The music here was recorded in Los Angeles in 1957 with what was then Joe Darensbourg's current band. He led the band for several years and they made a couple of albums for Lark Records with the same personnel as here. These recordings however seemed to suffer somewhat from being done in the confines of a studio and the band never sounded so relaxed and freewheeling as it does in these live performances from George Sanders' Lark Club. On this CD the bandsmen are able to stretch out and give the audience plenty of what they were famous for; being one of the best "down home" bands outside of the Crescent City. Aside for Joe's own playing, this music features the playing of the other two New Orleanians, trumpeter Mike Delay and bassist Al Morgan. Delay was a tall, trim man who loved music and loved to talk about it. He had played music in New Orleans for many years before going to California. His wife Olivet was one of the dancers at The Gypsy Tea Room and Mike worked with most of New Orleans' finest at one time or another. He was a happy man and loved to talk about the old days. He had a habit of putting the back of his hand across his mouth when talking to you as if concealing some of the secrets of the CIA. Here he blows like five thousand, hurdling bar lines and generating a great swing. Al Morgan, one of the three brothers of the legendary Sam Morgan, out of Bertrandville, Louisiana, was born in 1908 and was a veteran of bands such as Fate Marable's and Lee Collins'. He recorded the famous Jones-Collins Astoria Hot Eight sides for Victor in 1929 and left New Orleans a few months later. For years he was with Cab Calloway's Orchestra, finally settling in Los Angeles where he lived out the rest of his life with his wife Sally. He played with the Dixie Flyers until Joe Darensbourg left to join Louis Armstrong and then went the L.A. night club circuit with pianist Buddy Banks. He was possessed of a pheonominal drive on the bass violin up until the time he died and yet, as demonstrated on track #2 here, could play with extreme delicacy wit the bow. Warren Smith played trombone with the original Bob Crosby Bobcats and was as robust a tailgate player as you would ever need. He played with Pete Daily's band for many years. Pianist Harvey Brooks was a fine pianist who had long stints with Ory and the Young Men Of New Orleans at Disneyland. He was also quite a composer and wrote the hit song, "A Little Bird Told Me." Drummer George Vann played the Los Angeles night club scene for many years before and after his stint with the Flyers. A note should be made of the vocalist on track #5, Richard Kenner. He was a local celebrity who had appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey shows. What can be said of the bandleader Joe Darensbourg? He was one of the happiest of jazz musicians. Having studied clarinet with New Orleans veteran Alphonse Picou, he went on to play with Medicine Shows, Carnivals and became Kid Ory's regular clarinet man for years. He held the Dixie Flyers together until he answered a call from Joe Glaser offering him the job with Louis' All Stars. Joe loved to play music, to cook and especially to tell stories. He excelled in the latter department as demonstrated here in the last track, talking with his teacher Picou. I included these little snips of dialogue because I fell it is good to hear the voices of the two jazzmen. It is another small piece of history that would otherwise be lost. Barry Martyn 1997
