1. "Horizon Digital" was recorded and produced in Herouville (Normandie, France) at the Chateau d'Herouville between August and September 1978. Tracks 7 to 11 were recorded in Courbevoie (Hauts-De-Seine, France) at the Studio Michel JAUBERT in 1980. After two albums unanimously applauded both by the critics and the audience, EDITION SPECIAL is now deeply rooted as one of the leading bands of the European jazz-rock fusion scene. Guitarist Marius "MIMI" LORENZINI and his partner Ann BALLESTER (Keyboards & vocals) are at the peak of their creativity, when they start the recording of their third album called "Horizon Digital" (1978): Josquin TURENNE DES PRES has left the band after "Aliquante" (1977), in order to join MAGMA for a short time. He is replaced by Francois GRILLOT, whose references are Stanley CLARKE (RETURN TO FOREVER) and Jaco PASTORIUS (WEATHER REPORT). Another first class hiring is percussionist Mireille BAUER, who reinforces EDITION SPECIALE's female touch. Invited guest on "Angel's Egg" and "You", she finally becomes a full member of GONG in 1975, on "Shamal". Then, she leaves the band in 1978, plays with EDITION SPECIALE for the recording of "Horizon Digital" and then gets together with Catherine RIBEIRO + ALPES the following year. The recording sessions are held at the famous Chateau d'Herouville, famous thanks to JETHRO TULL under the name of «Chateau D'Isaster». No translation needed ! Nevertheless, apart from this anecdote, this studio located in Normandy is particularly famous for the quality of its equipment and technicians, and has hosted numerous renowned international bands (Elton JOHN, PINK FLOYD, CANNED HEAT...). Owned by soundtrack composer Michel MAGNE, then bought by Laurent THIBAULT, this studio sees a succession of bands from the Theleme Label, starting by MAGMA. Just to say that EDITION SPECIALE is there in ideal conditions and can then fully concentrate on the composing and arranging of its record. The result is made of six tracks in the same style as "Aliquante". The recipe is still the same: a great deal of jazz-rock fusion in the manner of WEATHER REPORT, a taste of pop (In English and French), a bit of soul, a touch of funk and a hint of Progressive Rock. And more than anything, a sense of truly unique melody and creativity. The five bonus tracks are the demo of a fourth album, recorded and mixed in only one day at Michel JAUBERT's studio in Courbevoie. Captured by an analogue 24-track two-inch tape recorder, this demo was made by Mimi LORENZINI and Ann BALLESTER with a new team of musicians. Among others, we can find keyboardist Thierry TAMAIN, who plays the Fender Rhodes and Clavinet. The musician, who will later play for Johnny HALLIDAY, RENAUD and Hubert-Felix THIEFAINE, also appears on a bonus-track included on Francois BREANT's "Voyeur Extra-Lucide" album. Bass player Emmanuel BINET now plays mainly with guitarist Pierre BENSUSAN, and is also a famous jazz musician. The drummer from Madagascar, Frank RAHOLISON (Former musician of Jef GILSON and funk band FOOKA MAINTY BAND), has also worked with Christian VANDER (MAGMA), with whom he recorded a drums duet in 1973 ("Fiesta In Drums"). And finally, Fernand "TITI" PENA, one of the pioneers of the French rock scene in the early Seventies with his line-up TAC BOUM SYSTEME, lays his vocals on the music. The concerts given during this period are as famous for the music played as for the artefacts used to spice up the show. For example, the band is introduced by a true extract of a news bulletin by Yves MOUROUSI, the familiar face every French people used to know on screen who, of course, announces «Edition speciale !» («Breaking news !»). The musical show then gets the assistance of various visual and stage artefacts. «On stage, the band is within an eight by three meters set that includes a screen on which videos are projected, which don't represent the traditional use of a film at all. Indeed, director Yves ROLLIN has got together with the musical team, and his particularity is that he creates his films according to the rhythm pulses of the band's music.» Ann BALLESTER remembers an anecdote: « Our sound engineer Patrice CRAMER (Known since for his studio works and his contribution to the musical show "Taratata") had to replace our drummer at the last minute, during one of those evenings that are nothing but trouble. A vehicle had left us somewhere around Le Mans, and we had got to Paris with a great deal of problems for a concert the following day. A the first kick on the drums during the first tune, Patrice CRAMER actually literally crashed through the drums ! . No doubt the consequences of such a short notice replacement... Ann BALLESTER says «The shows of EDITION SPECIALE were ambitious in the sense that we already wanted to develop some sort of pluriartistic crossing, by blending visuals to our music. Indeed, there were three slide projectors on stage, and later two more for Super-8 films. Mimi LORENZINI, Yves ROLLIN, Philippe RONCE & Fernando VIAMONTE were among the photographs' authors, and I was the one who had made the films. This meant, a six-ton lorry on the road, with the equipment and technical team, plus a bus with the musicians. All this cost around 5000 Francs !». Faced with those enormous expenses (For the time) as well as with a colossal phone bill, it soon became essential to get back to a more modest scale ! Of course, those were not the main reasons that led to the break up of EDITION SPECIALE, but it became more reasonable to concentrate on a duet with Mimi LORENZINI and Ann BALLESTER... "Horizon Digital" will remain as the last and probably the best opus by EDITION SPECIALE. The fourth studio album will unfortunately never be officially released, no doubt stuck in the middle of the storm of musical changes that took place in the early Eighties. The band split up soon afterwards. This doesn't prevent the musicians to gather still for common projects: Ann BALLESTER and Mimi LORENZINI got together on Mimi LORENZINl's album "Orchestra V", one of the very first CDs issued by Musea in 1988. This reissue is the first occasion to listen to these five excellent compositions, definitely representative of the style developed by EDITION SPECIALE.
