A New Rob Dougan Album adamwilcox.org
May 09, 2015 In 1995 Australian composer Rob Dougan released a track called Clubbed to Death. I guarantee you’ve heard Clubbed to Death. The track has turned up in everything; Britain’s Got Talent, X Factor, Top Gear, Law & Order, GTA… it’s used in the Matrix when Neo and Morpheus are in the Woman in the red dress program. You’ve heard Clubbed to Death. Dougan released the album Furious Angels in 2002. Furious Angels is my favourite album of all time. When I ripped all my music and sold my CDs years ago, Furious Angels is the only one I kept. The album is a blend of orchestral strings and trip hop beats. A classical-electronica mix, the album was unlike anything else I’d heard. Released as a double CD, Rob’s Tom Wait’s-esque gravely vocal tracks comprised the first disk, with a second of instrumental versions. The weird mix of angelic choirs, vast sweeping strings, thumping beats and rasping, broken vocals of a dying soul. I can’t tell you how much I love Furious Angels. I first heard it aged 17, and despite almost everything I liked when I was 17 having fallen by the wayside- I still adore Furious Angels. So, I waited for a second album. For 13 years I have patiently waited for a second album. Rob meanwhile bought a wine vineyard. In about 2009 A short film appeared online for jewellery designer Solange Azagury-Partridge, with brand new music by Rob Dougan. Maybe a new album was around the corner? (It wasn’t). Michael McGarrity ran the unofficial-semi-official Rob Dougan fan site for years. I emailed Michael in 2011 asking if he had any news, given we were approaching the ten-year anniversary of Furious Angels. Michael said that he was sure there would be a second album, but he had no news really. “Last time I met Rob back in 2005 he had a tonne of work on the album already complete and it was sounding big.” Much as I wanted to believe Michael, I’d spent years on the forum of his site, with a few other diehards searching for any possible hint of another album on the horizon, but to no avail. Furious Angels 2 became something I assumed would never happen. I pretty much decided that when I finally got round to writing that film script, I’d try and lure Rob out of retirement to score the film. I figured that would be the only way I’d get any more music from him. In November 2013 Rob in what can only be trollin’ mode posted a picture on Twitter saying “FTR: Still live in London and still write music. Just haven’t released anything.” Then, much to my surprise, just before Christmas last year- Rob posted a picture on Twitter replying to Michael, showing Air Lyndhurst Studios, set up for 120 orchestra & choir. And then today, almost by accident, I noticed Rob had changed his Twitter icon. That was the hint he’d released a new EP. A brand new EP, The 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Sessions From the notes included in the album; This EP contains some of the first recordings I’ve made for the last 10 years… Over that period I have been writing and conjuring up a full length release to follow the last. And these recordings were made for that. They are released as orchestral sessions here, as I’ve released orchestral and instrumental versions alongside a full release in the past and wanted to do this, this time, before a full release… I’d hope another EP such as this could be released in some months time and the recording process continued. I can’t tell you know epically excited I am about the prospect of more music from Rob Dougan in the near future.
