This proved to be a profound awakening for him. He suddenly began hearing a sort of music rising up within himself almost like resonant strings vibrating. The music though extraordinarily different than anything he'd heard before sounded strangely familiar. It seemed too far out of reach at the time as synths were very, very expensive then… So he bought a classical guitar and began studying Classical, Ragtime, Jazz and Folk music... later playing bass and guitar in a Rock band but always dreaming of recreating that sound he heard in his head from synthesizers. In the mid eighties he bought his first few synths, then added multitracking and from that point on sold his guitars and never looked back. He has continued to release albums in the classic European Electronic style ever since bringing his own unique touch to the genre. He was a founding member of the band Dweller at the Threshold and has also released several solo works and collaborations with artists such as Steve Roach, , Craig Padilla, Rudy Adrian, Nemesis, Ron Boots and Otso Pakarinen.-         Особая благодарность: Abrams_65, Klorus X, startide, dma_b-Solo

February 2020 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Paul Ellis‘ Appears to Vanish album from 2000, is a great introduction to his music. It starts out very much in the vein of a Berlin School excursion, but doesn’t take long to branch out into much more than simply just that. Paul is a unique artist and pioneer, and is not one who lets himself get bogged down in already well trodden paths. No,with Paul you have to be in somewhat of the holiday spirit, and be prepared to try something a little more exotic and new. Paul may start out this album as if it were to be a full on retro fest,but this is merely the launch pad for him to take you to new and exciting places you will have never been before.
The best way to enjoy this album is to sit back and place yourself in Paul’s safe hands, and simply enjoy the ride. In this mindset you will be open to fully experience the splendour of what is on offer here. During this album, Paul swerves off the beaten track and then delights you with a tour of lands and places you never new existed. The music never stays in one place for too long, and you’ll be introduced to more and more interesting sights and experiences as the journey progresses. All you have to do is be a little attentive, and be open to these new experiences so that you don’t miss out on all the wonderful things that will pass before you. You will be so absorbed by this 70 minute tour, that you won’t believe by the end of it that you were travelling for that long, and will be left still wanting more. Well fortunately, there is plenty more where that came from when you’re ready for it, as Paul has many more trips lined up for you. All you have to do is book. 2006. Common references do surface. Ellis, a remarkably talented synth programmer, gives us the silky smooth pads and authoritative, commanding e-rhythms associated with good spacemusic. The emotional side of the music comes out too, in the album's insightful harmonic selection and progressions. But Ellis is involved in music to make something new every time and the album's sound design and energy come from a different place than that of his peers. So, if not purely as an experiment in sound, why then does this album exist?
Into The Liquid Unknown seems less about streaking through interstellar space, supernatural revelation or reactualizing mythic events than it is about the light of human reason. Ellis looks to music for that which he cannot find in himself. As you listen to any of the pieces on this album, you are in the midst of a thought process as Ellis attempts to bring the order of the cosmos to the chaos of life. Into The Liquid Unknown was created through the intertwining of technology, aesthetic and individual quality. From the Berlin school-orientated music he created with the band Dweller at the Threshold and on his early solo works, he switched to an impressive mixture between Berlin school, ambient and lots of own inventions.
On “Silent Conversations” there is an important place for the genius of ambient Steve Roach, who contributes on four of the nine tracks. This can be heard on the excellent opening track with the great title “the only known photograph of God” and “Peripheral Vision”. Ellis is a master of sequences. Tracks like “Trillium”, “The wind-up synthesizers of the Glass Reich”, “Continental Drift” and “Dialing in the Sun” show some of the best sequencer lines ever. All these sequencer forces are, so to say, being put to rest in a bed of fantastic ambient sounds. And then there are also the slightly experimental “Trance Figure” on which Paul plays guitar, bass and a Rhodes electric piano and the atmospheric title track with the intriguing vocals of Alison O’connor. Ellis is a master of electronic music, as is Pablo Magne a master of cover designs. These two elements together have resulted in an album that can now already be regarded as a classic. This is the result of “The Infinity Room”. This fast growing power in electronic music switched from a Berlin School-orientated style with the band Dweller At The Threshold and on his early solo works, to an impressive mixture between Berlin School, ambient and lots of own inventions on his albums.
