Within two years band became a desired guest for any youth club in Budapest area. Won Grand-prix of 1963 national song festival. Started as an instrumental band, playing almost everything from jazz and swing to latin music, and surely – beat and rock'n'roll. From the very beginning band found a lot of job on radio, TV and in movies. However, guys began to sing later as well to gain more popularity. 1971 saw the release of Bergendy's debut LP. Band adopted comic image (a.k.a. clown stage dresses, unusual haircuts, pantomime, etc.), but presented a rather serious and solid blend of jazz, pop and rock in finest traditions of Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Released a highly interesting (but obscure) album of cover versions of Western pop and rock standards in 1975, remembered mostly because of inclusion of a weird version of Deep Purple's 1969 smash ‘Black Night' with horns playing main riff. Enjoyed success with three more Hungarian albums in mid-70s. 80s saw Bergendy moving back to what they started with: jazz, swing and latin music. Eventually band turned into all-around entertaining 12-piece orchestra with four female backing singers who have their own spot of solo singing and choreography during stage shows. During the 40-year long career Bergendy not only remained among the most popular Hungarian bands. They played all across Europe in clubs and festivals, backed famous Hungarian singers (notably – Sarolta Zalatnay), 12 of their records were certified gold. Won the Award of Life-work in 2001.
