Проект Somatic Responses образовался в середине 90-х годов в Уэльсе, на территории Великобритании. Коллектив состоит из двух родных братьев - John и Paul Healy, проживающих в небольшом городке Ammanford. SR с самого начала были ориентированы на создание и выпуск ритм-н-нойза, музыки, состоящей из тяжелых сбитых индастриальных ритмов и сопровождающих их синтезаторных пассажей.
Можно сказать, что SR - это своего рода индастриальная машина, запущенная и мчащаяся на полной скорости куда-то за горизонт. Их композиции представляют собой огромные металлизированные специально утяжеленные шумовые ритмические конструкции, и изменения происходят только внутри двигающихся ржавых металлических гусениц, под которые попадает вся окружающая внешняя территория. Это музыка не для интеллекта, а для адреналина и настроения, такой индастриальный жесткий спорт, рассчитанный на любителей экстрима. Somatic Responses - это механизм, который можно остановить только одним путем - точным попаданием баллистической ракеты. Выпустив свою первую двойную компиляцию Technoir и альбом от SR - Circumflex, Hymen как лейбл сознательно встал на путь издания работ «проклятых» музыкантов. Но тем, кто идет против света, не стоит опасаться ночи. На сегодняшний день Hymen, и их основная база Ant-zen, уже превратились в своего рода монстров в музыкальном издательстве их оригинальные лимитированные дизайнерские выпуски сд, винила и прочей продукции известны и популярны по всему миру. Но в те далекие времена 1998-99 годов, когда все только начиналось, Somatic Responses пришли на молодой лейбл уже имея на своем счету несколько десятков виниловых релизов, изданных во многих странах - в Англии, Германии, США, Франции, Италии, Бельгии. Как уже говорилось выше, первым релизом на лейбле Hymen стал альбом от SR - Circumflex, параллельно в сентябре 99 года там же выходит виниловый 12’ сингл Revula, давно ставший артефактом в коллекциях электро-маньяков. Circumflex проложил первую просеку в техно-индастриальному лесу, сразу показав в полной мере характер коллектива, в дальнейшем сами музыканты только продолжали разрабатывать свою платформу и приобретать репутацию самого агрессивного электронного проекта в родном Уэльсе. Альбом Circumflex начинается с замечательного вступительного трека Umbrella, который уже на сороковой секунде срывается в опасную схватку ритмов, подходящей иллюстрацией к которой, наверное, явилась бы экстренная ситуация на какой-нибудь атомной электростанции. В последующих треках альбома все базируется только на экспериментах со скоростью и перегрузками. Единственной жемчужиной здесь является, пожалуй, неестественно красивая композиция Revula, спрятанная на диске предпоследней. В феврале 2001 года на Hymen стартует новый альбом коллектива Augmented Lines на этот раз Somatic Responses со второй попытки удается создать свой реально неповторимый шедевр, приблизиться к видению и пониманию своей музыки и своих траекторий движения. Альбом начинается с цепляющей солнечной композиции Rnb, которая отличным образом подготавливает слушателя к предстоящей поездке на вездеходе по катакомбам и бункерам заброшенной подземной станции. Следующий за ней Strangers in the night представляет собой уже начало пути, за сбитыми ритмами появляются мелодические синтезаторные линии, показывая отличное сочетание скорости и музыки. Третий трек Automata, впрочем, уже по одному названию можно легко представить себе, какая здесь будет музыка. Композиция Catacombs является визитной карточкой коллектива, в ней очень грамотно подобраны звуки жужжащих синтезаторных машин SR, с такой музыкой хорошо появляться на сцене и играть во время проходящего рэйва. Следующий альбом от Somatic Responses - Touching the void, появившийся в июне 2002 года не привнес в их музыку никаких особенных изменений. Это, на самом деле, является существенным плюсом и минусом этого коллектива. Бронебойная мощность в качестве внутреннего содержания - вот основа для их работы, именно здесь и начинается поле их деятельности, их родина. Тем, кому нравится творчество этого коллектива, безусловно понравится и этот релиз. Альбом «Касание пустоты» - отличное заимствованное название, более близкие и понятные треки здесь - Сarousel, Deadzone, Diode diaries. Однако, все это только закрепило успех самого бескомпромиссного и безжалостного коллектива в мире музыки и притянуло к нему десятки и сотни новых поклонников по всему земному шару. Популярность проекта продолжала расти и завоевывать все новые и новые пространства, в разных точках планеты продолжали издаваться их записи, было выпущено порядка 30 виниловых релизов, огромное количество треков от SR появилось на различных компиляциях, еще достаточно серьезную известность им принесла ремиксерская деятельность. В 2003 году на Component Records появляется их двойной альбом Adverts, наполненный до отказа сносящими крышу