I have assiduously studied music theory and the symphonic and chamber music repertoire, which is my first love.
I started fiddling with the keys of a piano as soon as I could reach them and whenever I could get away with it. I took guitar lessons at 10 and got very serious about it when I was 15. (I figured it would help me pick up girls.) I devoted about 12 years to the classical guitar repertoire before I'd had enough of so much work for no pay. Toward the end of my stint as a guitarist, I started playing around with synthesizers. Much more fun and much less work than guitar. I've had at least one synthesizer ever since then and in recent years have recorded over 62 hours of original music. I was exposed to a lot of great music as a child, mostly symphonic and chamber music, and that more than anything has been my greatest influence. I love the lush sonorities of an orchestra or chamber ensemble, and particularly the sound of a string section. I try to build music with such lush sonorities, and I think that I succeed fairly often. The way you do that is to let the music write itself. That's when great music happens.

It was on the latter where he posted a SoundCloud link to “Being Peace”. Here is what he had to say about it: I recorded this piece, "Being Peace" about 10 years ago, and I have never come close to its perfection since…. During that day that ended with Being Peace, I was for some reason unentangled with the result, which mental state I was able to sustain long enough to have a recording of what bliss sounds like to me by the end of the day. I would cry every time I listened to it for weeks. I instantly fell in love with the piece and asked daniel if I could release it on Conception. Now daniel has many times mentioned “Being Peace” as the pinnacle of his art and how nothing he’s done has ever come close. I, naturally, took him at his word.
Then he began to post more tracks to SoundCloud, intending them primarily as experiments, looking for feedback. With the post of each new “thing” (his own term for his pieces), I came to realize that here is a man who vastly underestimates the depth of his art. For me it finally reached a critical mass and I contacted daniel, telling him that unless he objected I would release these pieces. Luckily for all of us he consented. While these pieces may not be finally tuned and mastered as perfect works, I believe deeply in their beauty and the depth of feeling they convey. There is a deep well of emotions that daniel can tap into. While there is a sense of melancholy to be found, the ultimate sense I take from this music is a serene sense of being present to the current moment. Daniel has such a wonderfully nuanced sense of composition and a well developed ear for harmony. Those abilities are on display in this his second Free Floating release. I could attempt to wax prosaic and throw around a lot of superlatives here, but having just celebrated the 100th birthday of John Cage (as well as the 60th anniversary of his 4’33”), I feel inclined toward silence, and to allow the music (and the space between) to say what needs to be said…. I consider his music (breathing may surprise, tonalchemy and now gravity’s kiss) to be the prototypical examples of what I think Free Floating music is. Daniel’s music creates this aural space that is lush and deep, yet very simple and immediate at the same time. There is real depth to his knowledge of traditional musical structures, yet he is wise enough to let the pieces find their own way without too much of a heavy hand. He profoundly trusts the music and it shows in the pieces he creates. This collection came together when Daniel sent 4 DVDs full of music files to me, allowing me to listen and choose which tracks I wanted. Daniel has said of the tracks that I picked, “It seems like many of my works toward which you gravitate are ones that have much more of the music happening in spite of me as much as because of me.” It would seem, then, that I am in tune with that part of him that trusts the music and allows its gentle yet insistent pull to gently lead him a better and more beautiful place. I have given myself until thing_999 to come up with a new naming or numbering system. that is my goal. for now. i gravitate frequently to strings, my most inspiring instrument, and it often isn't complete until i've added horn, and sometimes flute, but not as solo instruments.

rather than obsess over new pieces as i usually do, i resolved to drop each piece as soon as it reached the point where i usually began almost endlessly fidgeting with it and move on to the next.
it was an amazing process, because all i had to do was keep the floodgates open and the music would come.
these pieces are ones about which i was uncertain at the time, but if you are a cause of music you know that your ear needs to be refreshed after being saturated.
i therefore left these to hear later and hoped to be pleasantly surprised. i was not at all disappointed to have found these objects among the rubble of my gradus ad parnassum. released September 24, 2014 i would like to give credit to George Ross, a teacher at Whitworth College, a mentor, and all around fun man.

one of the great things about dropping a piece and moving on to the next one instead of obsessing about the recent past (not exactly a good idea under any circumstances) is that you end up with lots of pieces that are relatively new to you. it's more enjoyable to me, that way.
that gives one more choices about what to include in a collection/album.

Except for the last piece, I think it failed rather miserably, though I may keep trying.
Orchestral instruments are by design distinctive sound sources, and only with the addition of audio effects can they be softened or mutated enough to the point where they don't demand attention.
At that point, they take on a different character, very much as if it were an electronically generated tone. released July 27, 2015

I started fiddling with the keys of a piano as soon as I could reach them and whenever I could get away with it. I took guitar lessons at 10 and got very serious about it when I was 15. (I figured it would help me pick up girls.) I devoted about 12 years to the classical guitar repertoire before I'd had enough of so much work for no pay.
