Although he had recorded two earlier solo albums, it was on 1985′s Traces that Erik Wøllo found his signature sound. “Traces is a very special album to me,” explains Wollo. “I felt I really got into something new and I have explored these ideas on several albums since.” Featuring expansive synth textures, hypnotic sequencer patterns, electric guitars and guitar-synthesizers, Traces was Norway’s first electronic music release. “In 1984-85, MIDI technology was new and groundbreaking,” Erik recalls, “and I was one of the first to explore all the new possibilities. Silver Beach is Erik’s most rhythmic album consisting of fifteen intense and stunning tracks from his early career. At the time, Electronic music was still in its early stages, and the MIDI revolution had just started to influence the way artists made music.
The original Silver Beach album (tracks 1-8) was released on vinyl on the Norwegian label Cicada Records in 1986. In 1988 the album was released on CD (also Cicada) and included the additional and very rhythmical tracks “Little Big Tune” and “Mountain Train.” The album was re-released on CD on the Spanish label Margen Records in 2005, remastered and fine-tuned with 5 additional previously unreleased tracks from the same era. “Silver Beach is my fourth album and represented a new direction in my career. More rhythmic sequenced and groove oriented than what I previously had done, this is my rock album! Originally, most of this music was composed when I was living in a very small flat in the center of Oslo, Norway. I remember I had the studio in a corner of the living room. Like Traces (my second album from 1985), all music was electronic and made using the latest MIDI technology at that time. Everything was composed and recorded on the now vintage Roland MSQ700, and all the diverse synths and rack modules were mixed directly down to 2 track analog tape (no multitrack tape was used). “When I remastered the album I tried to keep the spirit of the originals. Yet at the same time I wanted to add certain details to make it more complete. All my albums represents a certain chapter in my life. In many ways the music reflects how to live in a particular time. Different musical styles come and go, but I have always tried to find my own way. “Silver Beach has not been available for some time. But this album does seem to refuse to die! The result is synthetic walkabout music, an album of simple yet vibrant sophistication, perfect for wandering around or sitting contemplating imaginary beautiful vistas with eyes closed. These seventeen stunning tracks create a sense of ceaseless motion without arrival, the pleasure of traveling without destination: walking on an outer limits beach. The music was by Erik Wøllo, and especially together with Knut Bry's pictures, the result was exciting. The book about Fossegrimen consisted of a number of excellent color images of water in different contexts, a mood that Wøllo also tried to bring out in the music you could hear on the subsequent CD you found in the book. The CD's playing time is just under 30 minutes, and would turn out to be the last CD Erik Wøllo released on Origo Sound under his own name.
The album begins with water flowing in powerful Prelude, characterized by scary synth sounds. Jutulane has clear elements from Norwegian folk music, it is rhythmic and fascinating, but unfortunately too short. Kreftene is pure sound design, while Sylvbandet shows Wøllo from a very original side. Here there is a choir that sings a melancholic melody, but Wøllo's unmistakable sound still shines through. The Real Thing is again rhythmic, and I almost get the feeling that it is the 80's band Propaganda that has appeared in the soundscape. It lacks an exciting melody but still has progress. Kjelda is almost meditative and contains a sample from Vangelis' 1492 music before the theme from Sylvbandet returns in an electronic session; very pleasant and melancholic. Cut no. 7 Vekselsongen consists of sound effects and rasping fiddles, before the typical Wøllo composition Elektrovikla Dråpar enters the speakers. A fascinating melody line shows the composer at his best here. The last cut Vasshjulet fades out with a water cascade and a long concluding tone. Commercially, the Fossegrimen project was not a great success. Artistically, it was still an exciting experiment, and in many ways the perfect project for Origo Sound, a company that has always had a reputation for releasing visual music. On Fossegrimen you did not have to form your own pictures - you could just flip through the book ... Time will tell if there is room for something similar in the upcoming Origo story. Layers of acoustic guitar loops and pulsation-patterns create the foundation on which Wøllo’s distinct melodic piano themes are played. As a natural and important counterpoint to the expressive piano themes, Wøllo’s electric guitar ebow solos are both intense and haunting. “I started most of these songs with just an acoustic guitar,” Wøllo reflects, “composing and recording them in the same order you hear on the album. I