Eiliff - The Discography / Дискография - 4 albums
(he Crack In The Cosmic Egg): One of the great, but little known, wonders of Krautrock, originating from Stuttgart in the late-1960's we believe. All the band had experience in other projects beforehand (i.e. their guitarist Houschäng Nejadepour played in early Kraftwerk), in the worlds of contemporary classical, jazz and rock. The name Eiliff is apparently from Hebrew meaning "I Live". As the "Eiliff Music Collective" they set-up base as communal group in Cologne, and they soon caught much critical attention, and a contract with Philips. On their two predominantly instrumental studio albums, Eiliff destroyed barriers between rock, jazz and established progressive genres, with lengthy intensive compositions that twist and turn with startling complexity, or riff with amazing power and stability. In their unique concoction songs were rarely used, and only then to counterpoint the instrumentals, and when necessary get over an idea that couldn't be achieved without words. Star of the show was the Persian rooted Houschäng Nejadepour, one of the hottest finger guitarists ever, closely followed by Rainer Brüninghaus' brilliant organ playing and the electric spiced saxophone of Herbert Kalveram. Eiliff just seemed to do everything right. They had the power of Mahavishnu Orchestra, the invention of Guru Guru, the diversity of Out Of Focus, and really they were purely excessive, with diverse elements blended together as only experienced in Krautrock. With excellent drums and firm bass they were able to weave the most inventive musical tapestries. EILIFF itself is remarkable as one of the most complexly instrumental of Krautrock albums, not least the 20 minute side-long "Suite", whereas GIRLRLS! came close, but was more condensed and added a touch of hard-rock and psychedelia. The single, which came out between the two LP's (apparently by the request of Phillips, who wanted something they could sell and get radio play with) is nothing like Eiliff on album, so beware! Eiliff live were nonetheless extraordinary, as the BREMEN recording proves without a doubt, showcasing the extraordinary "Suite" in an even more embellished form. One of their most prestigious moments, on WDR's "Nachtmusik" show 18 October 1972 is also documented on the CD release CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THEIR THIRD ONE, documenting three tracks from GIRLRLS (including vastly extended versions of "Girlrls" and "Hallimasch") and a new track. Interestingly, the notes in the CD booklet comment on the music press maligning Eiliff for being Soft Machine copyists. Whilst there's actually nothing wrong with being a Soft Machine copyist, I fail to see the comparison, as never did Soft Machine use such psychotic lyrics, fiery Kraut-riffing or sitar. No, Eiliff were not copyist at all. The Eiliff line-up remained constant throughout their recording history, until Rainer Brüninghaus was poached for Volker Kriegel's group (later joining up with Eberhard Weber's Colours before proliferating as an ECM Records session musician and then going solo). After that Bill Brown was replaced by Rich Schwab (who later went on to Brainstorm), and Houschäng Nejadepour went on to join Guru Guru, eventually leaving Eiliff in the hands of Detlev Landmann and replacement musicians until they eventually split up in the mid-1970's. 02:45:08 || (green-brain-krautrock.de): A Great German band who released this debut album in 1971. Defining the Krautrock sound via their sheer diversity Eliff had the power of the Mahvishnu Orchestra, the invention of Guru Guru and the diversity of Out Of Focus. Eiliff is one of the most complex Kraut rock albums of the era with intense instrumental interplay and great guitar work. English lyrics, high quality sound and some great music for lover.

This album is shorter and more condensed than their debut and perhaps harder and more psychedelic but it's still worthy of your attentions of the Canterbury styled progressive sound.

November 2010 ----------------------- (green-brain-krautrock.de): These top musicians would have really deserved the big breakthrough, but only Rainer Brьninghaus eventually made it. At the time, their two LPs were too sophisticated and progressive for the general public, and fans of progressive music found them too jazzy. This is why they could hardly please anybody and their very elaborate music did not find many listeners. It's good music, but you must get used to it. For experts only. Next to the totally unknown "Lilybaeum" - the stress is on "ae" -, this gig contains stage versions of three tracks from their second LP. As far as the recording quality is concerned, the same comments made with respect to the Gila CD apply. You'd better make up your own mind.

November 2010 ----------------------- (green-brain-krautrock.de): Eiliff, living together in a house in Cologne-Rath, did release two LPs and a 7" single. Elaborated works of art indeed, but too elaborated to be consumed by the masses. They are reminiscent of Soft Machine, but didn't work on that on purpose. Like the most jazz-rock bands they all performed highly professional. So Rainer Brьninghaus isn't the only one who knows what he is doing. Jazz-rock is a style of music which sounds kind of cold - too cold for some people. A fact that might be reinforced by absent vocals. On CD one can find Eiliff's gig from 4/19/1972 which took place at the underground bar Lila Eule (Lilac Owl) at Bernhardstraße. A bar which always was found in trouble with the cops and the authorities. The gig was recorded and broadcast by Radio Bremen. The master tapes were kept safe properly, and now given free for release.