адскими треками, после чего в жизни коллектива наступило небольшое творческое затишье, периодически прерываемое очередными виниловыми выпусками. В феврале 2005 года на Hymen, после довольно большого перерыва, группа появляется с новым материалом. На выходе - альбом Pounded mass. Это одна из самых загадочных и экспериментальных работ проекта. К ритм-н-нойзу добавились еще некоторые направления современной экспериментальной электроники это элементы breakcore, hardcore, hip-hop культуры + скрэтчи на реальных вертушках. Смесь получилась соответствующая своему названию, казалось, что музыканты намеренно решили приблизиться и перейти границы разных культур. Опять же, можно посмотреть на названия новых треков альбома - Machines desire, Dead space, Approaching menace, Pounded mass. Угроза опасности приближается полным ходом, похоже, что музыканты просто стали рабами своей техногенной реальности, лязг металлических щупалец уже слышен не только в их студии, но и за ее пределами. Через год на уже несуществующем лейбле Sublight rec. появляется их новый альбом Giauzar, на Hymen же выходит 12’ виниловый сингл с таким же названием. Но это опять было всего лишь очередное приближение опасности. Гроза грянула с появлением на Hymen их нового релиза - альбома Digital Darkness в феврале 2008 года. Этот выпуск сейчас является своего рода релизом номер 1 в спектре шумовой жесткой музыки, верхушки, до которой коллектив добирался все эти долгие годы. Эта музыка, которую уже сложно назвать человеческой, может легко повредить уши неподготовленному слушателю, попавшему под обстрел скоростной артиллерии Somatic Responses. За последние 2 года парни проанализировали всю ситуацию, происходящую вокруг, и запустили свой setup заново, результатом чего и стал этот выпуск. Самый опасный коллектив на Hymen только подтвердил степень своей опасности - цифровая темнота, пожалуй, является концепцией, которой придерживаются и сами музыканты-роботы. Они окончательно перешли на темную сторону, но правда в том, что в этом мире, черное не всегда является черным, а белое не всегда белым. Catflap (4:40) Total length: 01:09:30 john and paul healy, collectively known throughout the world as somatic responses, are native residents of a small industrial mining community snugly located in the southwest region of wales. amongst the 20,000 inhabitants of the city of ammanford, a sometimes-overbearing intimacy exists, where everyone knows everyone else, and where traditional welsh lifestyle is still the common trend.this is all quite an interesting backdrop indeed, when considering it has been the environment in which the somatic responses have consistently produced some of the world's most abrasive and original electronic music for the past 8 years. as john healy states, "our lives are completely external to this environment and lifestyle... our sound has no deep connection to our surroundings. i think we care more about where we are mentally than where we are physically, with reference to our music." this contrast becomes immediately apparent upon hearing the somatics' actual material. while maintaining a consistent balance of the aggressive and the introspective over the years, their sounds have been shown to be extremely diverse. the somatic responses intend to push their own experimentation in electronic music further with every passing day. somatic responses are into dislocated & broken beats that still retain rhythm. another consistent theme in the somatics' music is their tendency to design, construct, and decimate complex structures of sound, while ranging the level of architecture from the most intricate manipulation to complete fluctuation of mood and theme. the sounds could be labeled as industrial with complex dislocated rhythms and associated structures filled with pure plasic and atari cookies. The Last Laugh (5:35) Total length: 01:14:31 for those rubberheads who consider somatic responses to be idm - thanks in part to their melodically brilliant 2002 album for hymen, touching the void - take heart: pounded mass stylistically name checks your idm and experimental electronic icons like aphex twin, squarepusher, and lee norris. somatic responses’ john healy and paul healy also have a message for these folks: rethink that tag. pounded mass is one acerbic noise assault after another, the kind that will make most fans of twee synth tunes soil themselves. “we've taken a harder stance for this lp, as the title suggests,” says john. “i think that we were categorized as idm for a bit, which we never really understood…so we've applied a few good measures of distortion, et cetera to this release. as far as concepts go, it's more of a ‘machines perceptive’ but with a very heavy dose of humor thrown in. there's much more of a mixed bag in this release, including some turntablism, pure ambient