have always been interested in timelines and schemes that show how time can be measured, and how we relate to them. And how our experiences and memories – as well as present circumstance – affect our hearing of the music. Built around catchy and accessible melodies and rhythms, Blue Radiance‘s eleven new compositions feature sophisticated and engaging waves of Wøllo’s trademark processed electric guitar, occasional acoustic guitars, synthesizers and percussion. Erik says, “I wanted to do it differently this time: longer pieces, open and extended, spreading out the sonic elements and transitions in time. I aimed to combine everything into a continuous and balanced aural flow, together with my ethereal tones and timbres. Last year I worked exclusively on this album. I composed a lot of material; there were over 40 tracks to choose from and to really express the variety, a 2-CD release was clearly what I had in mind.“ Different Spaces is electronic music with an evocative and symbolic approach. Erik’s background in 70s progressive rock shines through. The sequencer aesthetic and other aspects of the era’s technology form the basic foundation on many of these tracks. Modern pulsing and immersive soundscapes provide measured momentum to steadily move through the morphing patterns and textures. “If music or art does not send me to a certain spot or a setting, I am not very interested,” Erik comments. “It’s a sense of being somewhere. Threshold is defined as a magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested. Wøllo says, “For me, Threshold Point is a musical idea of an actual transformation: to cross a threshold, going from one form to another… into a change. Unfolding over time, gradually bridging and leading into new states or places. In my music, patterns and evolution are basic elements, always retaining an emotional connection with the melodies and the textures.” These ideas are reflected in the beautiful cover image created by artist Rodrigo Adolfo: approaching new spaces that are symbolically represented by a bridge with gateways, leading into a shimmering distant light. Wøllo offers a calm, otherworldly and self-contained sound on Threshold Point. This release possesses a quieter nature then his previous Different Spaces album; it’s somewhat more reserved and withdrawn. “Some of these pieces were written in 2016 under special and tragic circumstances. I was staying in Brooklyn for some weeks while my sister grew more ill and died. I recorded in a tiny room at her neighbor’s apartment on Henry Street. I sense these circumstances influenced the music, making it more ethereal and humble than some of my other works. Where Different Spaces was a bit of a memorial to her, these pieces were composed earlier during the midst of the crisis.” A reflection on changing states, passing a threshold, evolving into something new, this is a musical expression where the melody and the accompaniment merge to create an equilibrium of sound, as if watching something stopped in a camera frame. “Andrei Tarkovsky once said film is a mosaic of time,” Wøllo reflects. “I found that to be a very inspiring metaphor for creating this album. Music also operates with this concept, developing a duration in the literal sense. INFINITE MOMENTS is an hour of ambient electronic music from veteran Norwegian composer Erik Wøllo. Across nearly four decades, 40 albums encompass Erik’s unique mix of layered synthesizers, melodic guitars and expansive percussion. This time he takes a different approach — there are no synthesizers! The album is performed entirely on electric guitars processed with the diffused sustain of the EBow and layered note structures of harmonizers. No rhythms, only long, vast and engaging soundscapes. Minimal, extended and infinite in its essence, the album is a meditative inward journey of stillness and reflection — an emotional mapping of the mind, beautifully weightless and contemplative. These six long, luminous and timeless moments are built upon multiple independent guitar loops of various length, overlapping and merging into slow drifting sections of continuously evolving combinations. Each loop was recorded live in the studio using a different type of guitar creating rich ensembles of unity. Comprised of 10 previously unreleased tracks, Sources was originally recorded surrounding the album sessions that spun Dreams Of Pyramids (1984), Traces (1985), and Silver Beach (1986). This was the start of a very fruitful and inspired period for Wøllo, thanks to modernized technology like MIDI and inspiration from music from all over the globe. “There was lots of new equipment coming out during these years, and this reflects the music I made at the time.” Wøllo says. “There was also a lot of great electronic music released. I was inspired by artists like Hassell, Eno and Budd. Also a big influence was Klaus Schulze after seeing him at the legendary Oslo club, Club 7 in 1984.” The spacey sounds on Sources show a clear line of cosmic excursions between Wøllo’s early releases to modern day fellow Norwegian travelers