981, they were among the first in Italy to manipulate synths, drum machines and other electronic devices (as far as we know they were one of the few bands in the world able to program a Korg-KR55 drum machine) to create atmospheric soundscapes and they were considered the Italian answer to Tuxedomoon, who spawned a whole school in the Italian underground. After the first live appareances as opening act to bands like Spandau Ballet and Monochrome Set in their Italian tours, Central Unit published in March 1982, the 12’’ EP “Loving Machinery” with 4 tracks, including a cover of “What Use?” from Tuxedomoon. The EP first entered Belgian and German charts with the single "Saturday Nite", thanks to its skeletal electronic beats and minimal synth atmospheres, combined with mechanical basslines and relentless bass guitar meanderings, with slothy saxophone murmurs peeping out here and there. Catching the same spirit of such great labels, we asked to the italian synth wave princess Mushy to create a compilation starting from a tabula rasa. The mission was hard. Following her tastes and heart, she had to select a dozen of new bands from all over the world with unreleased and unique for this project tracks, picking up the title and realizing the graphic design and artwork. The full process of "The End Of Civilization" took almost 1 year but the result was touching us deep into our soul. Mushy began her career crafting noise bursts and aggressive oblique instrumentals before, in her newest form, blooming into a beautiful, epic and heart-heavy icy synth sound, having both "Faded Heart" (2011) and "Breathless" (2012) as album of the week at Rough Trade. The MONUMENTS came into being in January 1981 in Turin when Mauro Tavella (keyboards, programming) and Andrea Costa (keyboards, voice) pooled their artistic experiences. From the outset they produced exclusively synthesised music, following the natural evolution in electronic music from the early days with monophonic synthesisers to the latest virtual sounds generated with the aid of computers. The MONUMENTS released in 1984 their only official record on Discordie, a mini LP called "Age" comprising six incredibly fantastic electro-pop tracks, here reissued by Mannequin Records with 2 bonus tracks, "Veiled Lady" and "The Seals", which are out-takes from the same period. All the tracks were recorded on a Tascam 8-tracks, with external synchronisation of the percussions, at the TKS Studio in Torino. From 1987 onwards, they focused exclusively on music for theatre, radio and independent film, writing scores for the opening sequences of programmes for some of the most important Italian TV companies as well as soundtracks for documentaries. Anna Logue Records released "XXVII" CD in 2009, an anthology of their music that contains the best of their early work from the years 1981-84. Some critics thought of this mini LP as being the best electropop record ever coming out of Italy. On his own, he released the 7" "Close Your Eyes / Flower Into The Factory", produced and recorded at TKS Studio by the Monuments’ Mauro Tavella between 1982 and 1983 and subsequently released by Turin’s Shirak Records in 1984. When Politburo split in 1986, Tommy continued to experiment with various projects and sounds, including Thugs, Quiet (with members of Monuments and Deafear), Noxeda and Lacrimal, with whom he still plays today. Presented here are also 3 bonus demo tracks: a rare version of "Close Your Eyes", and 2 out-takes from 1983, "Vuh-Ya" and "Tuxedo Dance". The original graphic cover was realized by Bruno Zanichelli aka Pennarex, an underground artist from Turin, who died prematurely some years after. Deathday - After Dark (Legowelt Remix) (4:27) Deathday (formerly Deathday Party) is a Los Angeles based Experimental Post-punk band, formed in Santa Ana, California in 2008 by brothers Alex Guillén and Giovanni Guillén. Previous incarnations of the group can be traced back to Santa Ana's Koo's scene of the late 1990's. While the title-track is an unreleased one, instead "Dropped Into Obscurity" was already included in the Downwards compilation "Click Heels" alongside with Tropic Of Cancer, Silent Servant, The KVB. On the B side Mannequin asked to the synth-master Legowelt to remix After Dark". Seldom has the post-punk revival seemed as urgent as with Deathday, who match their guitar driven dirges with esoteric industrial soundscapes and tape manipulation. Their music is often as bleak as it is violent, with low end cacophony bludgeoning the listener into submission. Lyrically, Deathday often invoke the violent culture hidden beneath the media, as well as explore the crippling aftershocks of isolation and the mysticism of the occult. Comparisons, for those who prefer them, could easily be made to the likes of Throbbing Gristle and Suicide’s uncompromising attitude and primal infrastructure, but the band has equal roots in forgotten post-punk favorites such as Nagamatzu, Venus In Furs, and Joy of Life, creating a powerful hybrid exploring the darkest and most hypnotic corners of the spectrum. Known as Deathday Party until 2011, the