Two long form pieces for half-remembered journeys across post-industrial Yorkshire. On first impression it appears to be a journey through a uniform landscape, past familiar mills, peaks and dales. Until you start to notice the details. The devil’s in the details. It occupies your peripheral vision. It leaves you questioning how you arrived where you did. How did we get here? It almost certainly started in Düsseldorf or Köln. Or possibly The San Francisco Tape Music Centre. It’s not important. The journey to Yorkshire is somewhat hazy. Hansa by the Wall, 1977. Stockholm’s Museum Of Modern Art, 1968. Maida Vale, 1963. Rugby, 1986. It enters Yorkshire via Kingston-upon-Hull. Although, even that isn’t set in stone. It’s not important. It’s important to ask the question every now and then. The answers less so. Banks of vintage equipment. A master craftsman at work in a nest of patch cables within an old textile mill. The tracks appear at their own pace. They gestate between recording sessions for other artists. There are guests on ‘Tenter Ground’. The single take drums deserve a special mention: a study in restraint and execution. ‘Eller Ghyll’ is perhaps a better signpost. From humble beginnings: a trickle into a mighty torrent. How did we get here? Жанр: Electronic

The journey picks up where Netherfield Works left off. We’re still in no rush to reach our destination. If anything, we’re travelling more slowly than before. For this late night drive through the Yorkshire moors, the Farfisa drone is a constant companion over another two long form pieces. The mist never clears to reveal the scale of the scenery. There are brief glimpses. Patience is rewarded. Where have we been since the last time? The UFO Club, 1966. Runcorn via Stockholm a few years later. Progress. But at what cost? The Scottish Borders have been mentioned. The landscape is reminiscent of home. Rolling hills. Long hot summers. The smell of dusty 1/4" tape. Fairfield Halls, 1970. It’s all a little hazy. Ask a question, but don’t be surprised to get a question back in reply. When was the last time you listened without distraction? Do you remember how it feels to lose yourself completely? Each tiny variation becomes seismic. A lost cause? Perhaps. Progress. But at what cost? Жанр: Electronic

We’ve picked up speed since we passed Netherfield and Springhead Works. It’s more built up here, as we enter the outskirts of the city. The former mills and cinemas are alive. A kick drum carries though the walls. Every so often the doors open and the sound spills onto the street. The destination was unintentional. An experiment. Who plotted this course? As ever, it isn’t always what you expected, but the journey is key. Detroit via The Orbit in Morley, 1992. Istanbul, 1967. We travelled by rail with old friends. Vienna, late night café, straight connection. Lower Manhattan, 1966. New Year’s Day in Filey, making mental note of the patterns played out by the church bells. 1991. Revisited several times over. Mutated by the passage of time. Those memories that stay with us and influence our decisions many years later. Taking time to make new ones. Do you always need to travel with a purpose? Could you follow your instincts from time to time? A trilogy complete. The end of a journey? Жанр: Electronic