Lindstrøm, Bjørn Torske, and Prins Thomas. Sources remained untouched, transferred from tapes that Wøllo had made years ago, before Helge Sten (Deathprod) mastered the material in his Audio Virus Lab. The collection was mostly created with a Roland MSQ 700 sequencer, in real time with several MIDI synths/modules recorded directly to either a 2-track stereo recorder or 4-track Tascam Portastudio. “I am very happy that the album feels like one whole. I do not often look back, and I rarely listen to my own releases after they are released,” says Wøllo. “Sometimes I get positively surprised discovering new aspects of my older material. This is music made on impulse and with an eagerness to create, and not so much a big thought about releasing the material. The North Star has been important to humans for thousands of years, not just because it is a bright, easily identifiable guiding light to orient yourself, but its fixed position in the sky helped people measure their progress as they traveled on great journeys. Erik writes: The North Star has always fascinated me, both as a natural phenomenon and as a symbol for cosmic eternity. As children we always looked for this star, and with the angle towards the horizon we could find the north direction. As a musical metaphor to me, compositions that are both celestial and stellar express a timeless and permanent state of mind when the world changes around you. It represents limitless possibilities and infinite wonder with sparks of imagination from which dreams are formed. Similar in creative style to my 2019 release INFINITE MOMENTS the music is based upon multiple layers of sustained Ebow guitars. However, the sound took a totally new expansive and evolved trajectory with melodic elements, rhythmic arpeggio loops and some percussion added to the treated guitar ensembles. The mood from the early Ebows are still there pointing and setting the emotional direction: vast and spacious, minimalistic and sparse in character. I also included some ambient nature sounds to place the music into a more scenic environment. «NORTH STAR» is an inward journey of stillness and reflection. Music that shifts between contemplation and intimacy, impulse and reflection. I aimed to create a cohesive album with each track adding to a unified whole, yet retaining separate character that stands on its own. It is more like a sequence of photos of a journey in an album rather than chapters in a book. The music turns each moment of listening into something more vivid than is possible in any earthly spell of time. Always with a slow and calm pace. Music has always been very important in people’s lives. Over the last 15 months I have received more emails than usual from my listeners, thanking me for helping make the world a little bit of a better place for them. With «NORTH STAR» I hope to continue giving music lovers some more inspiration for their lives. Art can expand and give the mind a broader horizon. Simultaneously, there is the quite personal psychological time that shapes our life and memories; it’s how we perceive the progress of our consciousness. Within both, time remains an abstract term with no shape. It can only be explained as a rate and duration of observed change.
Together, these ideas inspired Erik Wøllo in the creation of his latest album. With THE SHAPE OF TIME, Norwegian composer Wøllo transforms the abstract into nine compositions of thoughtful and seductive ambient electronic music with melodic soaring themes, vast slow-moving drones and rhythmic patterns drifting in cycles of transmutable harmonies. These hushed and endless moments present an exquisite collection of moods and emotions. Ranging from the vigorous and earthy to mesmerizing, evocative and wistful late-night Nordic light-scenes. All created on synthesizers, samplers, electric and acoustic guitars. The opening title track choir floats between a few simple but lush chords, an almost neoclassical sound-painting of a vivid panoramic picture. The track returns in a second movement later in the program as a sonic meditation of introspective longing combing the mind and memories; it bears resemblance to the first track via the same virtual sampled choir. The spacious “Nebula”, the instantly appealing and memorable “Le Paysage” and “Earth Trek” carry on from where the opener leaves off: colorful soaring sounds exist within a backdrop of swirling textural sequences and light percussion offering a positive experience. “Midnight Sun” has a melodic form based on the Norwegian lullaby tradition, almost unreal picturing the golden night-times in a Scandinavian summer. Gently sweeping sonic clouds surround the repeating notes that ring out in the memorable “Transformation.” “Runestones” finds its way through a rhythmic drive with a web of mysterious cavernous floating drifts. Created on an assemblage of acoustic guitars, his 14th Projekt solo album sees Wøllo explore the instrument he first loved. It’s an album of twelve melodic moods — an intimate collection showcasing a fresh perspective on Wøllo's artistic range and versatility.
