Kat Epple & Bob Stohl – Sanctus Spiritus
01. Flutist, synthesist, EWI-ist, composer, and digital orchestrator, Kat Epple, has released twenty-six music albums internationally, is an Emmy and Peabody Award winner, as well as a Grammy nominee. Original music compositions for television and film scores include: National Geographic, Nova, CNN, Carl Sagan, The Travel Channel, Turner Broadcasting System, Children's Programming, History Channel, The Guiding Light, PBS, Apple Computers, and NASA among others. Kat Epple has performed at The United Nations, National Gallery, Guggenheim Museums around the world, Museum of Modern Art, Hollywood Palace, for President Bill Clinton at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at "Ground Zero" memorial commemorations, with Symphony Orchestras as well as Contemporary Dance Companies. For twenty years, legendary visual artist, Robert Rauschenberg commissioned her to perform at his art openings internationally. Kat is also a founding member of the vintage electronic music ensemble, "Emerald Web", and records and performs with legendary Metal guitarist Devin Townsend and “Sonic Combine”. She collects indigenous flutes and instruments from various cultures, and often incorporates their unique sounds in her original compositions. Bob Stohl Keyboardist, Lyricon player, and flautist, Bob Stohl performed, recorded and co-composed music as one of the two musicians who comprised the band Emerald Web. He was renowned for his innovative synthesizer orchestrations and Lyricon playing. The Lyricon is an unusual hybrid synthesizer/woodwind instrument. Emerald Web was a band that recorded, performed in Planetariums, composed soundtracks such as for Carl Sagan, and concert toured around the US, from 1978-1989. They were known for creating a unique blend of "electronic space music" and acoustic instruments. The band consisted of Kat Epple and Bob Stohl who both composed and performed on keyboards, synthesizers, flutes, and Lyricon. Stohl passed away in 1989 at the age of 34. Extant in Florida from 1978 until Bob’s untimely passing in 1989 at the age of 34, the husband/wife duo were among the first to DIY blend synthesisers and acoustic instrumentation in a studio equipped with Arp 2600, Mini Moog, EML Synkey, Roland RS202 String Ensemble and Electro-Harmonix Vocoder (audio processor), plus a range of woodwind – both Kat and Bob were trained flautists, making colourful use of Bill Bernardi’s innovative Lyricon I, a hybrid flute/synthesiser – with some guitar assists here and there by friend and co-composer, Barry Cleveland.
As lovers and collaborators, the couple created a rich and vivid parallel dimension of new age music borne from the ‘70s prog scene and probably best referred to as “Space Music”. Throughout their unfortunately curtailed career the couple earned a noble crust creating music and mood-pieces for planetariums and nature programmes, most notably for the legendary Carl Sagan, under the Emerald Web aegis (expect to hear more of this on Finders Keepers later on this year) while continuing to issue numerous tapes to friends and fellow musicians. Following contact with Kat Epple – who still plays concerts at venues ranging from MoMA to Ground Zero – Dead-Cert were made privy to Kat and Bob’s private tapes circa 1980-1982, drawing for five pieces ranging from brooding deep space scapes to shimmering, gaseous sonics and impressionistic sound murals streaked with progressive traits and an alien, yet pastoral nature.