It follows three EPs: Netherfield Works, Springhead Works and Nunroyd Works. Real-time journeys across decades and continents, and swathes of post-industrial northern Britain. The journey on Erratics & Unconformities picks up where Netherfield Works left off. We take the canal towpath out of the city. We fork north shortly afterwards. Is this where it started? The terrain gradually becomes more rugged. Familiar. Wild. Evidence of human activity is less immediate in this glacial landscape. It’s there if you seek it. But easy to ignore. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the weight of the ice-sheet carving its way through the rock. Scepter Studios, Manhattan. September 1967. Vox amplifiers driven to within an inch of their lives. An insistent rhythm. Familiar. Wild. We head across the city to 30th Street Studios a year later. More refined. Capturing a moment four years after its inception. We call into Command Studios in London on an evening in March 1972 before the pace drops. A moment to take in our surroundings. Music born in New York that has travelled beyond our solar system. A sense of weightlessness. We go as far back as 1906. Central Park. Tone poems underappreciated at the time - a visionary. We pay a visit to the village of Wümme in northern Germany. Forward momentum. There’s a nod to the rhythm of the loom. The studio building echoes with its own history by way of an early 70s Elka drum machine. We come to Van Gelder Studio in 1962 by a process of addition and elimination. We stay for the next three years. We’re also put in mind of the time we spent at Dierks Studios in 1972. A treasured record bought at sixteen. It takes time to reveal itself completely. Perhaps it never does. It would be lost now. 8th January 2013 – 19:16 – Farfisa drone through diode filter and phaser – 26 mins 38 seconds Everything in its own time. The output from the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home is no longer as linear as it once was. There was no clear start point for the project, rather simply rediscovering the joy in experimentation with no material goals. Some of the recordings that make up Erratics & Unconformities go back almost seven years. Tracks have come and gone in that time. They don’t leave until they’ve undertaken a stringent quality control process. It started slowly, but has picked up momentum in the last eighteen months. Recorded and re-recorded to the correct level of imperfection, and then left to breathe. Mixed and re-mixed. Carefully compiled when the time was right. 3rd July 2019 – 12:34 – Mixdown The journey is just as important as the destination. Жанр: Electronic

Ravelands Brow (Live Works) ...... 18:19 foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Live Works is a collection of the live tracks previously released for Bandcamp Fridays, now fully mastered at Calyx and with revised artwork.
New for 2022: A limited edition double 12" including the previously unreleased 'Ravelands Brow'. One-off pressing of 1,000. Live Works is Craven Faults’ first foray into live performance. Recorded and filmed during lockdown in the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home, this acts as proof of concept. Proof that these shadowy analogue journeys can translate live. Proof that a fixed start point, and set of rough coordinates, is all that’s required. The destination is never the same. We start north of the Leeds-Liverpool canal. We attempt to retrace our steps. The map gets us so far, until the scenery is no longer familiar. It’s not clear when we diverged from our original course, but the views are spectacular. Sheer cliffs. Ominous skies. The air is close. We go further back. The very beginning; Düsseldorf, Köln and The San Francisco Tape Music Centre. There’s been plenty of water under the bridge since then. The journey is significantly longer. The river is in full flood, and we follow it all the way to the sea this time. And then we’re back in the room, and the studio building once again echoes to the rhythm of the loom, recreated by 1970s drum machine technology. The working day is lost in ascending patterns. The evening sees us break new ground to the north-west. The sun is low in the sky but the heat remains. Dale after dale until there are no more to cross. Hazy. Familiar, yet different. Euphoric almost. Жанр: Electronic

These 37 minutes of music are the start of the next journey. New terrain and more refined methods of travel. Dark clouds gathering.
We’re out of the blocks quickly. German engineering carries us swiftly across the moors on a Saturday night rendezvous. Two almost identical mushroom shaped rocks are the destination. There’s evidence of previous rituals carried out. We’ll let the numbers do the talking. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 Two hours due north we go in search of the power source. Cascading. An experiment in performance over a fixed point. Tape loops recorded in 1967 at The Philadelphia College of Art. Woodwind purchased from a charity shop in Yeadon. The concept of work was forgotten. We’re back on the millstone grit of the Mid Craven Fault for an exercise in simplification. Familiar territory. Sometimes the theory isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and there’s still power in hammering a single note over two chords – a lesson learnt from the American South in the late 40s and early 50s and boiled down in the late 60s. Olympic Sound Studios, April 1967. The Hit Factory, April 1969. On Erratics & Unconformities, Craven Faults often found a calm inner space in the vistas. Here the tensions of the early EPs return, with a focus on how human ‘progress’ has impacted and shaped the landscape. How the land was divided now shapes our present and future, and retracing that journey is particularly pertinent. Жанр: Electronic