With reflections of his two previous guitar-music albums — GUITAR NOVA (1998) and BLUE SKY, RED GUITARS (2004) — Wøllo imaginatively combines intricate finger picking patterns and sweet-sounding melodies with dreamy and enchanting compositions often enhanced with extensive use of the EBow and slide. The guitars sometimes meet with the Finnish Kantele and other stringed instruments as well as percussion from hand drums, shakers and triangles. “Everything you hear,” Erik says, “is acoustic; there were no synthesizers used on this album. Lately I’ve felt the urge to further explore my relationship with the acoustic guitar. Recording CLOUD OF STRINGS was a chance to rediscover this instrument and its cousins using all my experience from working with electronic music for the last 40 years. When I was younger, I was the kid who sat in his bedroom all the time obsessed with rehearsing 10 hours a day. My plan was to study to be a classical musician. A few ideas from those times — when I still was in high school — made their way onto the album. For example ‘Interlude Duet’ was actually composed in 1978. I wanted to see how these elements would emerge in 2023 with a focus on multitrack layering with all the nuanced dynamics that is so natural within the strings.” Erik continues, “My earlier acoustic guitar albums were well-received by critics and the fans. Reviews noted their elegant and poignant sound rich in depth with a lot of texture and ambient flavor. Moving forwards from there, on this album I blend emotive themes with distinctive rhythmic patterns and complex sonic layers of drone textures. Utilizing studio techniques like bowing the strings with added effects and employing more unconventional objects resulted in expansive shimmering atmospheric and ethereal tones. Applying this instrument’s abilities within a broader musical context uncovers the warm resonance and rich natural tonal qualities." Each track reflects this focus, carefully forming a strong unity of twelve movements. The opening “Rainshine” is a familiar Wøllo-style mood: EBow tones hovering over a dark atmospheric drone. “Windsong” has strong and memorable iridescent phrases beautifully performed with understated and minimal harmonic movements drifting in place with extensive use of repetition. “Avalon,” “From Ground to Sky'' and “Motion Picture'' are all rhythmic pieces composed with a few tonal phrases and motifs combined with various percussion patterns. A gentle mosaic mixes the earthly and the celestial. “Ecotopia” with glassy 12-string themes and “End of an Era,'' built upon long soaring EBow tones, are slow drifting enigmatic compositions whose melancholy seems to tell a dreamlike story. “Ruralis” and “Interlude Duet'' are chamber music-like where Erik plays duets with himself. There are free-form pieces like the title track performed on two Kanteles and bowed guitars. “Snowfall” ends the album with a cascade of layered arpeggios including repeating elements from the first track’s EBow theme. The equator is often seen as a dividing line between different hemispheres. The title might indicate a crossing from one musical hemisphere to another, or perhaps it represents a metaphorical line between the known and unknown, the familiar and the unfamiliar. CROSSING THE EQUATOR mixes restrained passages and occasional rhythmic zones. This beauty is in service of a deeper story. "Solastalgia" — a term coined by Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht — combines the Latin word for “comfort” and the Greek root for “pain, suffering, grief.” It describes the homesickness you experience when still at home as your environment undergoes significant change or degradation due to ecological damage and the loss of a connection to the natural world. Erik reflects on this, “Being an artist in our time, it is impossible not to be affected by the big issues we face on our planet. Naturally, these matters will somehow influence the music I make. Every road we travel, every house we see, has resulted in a loss of our original ecosystems. For every computer, for every car or every new shirt, producing these has most probably erased areas of untouched wilderness. This is the paradox the term ‘Solastalgia' addresses: the sadness and distress caused by awareness of the way we humans alter and destroy the earth to expand our lifestyle. In order to exist in the technologic world, we ravage our natural surroundings. “These thoughts go back a long way in my mind, all the way back to childhood when my father chopped down a big area of trees on our farm to make a field for the cows. I played often in this forest. I felt very sad when it was gone — forever altered. Ravaging our surroundings is not sustainable, we need to change. But how? Another big paradox. I love my computer and my gear with which I produce my music; I like to have a car to go anywhere I want. And my house and a garden? Again a big paradox. “For this album I imagined I was scoring a documentary film about threatened ecosystems. We venture into areas where damage has occurred. We see landscapes forever changed. We see how it originally was and how it has become today. There is a huge amount of nostalgia and sadness reflected in the music. I do not have solutions for this, and I do not want to be political about it. I am describing it. Uncovering something that perhaps few think about in their daily life.” Guiding the listener through rhythmic sequencer-based sections interspersed with misty ambient zones and soaring electric guitar textures, SOLASTALGIA forms a many-faceted opus. Silent Currents is the 15th release from the Norwegian guitarist, synthesist and composer following his successful 2010 Projekt release, Gateway. In June, Wøllo released The Road Eternal collaboration with Steve Roach succeeding their 2009 joint effort, Stream of Thought; both essential albums in the electronic genre introduced a new audience to Wøllo's personal signature of introspective atmospherics. Star’s End is one of the longest-running radio programs of ambient music in the world. Since 1976, this show has provided the Philadelphia broadcast area with weekly midnight musical adventures. The concept of the “Silent Currents” project showcases a different side of Erik Wøllo’s sound. This show was Erik’s fourth Star’s End performance; the previous three released