Staring from a young age as a drummer, Cardinal quickly turned to writing his own compositions with computers and a modest assortment of gear.
In 2008 Cardinal took a postition at BioWare Edmonton as a game sound designer on the Mass Effect and Dragon Age Franchises.
In 2009 Cardinal self-released the debut Comaduster album / EP ‘Slip Through’ for donation only.
The album was a group of selected tracks from a period between 2002 and 2007 which were then re-mixed and reworked to fit the album as a whole.
The track ‘Foam Abattoir’ was feature on Dependent Records ‘Septic IX’ compilation in 2010.
In 2011, after contributing a remix to Architect's 'Upload Select Remix' release on Hymen Records, Cardinal took the Comaduster audio visual composition ‘Scrape’ to the stage at MUTEK 2011.
‘Scrape’ fused a glitchy dark-ambient soundscape with hi-definition macro videography on a large screen.
In 2013, the digital single 'Winter Eyes' and the full-length album 'Hollow Worlds' were both released on the U.S. electronic music label Tympanik Audio.Albums

To celebrate this partnership, FiXT and Comaduster are excited to re-release the 2017 sci-fi concept album Solace along with a special remastered edition of the critically acclaimed 2013 Electronic/IDM album, Hollow Worlds, ahead of new material later in Fall/Winter 2018.
Plus, for the first time ever, the instrumental versions of each track from Hollow Worlds will be available in November 2018. Artist Quote: Solace is a science fiction concept album, and the long awaited follow up to 2013’s ‘Hollow Worlds’ album. The themes conveyed touch on entropy, extreme time-scales, and how those can impact intelligence, emotion, and identity. A simple group of non-corporeal lifeforms called ‘The Void’ are the only sentience to remain and are clinging to the last vestiges of energy left in a universe going dark. Heatdeath is upon them, but forces beyond their understanding will pull some of them into worlds well beyond the breadth of their experience. Overwhelmed by paradox and on the verge of the final darkness, some of these beings try to survive and make sense of what is set before and behind them. Strands can be unravelled here to parallel human ‘mental illness’. I don't want to be vague. The emotional weight expressed through this story mirrors my own struggles with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative and Depersonalization issues, Anxiety/Panic, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Sometimes seemingly insurmountable issues can only be expressed through art and metaphor. From my own perspective, the idea of ‘mental illness’ has become some what of an umbrella catch all for a myriad of distinct problems or situations. It’s kind of become a banner to compartmentalize a lot of difficult to discuss, and largely individual issues. Awareness is up. Unfortunately it’s still misunderstood, generalized, and now politicized. There are spectrums where a lot of us choose to see a single point. I can’t say I have any answers. But this album is a cyclical expression of one of many stories that will continue to repeat. Included is a custom made PDF booklet that contains the lyrics, and an index to provide some insight and context for the science fiction concept of the record. The album’s intricate music production is juxtaposed by powerful vocal performances from Comaduster himself, as well as multiple tracks featuring the talented female vocalist, Mari Kattman. Though not a concept album -- at least not nearly as much as the previous Comaduster album Solace -- the album is heavily inspired by our deep but incomplete understanding of extreme physics, and metaphysical aspects of our lives. The emotional core is much more personal and direct than anything Cardinal has previously produced, resulting in a darker and grittier atmosphere than previous Comaduster albums. This record functions simultaneously as a standalone audio experience and a conceptual framework — a sonic artifact that emerged from a speculative science fiction premise in which a universe altering event,
the LIMINAL ZERO EVENT, reshapes the very structure of space, time, and memory. This narrative isn’t presented overtly, but rather infused into the music through tone, form, texture, and haunting resonance. The conceptual premise itself started as an offshoot thought experiment written during the writing of 2017’s ‘Solace’ album. A high science fiction concept narrative about a recursion of reality and identity along profound time scales. It was abandoned as a narrative related to the Solace universe, and became a writing tool for material that was to appear as an anachronistic Comaduster side project. Much of this music was reimagined in 2019-2021 and 2023 — and the sci-fi premise was re-introduced. The LIMINAL ZERO EVENT is imagined as a sudden phase shift in cosmic inflation, expanding spacetime in infinite dimensions beyond the speed of light. It leaves behind a skeletal structure of reality, frozen in fragments, with the Planck length becoming infinite. The fundamental forces remain locally coherent relative to each absolute point, but only through personal gravitational memory anchors known as Liminal Zero Points (LZPs). Reality and it’s parameters dilate relativistically like time.
Memory itself becomes an aspect of gravitational force — the quantum effects of gravity now brought to a macro scale. As one moves through the resulting Liminal Nether, coherency with others and oneself fractures. Paradoxes bloom along relative manifolds. Mimics form—versions of the self that could not be, yet still influence and haunt. Throughout MEMORY ECHOES, older versions of songs emerge like ghosts. Hooks appear before their canonical arrival. Degraded stems twist and re-emerge. Memory is recursive. Derivation is deliberate. Every song contains elements of every other. The production is murky and subversive by design. Coherence is not guaranteed. Previous forms bleed through. The signal is jammed. The album also features a number of collaborators, each chosen for their unique emotional voice and presence. Mari Kattman (Metropolis Records) appears on "BLACK SUN RAYS" and "HOMEWARD,"
the latter of which also includes Webb Cardinal — Réal’s father—on classical and acoustic guitars. Alex Reed (Seeming, Artoffact Records) brings lyrical depth and dissonance to "THE LESS YOU KNOW," layered with Elijah Hennig’s guitar and sonic texture. Elijah also contributes across several tracks throughout the album. Tonal and visual influences include puzzle-box storytelling like Netflix’s DARK and Maniac, analog and liminal horror à la Kane Pixels and SCP lore, the dream-associative surrealism of David Lynch, and FromSoftware’s environmental narrative logic. The official artwork for both the album and its accompanying singles was created by Seth Broman of grymlife.com and ONSET AUDIO. The visuals vividly encapsulate themes of transformation, recursion, and altered states of memory. Despite its speculative framework, MEMORY ECHOES is not just a concept album. It stands on its own as a collection of deeply personal and expressive music that explores human grief, nostalgia, sonder, memory, and identity. The science fiction is there to crack the structure open. The emotional core bleeds out on its own. Within this framework, each track is a window into a lived experience from this fractured reality. 'Ordinary World' -- is a song that means a lot to me, and I eventually ruled it was too close to home.
'Come Undone' is such a hypnotic and beautiful downtempo pop song... but actually has a really wild and winding arrangement! I was actually pretty shocked when I mapped it out.

'Come Undone' came out on top -- but I was not ready for the vocal challenge. I know Simon is pretty much a god, but when working through the parts and realizing how effortless (even after watching some live footage) he moves between, a very projected head voices, and then to smooth falsetto and back in blink. And yeah, I think I needed to drop this a semi-tone? Those ending notes are hard, yo!