His last album “Silent Conversations” was no less than sensational; on “The Infinity Room” he does it again. As said, all tracks clock exactly ten minutes. It starts in “Tick Tock” with a softly thrusting piece of music in which at the end slowly the sound of the Big Ben in London is played. Paul’s music clearly shows traces of the well-known names in electronic music but has so much own input that can be stated that he has a certain style of his own. “Forever Endeavour”, for instance starts dark and evolves into a great sequencer track. Again, kind of quiet and slow. The quietness is also present in another sequencer piece, the excellent “Flesh And Blood”. After the brilliant ambient piece, with Mellotron flutes, Paul hits the sequencers again cleverly in “MirrororriM”. This man is capable of something. This music is powerful, professional and very beautiful. And the cover by Pablo Magne is also great again. I wanted to make an enveloping space to create a quiet atmosphere for my home. It took me a long time to decide to share it because it was so different than what I usually write. I noticed that I was playing it all the time. It put me in a blissful mood. It had no point to prove and didn't hurry to get anywhere, it just unfolded at its own pace. There are no loops... I played it all the way through, improvising in the key of C# minor. It actually took quite a few takes to get it the way I wanted it... I had to keep telling myself to play more slowly. Now Then ...... 46:03 Now Then is an album that I thought I had completely lost. I had started work on the foundations of these tracks when my computer died. And though I usually do this right away I hadn't backed up the files. So I built a new recording PC and moved on from there, thinking I would never recover that album and began recording my next one, Moth In Flames. A few months back I was looking in a hard drive and was surprised to find a subfolder that had mixes of the pieces I thought I had lost and discovered that they were mixed well enough I could continue adding to them and finally finish it. There was a period when I took a break from writing spacemusic, but enough time had passed that when I found these tracks I realized that finishing them would be the perfect way to shift gears back into writing electronic music. I added a few new parts and segued all the tracks together to form one long 46-minute piece, classic style. I wanted a sound that blended precision and clear cut lines with the more impressionistic progressive and psychedelic approach to spacemusic. [pre]-----------------------

I am a fan of happy accidents and organic music forms, so I put a little extra effort into letting the music grow on its own with this album. I knew from early on I wanted this album to be one long journey (78 minutes, here), because those long musical journeys are what intrigued me about spacemusic in the first place. Though I know this does not make life easy for the DJ (apologies) I tried to let it spend more time in darker and more mysterious places. I think that kind of looseness of playing and being open to letting the music go where I didn't expect it to is what humanized the sound. This was an experience that was so common to me that I assumed everyone also heard this sustained, evolving sound, but I was quickly disabused of this notion that it was common when I tried to explain it to anyone. Later in my teenage years I bumped into a few early electronic music albums that seemed to reflect and generate that feeling I had and the inner music I used to hear. This led to my fascination with synthesizers and how, with them, I could create an environment and explore a kind of music that was inherently free on all levels: the form of the music, the timbre and tone. It was the freedom that really got me hooked, with the ability to paint my own sound worlds.
With Panoramas I am injecting a certain amount of chaos into the compositional process to emulate the randomness in what you hear when you're in the middle of a forest. I would deeply listen and realize that every bird, insect, wind, or water sound would happen with their own independent rhythms and melodies yet somehow this chaos did not really produce any discord. So for Panoramas, I took random musical expressions a step further than I had before, I laid down several initial tracks and as each one was added I muted all the other tracks so I could only hear what I was recording at that moment. So, it forced me to pay attention to each individual sound during its creation which made each sound arise in its own unique way. Next, I would layer another set of music and textures over the top while listening to the earlier tracks, which made part of the music conscious and reacting to the other sounds. I spent a long time working on these environments to get the balance between chaos and order right. This is my transmission of the inner sound of the Pacific Northwest. Silver Star In Winter Monochrome being the first one. Strangely enough about 9 months later I wound up buying a house in the Silver Star Mountain range, which I had no idea was going to happen when I started this. It was simply one of my favorite places to hike. I came home after a particularly good day inspired to write a long form piece about how it made me feel. Now it's home.
Trillium Lake and the Blue Reflection. I remember coming back from there and I could hear how I wanted the intro to sound before beginning to write it. Not the specific melodies, but the textures: Rhodes piano sound surrounded by pads. That's what the scenes I was looking at "sounded like" in my head. It took a spontaneous life of it's own and it was as if I was watching it objectively as I created it. Like someone else was writing it and I was just listening to it unfold. I felt strongly enough about these two pieces that I kept creating more. I noticed that I never got tired of listening to them. They put me in a good mood. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I like to speculate how my music could have evolved if things had gone a different way. With this album I thought about what if progressive electronic music loomed larger on the musical landscape? I love and have mostly been focused on larger scale abstract electronic sound worlds, but I have always loved well crafted, more song based forms, too. Vangelis, early Private Music releases (Patrick O'Hearn and Eddie Johnson, especially.) William Orbit, Air and many others move me in the best way. So I became inspired to create this album, which in some cases are earlier pieces radically remixed as well as some new pieces specifically written for this album. What if that early Private Music label had become as popular and influential as Motown? There are some tracks here with 5/4 or 7/4 time looping over 4/4 drum patterns. Lots of unexpected chord changes, unique rhythmic textures. And I tried to find ways of making melodies shine in-between odd, shifting patterns. Bacharach meets Progressive Electronic? Год издания альбома A Guitar Has Moonlight in It на Deezer указан не верно. Вариант 2017 года имеет другой порядок треков (первый и последний треки переставлены местами). На QoBuz, Deezer и прочих сервисах перепутаны Panoramas 2 с Panoramas 3. В раздачу не включен сборник The Waves Are Listening (упомянут на Discogs), т.к. он является копией Six Of One - Paul Ellis Vol. 2 и Vol. 3. Альбом Wrapped In Silence представлен в двух версиях : нынешняя с Bandcamp и более старая однотрековая (мастеринг отличается).
