Armed with a sensitivity and sense of occasion that few DJs possess Bill Brewster knows how to work a crowd in the best possible sense. Originally a chef, a football pundit (co-editor of fanzine When Saturday Comes) and record collector, Bill began DJing in in the late 80s, but he cut his teeth playing ‘Low Life’ warehouse parties in Harlem and the East Village – he moved to NYC to run DMC’s US operation – and anyone hearing Bill today can see how these New York ‘roots’ shine through. For eclecticism, surprises, amazing unique music and sheer long-haul dedication to the dancefloor, Bill’s your man. His other life is as a writer. Together with long-term pal Frank Broughton, Bill is author of the definitive history of DJing, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, and has contributed his acid Grimsby wit and encyclopaedic knowledge of music to just about every dance rag there is, not to mention The Guardian, Independent and Mail On Sunday. The Brewster-Broughton double act unveiled their latest hit in 2002 with the uniquely sardonic DJ manual How To DJ (Properly). They have recently completed an updated version of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life that will be published in June, along with a double CD from Universal. He’s an industry insider, having brought Twisted records to the UK and launched his own highly successful deep house label Forensic. In his spare time he is often found in the studio, either with Fat Camp partner, Theo Noble, re-editing old disco, funk and rock records; or producing original music. After Dark is New York at 4am, with the lights off and the strobes flaring. It’s a Dalston basement with slow chugging basslines propelling a dancefloor. It’s a starlit night on the coast of Croatia with glittery girls and burnished boys grooving to 110bpm anthems. So what is our After Dark, exactly? It’s great dance music with the Bosh-O-Meter turned to 0. If you want a drop, break or explosion every 16 bars, then Swedish House Mafia is that way. This is music for dancers who know to move. It’s slow release carbs, with a startlingly high pleasure count. Groove is in the art. We’re on a dedicated mission to unearth the unreleased, the impossible-to-find and the darn-right-funkiest music this side of the Dardanelles. Take this little gem in your palm right now. We’ve got previously unreleased mixes of the Doves and Twin Sister, a pair of new tunes by Tad Wily and Beans & Company, plus the rare-as-hen’s-teeth mega disco tune ‘Love The Way You Love Me’ by Marti Caine. There are some other killers, too: A super funky Philip Zdar mix of ‘Machistador’ by –M–, while I:Cube delivers a terrific reworking of Karma’s ‘Beach Towel’. An obscure and timeless DJ led journey - welcome back to ‘After Dark: Nightshift’. Once again Bill Brewster comes armed with a sensitivity and sense of occasion that few other DJs possess. Delivering another batch of slow cooked musical stews, making sure the tempo stays nice and steady and the emphasis is on funk, soul, grits and corn fried chicken, Brewster has done so much digging, Late Night Tales had to hire a forklift truck and tractor. Among the unreleased nuggets, there’s the Fernando mix of The Detachments; inordinate excitement about Gino Fontaine, a tune spotted a year ago but has languished in Andy Meecham’s Stafford catacombs ever since. A nocturne is a French term to describe a musical composition that is inspired by or evocative of the night, which seems apposite. The most famous modern nocturne is, of course, ‘Harlem Nocturne’, as recorded by countless jazz musicians. If you like, you can just call it the night. The point is it’s when the fairies come out to play and the bass is at its loudest (the two are not necessarily related). We’re back in the low-tempo, high-octane zone. Our tempo might be slow, but the quality control makes Louis Vuitton look like Poundland. We’ve gathered together some of the hottest new material, with some judiciously chosen old gear, an edit or two and blended them together like a disco nutri-bullet.
