SAM OBERNIK It’s hard to pin down Sam Obernik to one particular genre, one particular sound or indeed one particular scene. Whether it’s as the voice of the iconic house music moment ‘It Just Won’t Do’ ,or as her Jazz inspired alter ego Barefoot, Sam’s talents as a vocalist, musician and performer transcend a greater spectrum of music that might be first presumed. Her discography of collaborations includes some of the most highly regarded names in the electronic dance music; Tim Deluxe, Pete Tong, Paul Harris, Tomcraft and Alex Gaudino to name just a few. With an ability to adapt to different sounds and styles she’s often referred to as a bit of a chameleon, with more than one than one string to her bow. A constant variable throughout, however, is her distinctive vocal sound and the level of quality in all her projects. Enjoying sustained critical and commercial success over the course of her career, the demand for Obernik’s live performances is ever-present across the world, and with such an array of bona fide hits in her locker, moments of nostalgia are never far away. However, retrospective Sam is not, constantly working on new projects with a wide variety of collaborators, often taking a different, fresh direction to the previous one. Her desire to surprise and impress is stronger than ever and the fact she harbours a secret desire to make a record “based around dance values but moving right back to my darker self” gives you an idea of the inspiration that drives her. In an all-too-predictable time of brand-driven content, expect the un-expected from Sam Obernik. As the as lyrics to one of her song says, she just “wants to be the one you notice more. A BIOGRAPHY IN 7 PARTS #1. TAKE THOSE SHOES OFF “It was a name that came out of the blue,” Barefoot creator Sam Obernik explains one summer morning over coffee. “It wasn't really conceptualized. It’s more that as a girl, at three o’clock in the morning, all you want to do is get your shoes off. It just happened like that!” Barefoot (released September 26), her first proper band experience since her award-winning performances fronting ‘It Just Won’t Do’ and co-writing Tim Deluxe’s album ‘Little Ginger Club Kid’, is a personal project that aims to unite kids, clubbers, mums, dads and post-clubbers alike. #2. THE ACCIDENTAL CONCEPTION “I owe a lot to Tim,” smiles Sam. “While I was recording my solo album and promoting ‘It Just Won’t Do’, Underwater asked me to perform on Jo Whiley’s Live Lounge. So I rearranged the song, put some chords to it and turned it into a Cubano-type affair. It really worked and got repeat plays, which made me ask the question: how can I bridge the gap between my success in dance and what I love to do for me, which is writing my own songs with my guitar?” #3. A HAPPY BIRTH: NO COMPLICATIONS! Enter Tommy D, old skool producer (Bjork, Kylie, Neneh Cherry), DJ (Cream, Ministry, Sound Factory) and friend – and Barefoot was born. “The ideas began to flow over a bottle of wine,” says Sam, “not to mention some seriously hefty record collections. It really was as easy as that.” #4. WE ARE FAMILY But what is the basic concept behind Barefoot? Simple. It’s a chance for the world to hear their favourite club anthems re-arranged, re-interpreted and re-recorded for 2005. Everyone pitched in – “with plenty of background noise (if you listen carefully) from kids, dogs and home-studios, and Tommy’s ladywife Rosie played the strings,” laughs Sam. Without setting themselves a time limit – and under no pressure from a record company to “deliver” an album as it was a self-funded project – they could let the songs grow. So instead of turning the songs into acoustic laments, these new versions would sound perfect at Ronnie Scotts on a Wednesday night, with a whiskey chaser in one hand, and cigarette holder in the other. “We got together a wish list of dozens and dozens of tracks,” explains Sam. “Originally it was supposed to be all house music but a few others slipped in. Tommy & I started demo-ing this stuff acoustically, then recruited an old drummer friend, a bassist and keyboard player and went in to the studio for a couple of days, recording dozens of tracks live. There were no rehearsals, we just pressed record and hoped for the best! Then we picked the best ones. What you hear on the CD is live, apart from backing vocals, strings and brass.” #5. DON’T THEY GROW UP QUICKLY? From soulful house to hip hop standards, the point is that all these songs are club classics – they are grown up songs for a (now) grown up Ibizan crowd. You might not recognize them at first – often the melodies and chord changes have been re-written completely – but once the chorus starts to soar, you'll detect every one. Highlights include the unashamedly euphoric ‘It’s Like That’ (set for release October 05), a version so different from the original it defies categorization: “It was a late addition,” says Sam, “but we did it live and it just worked. Plus I like the fact that the lyrics say a lot in the current climate.” Other key tracks include the hauntingly elegiac ‘Hideaway’, a version so moving it nearly had Mike Pickering in tears when he first heard it; ‘Lazy’, which Sam explains set the precedent for the style of the whole album (“It was recorded at 3 in the morning after one too many”); and Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’, to which Sam added additional verses and choruses, completely overhauling the original track and winning Karl Hyde and Darren Emerson’s blessing at the same time. And let’s not forget Sam’s own 2002 Top 20 hit with Tim Deluxe, ‘It Just Won’t Do’. These are songs which have been turned on, tuned in and completely flipped over, physically and emotionally. #6. STANDING ON YOUR OWN TWO FEET “Playing live,” says Sam, “is definitely one of our strong points. In my opinion, if you can't do it live, you should be working out how you can.” And to illustrate this, the band is playing a few dates in Ibiza this summer, and of course their show will be hitting London Town soon. The message is definitely spreading. John Peel played ‘Born Slippy’ at a private dinner with Karl Hyde, whilst Pete Tong picked ‘White Lines’ for the soundtrack to critically acclaimed British film ‘It’s All Gone Pete Tong’. #7. SIX FEET UNDER? “We’re putting this out to prove a point,” say Sam and Tommy. “Not a point to sell, but to point out that these are great songs. Dance music is made up of great tunes – and it certainly isn’t dead like some people have been saying! So whatever fun you had out of your mind fifteen years ago, you can have even more now. We want to reconnect people emotionally with these songs.”
