October 2020 REM GENRE Jazz-Funk foobar2000 2.0 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Donald Byrd and 125th St., N.Y.C. was recorded in L.A., like most of his records, in spite of the allusion to uptown Manhattan. It was recorded in the summer of '79, when after three or four years of unforeseeable success, Disco was just passing its peak, and rapidly so. "Disco Demolition Night" had happened just weeks before these sessions, and everybody in the recording business, especially those who profited from the disco boom, had probably not yet quite grasped the impact of that nasty event.
Anyway, Donald Byrd was still in a dance mood when he and his 125th St., N.Y.C. team were recording. The opener, Pretty Baby, sounds so, well, innocent in the above-mentioned context. Byrd obviously thought it was the summer of sing-a-long and a mere la la la would lead that song and that album into the charts. Pretty Baby is one of the weakest tracks on this set. For whatever reason, this album has been neglected even by diehard fans of Donald Byrd. It's not fair. Sure, Donald Byrd and 125th St., N.Y.C. can't compete with any of Byrd's releases between '71 and '76. But Side One does contain nice moments, especially when Byrd plays his trumpet (and he plays a lot), and Side Two is entertaining throughout. The band is great. Ronnie Garrett provides lots of fun with his funky bass. Wade Marcus delivers nice arrangements, which are made even more effective, paradoxically, by being placed in the back of the mix (a remarkable effect!). And Clare Fischer steals the show on his own composition, Morning: His solo is a Fender-Rhodes e-piano heaven, and the song itself is a Jazz-Funk gem and the highlight of this release.
