The Smell Of Incense - The Discography - 1994-2010
(Bob Moore): SMELL OF INCENSE are a Norwegian psych band with roots in the mid eighties and a long, sordid history that includes connections to such hardcore and obscure Scandinavian D.I.Y. acts as THE NEW INCREDIBLE HEADCLEANERS, FAMLENDE FORSØK, YM-STAMMEN, and DØVE MUNKER. Smell have existed as a fluid and sporadic lineup for years, issuing just three studio albums along a handful of singles and collaborations in since 1986. The band's debut album, the now out-of-print 'All Mimsy Were the Borogoves' consisted mostly of a number of little-known as well as irreverent covers, while their later releases focused more on original material blending pop, folk, trip-hop and heavy psych for a unique sound reflecting both the psychedelic traditional and experimentation present in much of modern Scandinavian progressive music. Smell's albums were all limited-release issues, and most are difficult or impossible to find today except from the occasional on-line reseller. 03:23:22 || (planetmellotron.com): Somewhere along the line, however, they started writing their own material, ending up with the compromise that is All Mimsy Were the Borogoves (Lewis Carroll's 'Jabberwocky', of course). Of the seven tracks on board, they ended up with three covers (The Kinks' Fancy, The Incredible String Band's Witch's Hat and a heavily customised version of Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive), plus another three where they put their music to someone else's lyrics (Faerie Emerald, from Edmund Spenser's 'Faerie Queen', Christopher's Journey from A.A.Milne's 'Winnie the Pooh' and a late-'60s Peter Hammill poem, Shrine, previously not set to music).
The band obviously refuse to use any equipment produced later than, say, 1972, with the end result being a marvellously 'authentic' late-'60s album. Well, nearly. Mellotron choirs didn't exist until 1972, but who's arguing when they sound this good? Their only wholly 'in-house' number, Alice, has some very background 'Tron strings, but the flute melody and strings on Faerie Emerald are right at the front of the mix, with background choirs. More choirs on Christopher's Journey and Shrine, although Interstellar Overdrive is more of a trippy organ jam, different enough from the original to justify the band's collective co-writing credit. Incidentally, the 'Tron (it seems they own one) was played by 'Han Solo', one of several nom-de-plumes used by the band, for reasons best known to themselves. August 2011 ----------------------- (psychedelic-music.net): 2nd full-length by our favourite outfit from the Southern coast of Norway. They shifted their musical direction forward to structures in the vein of early 70's progressive mellotronic space rock while still keeping their "traditional" psychedelic influences. On side 1 TSOI take us into a floral fairyland: a 25-min. long conceptual suite in 5 parts where the music ranges from meditative raga rock bliss with sitar to percussive trance rock elements to a meadow symphony and electronic interludes. Brilliant and breathtaking, richly instrumentated and melodic, spacy rock tracks with superb vocal harmonies and a progressive/folk feel throughout on side 2, tinged by influences of 60's "Beautiful Balloon" and Canterbury Scene. All lyrics by fantasy/romantic authors (Lord Dunsany, Mary Cicely Barker, Michael Moorcock etc.). Artwork by Gunhilde Langerud and Bumble B.

August 2011 ----------------------- (psychedelicfolk.com): I believe that Smell Of Incense have made with this album their best record to date. Their sound is very consistent and the arrangements are full and complete to the point of reaching "perfection", in that way the arrangements almost sound like they areg orchestrated. This gives a very completing feeling so that there are hardly are words left to say, because there are no strange aspects and the kind of contrasts left to notice to make some aspects stand out more. Smell Of Incense definitely is based in a neo-sixties flavoured, well arranged, psychpop style. With this they open up a fantasy-like world which is song based, and highly melodious and charming. The arrangements of the guitars are closely interwoven with mellotrons, flutes and percussions mostly, but also various other instruments (like mandolin, sitar, harpsichord,…) fill all the rest of the space for it completely. Just the last track I can lift out a small section with a spacerock psychedelica association somewhere, and another section with a faded out electronic music fantasy. Recommended.
Lyrics are based upon mostly fantasy/romantic authors like Mary Cicely Barker, William Blake, William Ernest Henley, Richard Watson Dixon, George McDonald, Henry W. Longfellow, Hydra Greece, Mervyn Peake, and Dr.Brt.Blaster. August 2011 ----------------------- (septembergurlsrecords.com): These miraculous psych-progsters hail from Arendal, Norway. TSOI weave a rich and colourful musical tapestry incorporating influences by Canterbury Scene, British folk rock of the 60ies & 70ies, US acid/West Coast rock and the "Beautiful Balloon" sounds of 60ies California. They embellish their sound with viola, sitar, mellotron. This compilation, covering the time between 1992 and 2007, contains songs from early singles, compilations, demos, alternative mixes & a previously unreleased prog rock track from the sessions for their 3rd album "Of Ullages and Dottles". Includes cover versions of United States of America, 50 Foot Hose, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Incredible String Band, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Folque, Merrell Fankhauser, and more. Lovely artwork by Gunhilde Langerud (who also did the cover of the other TSOI albums) and Bumble B.
