There is no way of accurately estimating the vast audience that grew up with, and on, the Bluebird label. With bands such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Earl Hines, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnet, Erskine Hawkins, Count Basie and Woody Herman on board, it was no wonder that jazz fans enlarged and enriched their collections with as many Bluebirds as they could carry home from the local record shop. A pile of 78s could get pretty heavy but it was always worth its weight in musical gold. Most people played them so many times that often replacements would have to be purchased. But at 350 a pop for two sides of music (or three for 990 Cherokee, Tuxedo Junction and In The Mood were a bargain even the second time around.
In the time of the 45 and the LP, vital jazz continued to flow with Dizzy Gillespie, J.J. Johnson, George Russell, Gil Evans, Art Blakey, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims and Gary Burton.
Now BMG Music is making available great jazz from all of its fabled periods. Some of the first masters represented include Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond and Sonny Rollins, in a reasonably priced series that is the 1990s equivalent of those earlier, treasured Bluebirds. The difference is that these don't wear out. The music is forever and so are the discs.
