US based ASC has just released his debut LP on Nonplus Records entitled “Nothing Is Certain” and he now feels the time is right to launch his own label showcasing his unique sound.ASC has always been involved with the more experimental end of Drum & Bass having released music on such influential labels as Offshore and Warm Communications inspired by the works of 808 State, Art Of Noise, The Prodigy, Blame, Odyssey, Future Sound Of London, Slowdive, Monolake, Polar & Autechre.Starting out with what has to be one of the most eagerly awaited tracks this year, The Touch finally sees a release. ASC - Autoreceptor (4:35) Following up from the ground breaking genre-defying first 12”, in this second release from Auxiliary, ASC offers up four tracks hand-picked from a selection crafted during the development of his Nothing Is Certain LP on NonPlus+. Four tracks which couldn’t be included on the album due to space constraints find a perfect home on Auxiliary as part of the aptly titled Certainties EP. Up first we have Reality Check, immediately showing an impressive hand of skillfully constructed loops, interjected with metallic stabs over a constant, numbing bass. Developing atmospheres is one of ASC’s key strengths and this track does not disappoint, with a sound that effortlessly evokes the more melancholic brand of sci-fi movie. “Everything around me became suddenly unreal” we hear a voice say; fitting for such an engulfing piece of music. Spectrum provides an alternative feel with a less intense, more electro-inspired motif which handles the trademark minimal Autonomic sound so confidently that ASC virtually ignores the need for that “beat” we might usually expect to hear. Kicks, hats and FX constantly overlap each other, quietly providing an immaculate structure you won’t even notice unfolding. Blips and pops take center stage on Metronomic, a remarkably unique composition chock-full of videogame-style snippets and noises which on their own may have appeared unusable to most but in ASC’s hands somehow come across strikingly well in the mix, ebbing and flowing at an appropriately mechanical pace. Finally, Autoreceptor delves back into that classic atmospheric, Blade Runner-esque sound-set ASC’s listeners keep coming back for. A succession of earthy kick drums from the outset somehow resist the temptation to take over proceedings and instead lead us on a calming journey punctuated by thoughtful strings and synths, with a sparsely-used vocal sample to die for. The emphasis is purely on analog synth sequences and drum machines. Cryogenic opens proceedings, with a heavy kick drum, backed with a weighty bass for maximum effect. Monomachine arpeggios are the order of the day here and are used to devastating effect. Following on is the laid back synth swells of Erosion Of Time, which leads into the more pronounced hits of Anthe, which tops off side A with a heavier crescendo. Meridian starts off the flip side in melancholic fashion, with it's half-time beats and pads that pluck at the heart strings. Tribalistic submerged electronics vaguely reminding of techno, dub techno, all with a grey area time signature to unify the theme. Part 1 starts out with dubbed percussive elements and a sense of urgency, before Part 2 strips back all of that sense and slows it down to a dissolving soundscape of subtle tones and white noise, which bass stabs reinforce the backbone. Part 3 picks it up once again, before switching up tempos to introduce a forlorn cold melody to surround you. On the flip side, Part 4 steps up the murky percussion to another level, while a sense of dread is filtered with distortion. Part 5 serves as a linking tunnel to more percussive bleakness for the tape's finale. Part 6 steps up the urgency once again with its clattering conga hits and scattered bongo patterns, before it all comes to an end with messages seemingly trying to burst through the ether of white noise. Auxiliary started life purely as an outlet for ASC's music at the back end of the Autonomic movement. Since then, it's been through a number of changes, taking in a lot of different styles along the way, including Autonomic, drum & bass, ambient, downtempo, techno, Grey Area, and music that can only be defined as experimental in nature. Emotion In Rhythm collects 8 tracks spread over 2 pieces of vinyl. Proceedings open with ASC's 'Honed Edge', a slice of cinematic Grey Area, with his trademark ethereal soundscapes. New signing Sciama takes up the mantle with the impressive brooding ominous tones of 'Foreque', before master of the void, Sam KDC, takes things up a notch with the impressively destructive 'Gordian Knot'. Up next is a new collaborative project by ASC & Semblance. For those of you who don't know, Semblance is Will Swann, who has helped run the label since 2014. 'Simulacra' is a hypnotic moody synth workout, which brings plate one to a close. Plate two opens with another two collaborations by ASC & Sam KDC. First up is 'The Inevitable'. A seriously dark menacing slower groove that features clever rhythmic work the pair are known for since the invention of their Grey Area project. Following that, the pair don their Saturne guise for the heavyweight acidic 'Hypnosis'. An atypical Grey Area techno track that would have been right at home on 2017's 'Trace Elements' EP. ASC's 'Penrose Stairs' then takes it down a notch with it's mysterious melody and crashing sparse industrial percussion. Connections can be made to the anonymous Grey Area series of vinyl released between 2015-2017. This leads perfectly into the compilation closer by Synth Sense. Sadly, Synth Sense no longer produce music together, but their legacy on Auxiliary is such that we felt it was only right to include an unreleased gem from the Ashford pair in 'Broken Sword'. All of the hallmark SS techniques feature in a dark sci-fi narrative that puts a full stop at the end of the first ten years of the label. Upon discovering the contents, I found a group of tracks that I had totally forgot about, so it almost felt like hearing them for the first time. Clear Skies was due to be released on vinyl around 2007 (I think?), but for reasons I cannot recall, it never happened. Instantly, the thought of putting this out on vinyl came to me and here we are. I felt that out of this specific batch of tracks, Nimbus was the one that complimented Clear Skies the most, which is also a nice dichotomy between having a clear sky and having one full of nimbus clouds. This marks the fourth white label release for the series, and something that might open the way for more releases in a similar vein. - ASC released December 13, 2019