band’s self-titled cassette, released in early 2012, exists as a cold snapshot of their formative material, while both “After Dark” and “Dropped Into Obscurity,” released on Mannequin’s The End of Civilaztion and Downward’s So Click Heels compilations respectively, offer a club-friendly alternative. While neither track compromises the band’s dark overtones, these tracks are ripe for the dance floor, having garnered heavy play in LA, New York, and Berlin especially. With a handful of releases on the horizon for 2013, including a split with Bestial Mouths, a vinyl reissue of their self-titled debut, and new material to follow, the future is looking uncharacteristically bright for Deathday. "The Project Phase 1 - The Temple of the 13th Tribe", released in 1984 (FACT 95) was produced in Manchester by Joy Divison and New Order bassist Peter Hook. Featuring the violinist John Neesham (of Walking Seeds and Mel-o-Tones) and the keyboard player Lita Hira from labelmates Stockholm Monsters, the album was done only after plenty of ups and downs in Keane's own life as well as numerous personnel shifts and incarnations, but the end results were a sometimes delicate and often enthralling combination. The combination of TR 808 and other drums, reverbed vocals, and aural mystery is all permeated by Keane's interest in the occult, while Hook's technological know-how adds a sharp rhythmic punch to tracks such as "Dark And Light", "Radio Egypt" and "Discipline". Originally released on vinyl in 1983 the EP became extremely difficult to find. Now, for the first time since 1983, Mannequin Records is giving it a new birth on wax, this time including a bonus track "Charentiesm" never appeared before in any format, which is the first track ever recorded by Information Society in 1982. As The band tell, in March of 1983, they took 5 of the songs they been performing live and recorded them at Blackberry Hill studio in Minneapolis, in a part of town affectionately known as “Dinkytown”. They had a huge plate reverb hanging in the basement. This time we are deeply honored to present the 1982-1983 demos tapes of Turin’s Monuments, who released in 1984 their only official mini-LP “Age”, comprising six incredibly fantastic electro-pop tracks, which was already reissued by Mannequin back in 2013. The Monuments came into being in January 1981 in Turin when Mauro Tavella (keyboards, programming) and Andrea Costa (keyboards, voice) pooled their artistic experiences. From the outset, they produced exclusively synthesized music, following the natural evolution in electronic music from the early days with monophonic synthesizers to the latest virtual sounds generated with the aid of computers. Most of the tracks have been composed between the summer and autumn of 1982 in their own private recording studio TKS in Turin. The Mutate tracks where created in 1990 when Steffe Sharpstrings Lewry, vocalist composer and producer from the UK, active since the mid 1970 (Gong, Planet Gong, Here & Now), was living with members of the Mutoid Waste Company. MWC were described as "part street theatre, part art show and part traveling circus" in the 1986 LWT documentary South of Watford presented by Hugh Laurie. The group became famous for building giant welded sculptures from waste materials and for customising broken down cars, as well as making large scale murals in the disused buildings where they held their parties. In 1989, after a number of police raids on their warehouse in King's Cross, they left the country and travelled to Germany where they became notorious for building giant sculptures out of old machinery and car parts, one of which was 'Käferman', a giant human figure with a Volkswagen Beetle for its chest, offering a Bird Of Peace sculpture that overlooked the Berlin Wall towards East Berlin and the regime of East Germany. They had a collection of scrap military vehicles, including a Russian MiG 21 fighter aircraft which 'followed' them around wherever they went, and a painted tank known as "the Pink Panzer". The only production of Caroline available is in fact her LP 'Now Wait For The Last Year' released in 1987 by Earthly Delights and eventually repressed by Klanggalerie / Blackest Ever Black Black. Presented in 4 different versions - Original, Dub, Instrumental and Edit - 'Dont Believe It's Over' was recorded in 1983 at Caroline's home studio in Brixton, 'Don't Believe It's Over' was taken during a pause from the main project Nocturnal Emissions. With the help of Beverley Ireland - a mysterious friend of Caroline, who nobody seems to know anything nowdays - on the vocals, Caroline used a full weapon gear made of Sequential Circuit Six Tracks and Drumtracks, Roland SH-101, Roland Tr-808, Powertran Vocoder, EMS Synthi, some Casio, all recorded on a Fostex 8 tracks reel-to-reel. Caroline and Beverley completed a full demo cassette and sent it around to few labels, and no one unfortunately got interest. Eventually Caroline suggested later Nigel to include 'Don't Believe It's Over' on the Nocturnal Emissions retrospective 'Duty Experiment' cassette, released on Soleilmoon Records in 1988.