on the double CD Silent Currents/Live at Star’s End (Projekt PRO262, 2011), and Silent Currents 3 (Projekt ARC00100, 2013). The artist says, “I bring various sonic excerpts, loops and atmospheres and perform and compose these into long continuous sections all in real time. I think the interesting things happen below the surface where everything has a slow, suspended character. Like a deep river flowing unnoticed, motion happening in the undercurrents, or tidal water flowing in the opposite direction of the top flow. These ideas have been substantial in the composing of this music.” Mesmerizing parts stream seamlessly and morph into dreamlike episodes, evoking endless space with downtempo grooves, soaring guitars, spatial explorations and bubbly sequences all moving very slowly and imperceptibly, drifting from one zone to the other. The aspect of time grows more and more apparent. The compositions evolve and curl, criss-crossing among elongated morphic pulsations and occasional sparse percussion; Wøllo’s trademark ebow soars above sequential movements with abstract chords alternating in succession. “I wrote this music at my cottage,” Wøllo reflects, "which is located in a remote mountain landscape in Norway. Those weeks in March had nice, cold winter weather with an unusually high amount of snow. This pure, vast and dramatic scenery influenced the music. Imagine high snowy mountain peaks, frosty smoking rivers, sunlit hoarfrost trees, a cinematic landscape seen through ice rose windows of a warm cottage. This music is inspired by the moods of the nordic nights in Norway where Erik lives: tranquil, expressive and lyrical. Even sometimes gloomy. Tides: the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of gravitational forces exerted by the Moon, Sun, and rotation of the Earth. Echotides is highly engaging and meditative with a delicate and finely structured symbiosis between the slow motion atmospheres, sparse melodic lines and detailed rhythms (accentuated by the contributions from percussionist Kouame Sereba on two tracks.) “Echo and tides, these two natural phenomena inspired this music,” Erik says. “They were in the back of my mind as I worked. Incidents surround us all the time; life develops in cycles, oceans move in cycles; the constantly moving, ebbing and flowing present, forever repetitive. I use these terms as metaphors for the sound and structures in the compositions.” “I started this project by recording various loops using my guitars and the two new special effect pedal boards that I assembled,” Erik continues. “I collected various brand’s pedals and devices, put together in a chain. Devices for looping, harmonizing and other effects. “I spent several months of improvising, just collecting ideas. I then selected the best suited pieces and augmented them with sequenced synthesizers and percussion elements. The whole idea for the project was to create a sustained and free floating selection of tracks built upon interacting fragments of sound and processed textures, all blended together and forming a constant morphing endless flow.” Echotides is deeply expansive and contemplative electronic music. It spawned a series of reports in the New York Times and a best-selling book, published in 2019.
The Outlaw Ocean Music Project involves musicians from around the world making music related to this specific journalism. The way Ian Urbina sees it, musicians and journalists are both storytellers — one using sound, the other leveraging words. As of early November 2020, over 400 musicians from more than 60 countries have translated his stories into music that is heard globally on more than 200 music streaming platforms, including Spotify and Pandora. Now we have a fresh cache of songs specifically from Nordic musicians, which were released on 11th December. I’m wary of politics in songs right now, in the midst of the one of the greatest upheavals in political history and with Lord knows what implications for all of us. But these songs aren’t overtly political in the main and in fact are quite relaxing; merely relaying the intended message calmly and with a similar restful musical theme to all of them. It is an analogy I have used often but most of them do remind you of those ‘lapping waves’ audios that you can sometimes access on aircraft to help you go to sleep. Erik Wøllo (Norway) – Seafarers (from the album ‘The Abandoned Sea’) The most ambitious piece in this quartet, the six-minute ‘Seafarers’ is almost orchestral, and verges on film score status in parts. “As a composer and musician for 40 years, musical ideas surround my mind all the time. My musical flow becomes an important part of who I am, it becomes a way of living. The best musical ideas often arrive in the middle of doing something else. In order to catch these ideas as they appear, I have guitars and loopers available in the rooms of my house. In fact, in my kitchen there is a nice spot for rehearsing, and I have a guitar and a looper always available ready to record. Over the last few years this has resulted in a lot of interesting, intuitive and exciting sketches. For this EP I collected some of the best performances into a suite in 7 short episodes (totaling 30 minutes). All of these tracks are performed on various electric guitars, looping pedals and effects. No synthesizers. Very minimalistic, ambient and abstract experimental. I use a lot of backwards techniques and play against these. Inverting the intervals, scales or phrases. Reversing the order of the musical material inside the compositions." “Later in my studio I played back the looper machines into two guitar amps in stereo, giving the music a smooth-colored sound. I recorded them using my best microphones to capture the performances and also to capture some of the acoustic room ambience. I wanted a close up and spontaneous living room feel on the whole album. A calm here-and-now attitude, at the same time with a lot of space. A kind of macro/micro perspective, like an astronaut sitting in a space station looking down on earth thinking about the dinner smell at his home kitchen far down there on earth. The French term "Le Paysage" refers to the scenery depicted in the music. "Paysage" is the word for “landscapes" and it can refer to the physical environment as well as the emotional or psychological topographies depicted