soundscapes, breakcore, hardcore, hip-hop.... and that's just in one song.” that one song, the tripadelic “bathrobe brawl v1,” infuses the psychotic scratching effervescence of dj spooky with breaks and bass worthy of a depth charge or dj shadow cut. one track later, on “go off,” the welsh brothers healy crank up the somatic responses style of electro-mechano ferocity that would otherwise plant pounded mass firmly in the realm of xanopticon or orphx. then there’s the aptly-titled “the day idm crawled up its own arse,” which john says is “a simple statement of what we think of the elitist and good old-fashioned cock-head idm producers.” despite their slight disquietude at being pigeon-holed into a myopic genre, one where artists often remain completely disconnected from their audiences, john and paul healy concede that the technoid themes they conjure up make their greatest impact when the listening environment is conducive to, well, listening. dancing, clubbing, and having a high time are fine for a casual night out, but the sounds of pounded mass demand your full attention - even at 140 db over a premier pa. “(o)ur music and music that we hear stimulates us on a level outside of ‘club land’ so mood, atmosphere and track progression are more important than repetitive beats and sequences,” says paul. “i think to us what a track develops from and into is important…each track is a kind of journey and the road should be interesting with cool landscapes and scenery, not straight and boring!” and hymen is here to assure you that none of those tracks - those journeys - on pounded mass will be straight or boring. Scorpio (4:04) Total length: 01:16:45 a new sign of life from wales - john and paul healy, well-known as somatic responses produced a new fulltime masterpiece of electronic sound wizzardry. almost two years have passed since giauzar and it seems the brothers used their time not only for the explorations of new tonal and atonal scapes, they also went for a re-analysis of their roots. the digital darkness described here is a dry, drawn out universe of distorted chromatic basses, straightened heavy beats and swirling filter pulses, establishing ties from the times when the tb-303 took over technoid music up to the nineties where speed increased and rhythms became dodgier. stylistic classifications were never somatic responses' aim, nevertheless, digital darkness might be rated as one of their most straight-lined works since years - f.e. you never heard s.r. as speedy as they are on the title track or 'reset the world'. their typical ingredients like unique strings usage are still present ('stranded'), the enrichment with some blasts from the past makes digital darkness a mixture which will kick your eardrums in. The magnitude of these elements became almost overwhelming to the point we thought we had to do something, bang the idea was born and quickly moved forward. We have been inundated with excellent music and the compilation could have been even bigger than the colossal 42 tracks included if we hadn’t turned it around so quickly, but we have to stop somewhere (and possibly do it all again in the future). After nearly 20 years in the electronic music scene there as always been constant bombardment of views. A lot is made of the current state of the music industry with illegal downloads, changing formats and people making music to satisfy a particular audience. Whilst a lot of these factors remain a talking point and in many ways a constant frustration the fact remains; There is a huge amount of great music in varying genres being made by people who do it because they have to, its what drives them! So looking forward in a positive sense, the social media revolution has meant continuing strong networks of like-minded people and enabled scenes and various forms of electronic music to continue (even if they don’t thrive as they once did). Also there is an assumption that the listeners just want the sugar coated well-produced junk they hear day to day, we don’t believe this. So here we are 20 years down the line with a similar ethos we started out with, exploration, experimentation, and escapism with the added bonus of meeting great people and forging great relationships along the way. Some great old friends and some new friends appear on here and it’s a privilege in many ways. Each track we (all artists) write, each record that gets pressed, each download (illegal/legal) each listener hearing something different for the first time, each soundcloud, facebook and twitter connection is an exchange of energy; A Photon Collision. It’s important that this compilation is a purely positive package. This wouldn’t have happened without the superb artists who gave music without question or contract, they just wanted to be a part of something, to create a Photon Collision of their own.
