The album is true to the band's style: a blend of electronic minimalism and catchy melodies wrapped up in an immersive soundscape, with a strong and charismatic voice to top it all. Erik is the machine master; he leads the way to unusually melodic soundscapes (try 'Sliding Doors' for size!) and also lends his voice to 2 tracks: the instant classic 'Tête Panse' and cheeky 'I love my synthé' (synthé being French for synthesizer). Lukk brings a clear message in his raw and powerful voice. Then there's 'Help Me'; an alluring mix of compulsive acoustic percussion with a very strong melody, and vocal harmonies not entirely unlike a certain David Bowie. 'Anymore' handles the issue of abuse of authority, and even offers closure. Finally, 'Take Care' tries to reassure those who have lost their way. It's also a nice play on words between being careful and offering support to those who are in need. The EP offers 6 tracks in very diverging styles. This is their third and it’s called DI*rection. The album features Erik (¬the machinist) and Lukk as he-who-comes-with-lyrics-and-a-voice. It’s yet again an album full of troubling atmospheres that never fail to lure you onto the dance floor. The band’s previous opus, DI*verge released back in late 2010 featured this very combination of solid music with narrative lyrics that didn’t always show the nicest side of mankind. Well, the band hasn’t changed their outlook on life, and it’s a major topic that starts the album. In Angry World a little girl is kidnapped by a man on a playground. One can only guess what becomes of said girl, but let’s say that it probably doesn’t bode well, given the song’s title. Next is a song that is based on a dance groove that never stops captivating. Introduced by the enthralling voice of Nathlips, Car Crash is a song which follows the meanders of the character’s life desperately wanting to make a difference. And that’s not entirely unlike the story behind the intriguing and synth-poppy Delirious (next up) where a woman who’s about to get married finds out she really isn’t into her spouse-to-be. She decides to stand up for herself and walk away. That brings us seamlessly to … Walk Away. A powerful and sustained dance track about a famous female singer (Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental - or is it?) who doesn’t want to understand she’s kind of had her time. Walk away gets across the idea that there are things in life that one cannot avoid, and that’s what Stop the Rock deals with: the inevitable. Not that it gives a manual about how to handle it; it’s a fast track like a locomotive that whirls by, and you don’t know where or if it will stop. The band’s music has been described as being unformatted. Well, take the closing track for measure; The Game I lose is a song where machines rage harder than ever. It tells the story of a man who’s been influenced by all the wrong people in his life; he even suspects the devil has a hand in it. And it’s as though the devil is in the music, too.