through sonic elements. It’s the feelings and sensations evoked by nature to create a sense of place and location. Over the years, Erik has taken influence from French impressionist painters from Monet and Cézanne and composers like Ravel, Satie and Debussy. They captured the impression of light and atmosphere in their works rather than focusing on accurately reproducing details; like them, Erik sees the essence in dreamy panoramas and surroundings. On the EP’s two remixes, “Le Paysage” and “Nebula,” Erik comments, “When I work on new material for an album, I often make several arrangements of the tracks exploring new and creative ideas. Later I choose the ones that fit the unity of the rest of the album. This results in a lot of unreleased material. I found it interesting to give these compositions a new take and a new sound.” The other three tracks — “Illuminated River,” “Serenity" and “Rays of Dawn” — are brand new pieces composed for this release. Like its predecessor, Kinishba birthed from many years of study, on-site research, recordings, and collaborations with a variety of Apache tribal members, most notably Edgar Perry — who was a significant contributor to the preservation of Apache traditions. This new release entwines the electronic ambient sound that Martin and Wøllo are known for with traditional tribal instrumentation throughout, highlighting these collaborations. “Burial Ground” opens with Martin’s ethereal refrain: “Here I am, Here I stay,” an honoring song for those who have gone before us. From its austere beginnings, the track swells into the hypnotic as Leno Edwards, Alfredo Way and Edgar Perry add drums and vocals of an Apache Crown dance. Martin’s vocals soars with theirs over a lush bed of Wøllo’s synthesizer for the composition’s riveting finale. On “Fort Apache Meadowlarks,” Wøllo’s euphoric guitar glides over a tapestry of Martin’s pueblo shakers, Taos drum loops and vocalizations. The entire work features these powerful sonic realizations engaging the listener in a transformative experience. For Martin and Wøllo, Kinishba is “the house of the ancestors,” the inspiration for this latest work about honoring those who came before, and the healing power of ceremony. Kinishba, named for an abandoned pueblo on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, is a reflection on this theme, a vivid collection of 10 pieces that open a respectful, authentic window into remembrance ceremonies of the Apache people. After five years working on their own solo music, the duo reconnected to record this hybrid collaboration between continents and cultures. The pieces bring together a vast selection of synthesizers and electric guitars mixed with various acoustic hand drums and percussion instruments. Seven of the eight tracks were composed via audio files exchanged from Norway to Arizona and back again; while “Linked Stars,” the final and most spacious track, was recorded live in Byron’s studio in Arizona. Erik says: “My original vision with this project was to combine my etheric elements with grounded and reality-oriented rhythmic grooves (or patterns) as the basic foundation for the music; a sound flowing freely along with the currents all the time balancing the dark with the light. I have worked with many drummers over the years, but with Byron everything fell into the right place. He’s been a professional musician for over five decades and has worked with some of the best players you can imagine. One of his real strengths is his ability to create the absolute right solutions for any melodic or rhythmical texture, making the arrangements complete. I noticed very quickly that he has a certain skill of playing towards and supporting a leading melody – a skill only an experienced drummer can understand.” The dramatic images of the album cover reflect the music’s contemplative and timeless perception of our planet. Seeing the world from above from an airplane’s cockpit (in photos taken by pilot Ian Dutton) reveals reflective perspectives of the earth below: a magnificent visual confluence of the sky and the glittering nighttime urban city lights. Earth Luminous’ lustrous soaring themes, moving electronic drones, and bedrock rhythmic patterns drift and unfold in a lush electronic treatment of modern instrumental music. Blast (DiN6) with Markus Reuter as Centrozoon, Präposition (DiN13) as one half of Subsonic Experience, Moiré (DiN18) with label boss Ian Boddy and most recently on Conundrum (DiN27) with Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock. On Arcadia Borealis Bernhard is joined by Norwegian ambient artist Erik Wøllo. Although this is Erik's first DiN outing he is well known internationally having released many acclaimed albums on labels such as Spotted Peccary and having collaborated before with well known artists such as Steve Roach. Indeed it was at a music festival in The Netherlands where Erik and Bernhard first met which coincidentally had DiN label boss Ian Boddy playing on the same bill. The basic premise for the music on Arcadia Borealis was to look at the 18th Century when Artic explorers were like the Apollo astronauts of their time. Venturing into the great unknown with the real possibility of never returning home. A time when the books of Jules Verne & H.G.Wells were setting the tone for the scientific advances that were still to come. Thus the album takes the listener on a journey into new and unexplored lands inspired by the landscapes and weather prevalant in Wøllo's Norwegian homeland. The 12 tracks cover a range of atmospheres with many environmental sounds providing an aural backdrop over which Wöstheinrich creates his characteristic organic, evolving rhythms. Wøllo is well known for the melodic element of his work and he weaves beautiful, beguiling melodies that rise and fall like the seas those early explorers would have sailed upon. At times the music has an austere simplicity reminiscent of Wøllo's Norwegian compatriot Biosphere and certainly each track paints a sonic picture that the listener can absorb themselves in. They previously collaborated in 2009 on the album Arcadia Borealis (DiN34) but have also been involved in several other DiN project collaborations. Most notably Wøllo in conjunction with DiN label boss Ian Boddy on Frontiers (DiN39) and Wöstheinrich also with Boddy on Moiré (DiN18).