It follows a trilogy of long sold out EPs, 2020’s Erratics & Unconformities LP, the Enclosures mini-album and a series of studio performances entitled Live Works.
Meticulously curated, each release moves the Craven Faults story forward. Each one a self-contained analogue electronic journey across northern Britain, viewed through the lens of a century in popular music. Studios, venues and movements. Technology and ingenuity. Vibrations. Lines drawn to connect those moments of inspiration. On Standers, there’s a sonic shift. A new palette to paint from and further refinement of the craft. We’re no longer exclusively travelling overland. Familiar landscapes are viewed from a different perspective. There’s a growing obsession in how this island came to look the way it does, and how its ancient and modern history affects its current population. Landscapes shaped by the elements, and then by countless conquerors and settlers. Livestock and machinery. Money, religion and politics. We begin at the boundary. The highest point. On a clear day you can see all the way to the east coast. The heavy industry that’s grown up around the mouth of the river, stands out in this ancient landscape. We’ve seen it change. Subtle shifts to the untrained eye, but with seismic consequences. With all this laid out in front of you, it’s impossible not to be moved. We’ve been stood here for 800 years, so it takes a little time to build up momentum. It’s heavy work. The unanswered question once again echoes through the air. Originally composed in 1908, revised in the 1930s, but not performed until 1946. We head due west a short way. From the viaduct you can see the scenery changes. Softer lines where the sandstone gave less resistance to the rivers of ice. An experiment. We float downstream from here. 1966. There’s no place like home. We ascend through the clouds and we’re travelling above the weather. A moment of calm. The scars of early industry are visible where the clouds break. Where a thousand strong pairs of hands and ingenious engineering methods once removed tonnes of lead from the ground, it now lays silent. Open to the elements. Nature is doing its best to cover our tracks. You have to know where to look. Fours and threes. The scenery changes with the weather. Château d'Hérouville, 1976. An hour or so north we happen upon a rich seam. Fiercely disputed. A scandal. Untold riches on one side. Bankruptcy and imprisonment on the other. A case study in how the land was divided, and how this legacy has been passed down through generations. History repeats. Bell Labs, 1974 – 1976 and the memory of an LP bought in 1980 but not revisited in years. Retracing our route, sometimes a borrowed piano is inspiration enough. It’s walked the same paths in a different life. Eloquent and graceful. Many left their mark here, and an obscure Roman goddess protects these waters. We wind our way east for the home leg. The Norse influence is evident here. It’s in the dialect and the place names. It’s in the movement of livestock for seasonal grazing. United Western Recorders 1970 and Britannia Row 1982 via the city on the other side of the Pennines. An approximation of the human voice - a fitting end. Жанр: Electronic

Following loosely in the footsteps of 2020’s Enclosures release, here’s another 37-minute journey through Northern England via a lifetime obsessing at the fringes of popular culture. New details and perspectives. Dusk gathering.
There’s some discussion over where this journey begins. Certainly, less than twenty miles north-west of the city, but possibly much closer. Ironic given we’re searching for a distance marker. A gritstone pillar is the prime candidate - destroyed by lightning almost 200 years ago, and then rebuilt a quarter of a mile away. A curiosity. Many a journey starts here these days, as we take flight and head further north and west. The tarn was drained in 1940 to protect critical infrastructure. We leave the sounds of heavy industry behind us to float weightlessly over the moors. We pick up pace and hit those levels of repetition engineered to the highest standards in Düsseldorf and Köln, 1971. A gift to the world. At this point the altitude is no longer clear; there’s no sense of scale. We could be a matter of inches from the ground, but the patterns are the same. Eventually we arrive at a hillside with no defined boundaries. The limestone pavement is visible in parts, and snaps us into focus once again. It’s a little way east for our next stop, very close to where the journey began on Standers. Documents from 1651 suggest an arbitrary drawing of boundaries, the distribution of power and wealth set down in pen and ink and then passed down through generations. We beat a path around the perimeter. The divides still exist although the crab apple tree is long gone. Melodies give way to bent notes and dissonance. We take a circuitous trip to Hamburg and Rome for filming between February 11 and April 23, 1972. A slower pace. Less structure, but emotive, evolving. The master touch, indeed. One final job before retiring and living off the land for the next 373 years. Для того, чтобы скачать .torrent Вам необходимо зарегистрироваться |