During a visit to Germany in 2010 to attend the Schallwelle Prize ceremony for which Arcadia Borealis had been nominated Erik spent some time with Bernhard working on new ideas for a follow up album. Due to the busy work schedule of both musicians the gestation of this project grew intermittently over the next three years. They exchanged ideas and gradually those initial sketches coalesced into their second collaborative album Weltenuhr (German for World Clock). Pushing the boundaries of ambient electronica there is a strong vocal presence to the album with a beautiful, haunting female voice on the opener Gales as well as the albums title track. These pieces complement the other fully instrumental tracks which range from the pounding beat driven Subgiants to the ethereal Echoes Of Parlours. Bernhard’s inventive textural rhythms provide the perfect backdrop for Wøllo’s soaring E-bow guitar melodies on tracks such as Oculus and Denser World. Beautifully mastered by Lee Fletcher and with an intriguingly abstract cover image Weltenuhr is yet again another quality ambient electronica release from the DiN label. Erik says, “It became obvious when working with Michael that the music would reflect a very visionary and vast landscape. And it ended well; the last piece on the album is calm and melodic, reflecting memories of the travelogue that yields new, positive and open doorways.” In 2018, Wøllo and Stearns performed solo headline sets at the B-Wave Electronic Music Festival in Belgium. At dinner the night after their momentous performances, conversation got around to merging their talents and working on new music — CONVERGENCE was born. Over a year in the making, Michael worked in his studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Erik in his studios in Hvaler, Norway. The album is a perfect blending of technology, music and emotion utilizing sophisticated electronics, acoustic and original instruments like the Kantele from Finland and Michael’s self-built string instrument “The Beam.” Michael reflects, “The seeds of this collaboration were planted while I watched and listened to Erik’s performance at B-Wave. His set was an incredible blend of synthesis and live guitar. I was moved and thought, ‘Wow, it would be fantastic for us to create music together!’ I had collaborated with other artists before — Lisa Gerard, Steve Roach — but this was my first opportunity to blend with another guitar player (!) and an amazing synthesist too. After the festival, we sent each other photos from our teenage years as guitarists performing in bands. Amazingly we had begun our musical explorations at the same age in the same way. We began CONVERGENCE in the spring of 2019 with Erik sending a series of sketches, some rhythmic, others melodic. I worked with them using guitar, synthesizers and my scoring libraries. At some point, I sent Erik several sketches that were very atmospheric in nature. We shared audio files back and forth between Norway and New Mexico, and we would Skype to talk face-to-face about our ideas and progress. It was a great way to work, very different from scoring a film, where the collaboration follows the vision of a director and there are endless re-writes. This feedback and inter-connection between musicians with different musical backgrounds has always been one of the DiN labels main aims which continues to produce fascinating and unexpected results.
Frontiers (DiN39) is a musical travelogue through lands unknown although the sonic climate is very much influenced by the two musicians shared Northern European heritage. The album is book-ended by Vista & Ascension which feature Wøllo's panoramic chordal backdrops over which Boddy plays his now famous "Ondes Martenot" glissando synth lead lines. Between these two beautiful, haunting tracks the album is built around four sequencer driven pieces, each gaining in intensity and culminating in the intense penultimate title track Frontiers. These are interspersed with more abstract and atmospheric interludes, featuring field recordings the two artists have made in their own personal travels through their respective native landscapes. Constantly shifting in mood and tone, the album leads the listener across vast, open, icy sonic landscapes whilst periodically sheltering in more warm humane zones. The duo were invited to play their inaugural concert at the Electronic Circus Festival V held in Guetersloh, Germany in the autumn of 2012. The organisers requested that Boddy & Wøllo performed as much of the Frontiers album as possible and indeed tracks 4 to 12 are taken from that release albeit interpreted for a live concert setting. A further 30 minutes of all new material was also composed and this comprises the opening 3 tracks of the concert. Despite this being their first ever concert together the two musicians gelled well on stage and gave a passionate and energetic performance. Wøllo weaving his ambient E-bow guitar lines around the infectious sequencer lines of tracks such as Spindrift, Prime Blue, Trek & Steppe. Boddy meanwhile played his Ondes Martenot style electronic keyboard to eerie & haunting effect on tracks such as Apfelbaum, Vista, Reverie & Ascension. The three new pieces combine perfectly with the mood of the Frontiers tracks to produce a superbly played & spell binding concert performance from these two well respected ambient electronic musicians. The duo effortlessly mix the analogue synth & string textures of Boddy with the intricate interlocking patterns of Wøllo’s guitar, that at times sound like delicate sequencer patterns. The rhythmic tracks slowly build in intensity throughout the album via the charmingly folk inspired tones of “Golden Times” to the climax of “Rescue” with it’s thundering Berlin School inspired bass sequence. As with their other work together “Revolve” is a continuous sonic journey, with the tracks joined together by slices of sonic ambience and field recordings. Whereas their previous two albums seemed to inhabit the frozen landscapes of the North, this time the duo seem to be exploring warmer climes. The combination of Boddy’s Moog and modular sequencing with Wøllo’s ostinato guitar patterns creates sections that ebb and flow structurally with a beguiling sense of space and freedom. Beautifully ethereal textures give way to pulsing rhythmic sequencers underpinned by solid bass lines and shimmering percussion lines, as evidenced most succinctly on the title track. Over these structures Wøllo’s guitar motifs soar and glide, especially when he uses the EBow to produce a haunting, legato tone colour. The final track “Adiona” sees Boddy joining Wøllo by playing his Ondes Martenot style French Connection keyboard for a stunning duet to close the album. Certainly cinematic, “Revolve” is a stunning musical travelogue that cries out to be listened to as a whole album and shows the mastery both these composers have in their craft. Organic electronic and new ambient sonic boundaries effortlessly dissolve on Stream of Thought.
With the combined experience of these two veteran electronic composers, this collaboration flows with an agility of emotion and intellect in fluid interplay; minimalist-inspired melodic tapestries, pulsing trance passages, deep drone drifts, and surreal soundscapes morph into cloud-like forms: a constant state of sonic evolution. The results stand apart from the extended immersive long-form tracks of Steve’s recent releases. While Stream of Thought is presented as a continuous flow of 19 interconnected pieces, the metaphor of sitting on a stream’s edge under full engagement with the present moment is the appropriate context to experience the fluid ebb and mercurial flow of this living, streaming soundworld. Roach and Wøllo’s similar age, musical inspirations and sonic inclinations – along with a mutual respect for each other’s 25+ years of work – inform Stream of Thought. Starting on two continents with two very different atmospheric conditions (the vast desert of Steve’s Arizona and the icy solitude of Erik’s homebase in Norway) this release began to take form in early 2007, as the composers traded musical ideas back and forth across long distances. The most formative aspect of the collaboration occurred in the summer of 2008 with Erik’s visit to Steve’s Timeroom studio in Arizona. Their week yielded the final recording, arrangement and editing. The approach to the album’s structure was more like that of film editing, where a sense of time and pacing was consciously developed to activate a powerful visual/auditory reaction, a visceral experience. Stream of Thought explores the nuance of shifts within our perception. Segments of illumination juxtaposed with amorphous interludes and moving, flowing rhythm culminate in an unforgettable, shifting, dynamic experience. Relax and float downstream. Following their collaboration Stream of Thoughts (Projekt, 2009) Roach and Wøllo reunite to travel The Road Eternal: an electronic/ambient path filled with passion and beauty. Six engaging and expansive rhythmic sequencer-based tracks intersperse with ambient zones and soaring electric guitar textures highlighting sparse, arching thematic lines. Wherein their first collaboration blended a number of shorter passages into a spellbinding whole, The Road Eternal is six longer compositions that build upon a basis of complex, inventive and hypnotic sequencer patterns. Intricate and ever-changing rhythmic cycles merge with melodic phrases creating a compelling groundwork that propels the music forwards. With inspiration drawn in part from classic trance-inducing electronic music with early German roots, the project takes on an interwoven structure draped with harmonic and melodic passages. The route through the music offers different perspectives to hear or "see" on every listen. This is the sound of big skies, open roads and soaring thoughts pulling one towards the next destination; reflected in the music is the counterplay of long and meditative rythmic zones and constellation-like melodic elements filled with space. The tracks transpose two different worlds: Steve's southwestern desert habitat and Erik's home base in Norway. The sum of these two environments becomes a hybrid landscape of new discovery. "We are both passionate about the observation of nature and the poetic character of natural surroundings," Erik says, "The ways in which we relate to this, as well as the awareness of the ongoing passage of time.
