"Full of wild legato lines and looping delay--that’s the technical aspect of it. There was, of course, more than that. A storm was coming, we’d booked the show well in advance so we had no way of knowing that we’d be playing in the middle of a thunderstorm with high winds. The show was in a cinderblock room with a big warehouse door at one end which we’d elected to keep open so the room would stay cool. Partway through bill-mate Smokey Emery’s opening set we could hear water splattering on the floor as the room breathed and coughed with the expanding pressure and the roof began to leak at the wall line. We started to play the Ash Studio staff pulled the paintings away from the walls and did our best to play the storm away, or at least use it in our performance, and how that came out is what you hear here. He was a leading member of west coast and southwest musical acts Freaks Amor, The Blue Box, Second Culture and Cup all through the 80’s and 90’s. Also known in Austin as a visual artist and writer LCM returned to music in 2012, working with Willie Oteri and Dave Lazcko’s WD41+ and has been a longtime regular in Harold McMillan’s improv music scene at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard. Simultaneously he worked with Ramon Mills of Heterodox Records and Production Unit Xero on numerous adventurous recording projects. Since 2014 Ricardo’s main musical endeavor has been PetCatMan, an early 70’s Euro-prog influenced quartet. With LCM on synth, keys and devices, Christopher Petkus on Guitar, Steve Mankenberg on Drums, and Jakob Marsala on Bass. LCM is also in Dimmer Twins with Christopher Petkus, an improv electro freeform project, creating soundscapes, and soundtracks for films to be and never made. David Oliphant (-wdo) is an Arizona based sound artist active since 1979. Inspired by the late 1970’s D.I.Y. Punk and Outsider movement he began experimenting with home-made ‘found’ instruments, electronics and tape manipulation techniques in search of the occult side of sound and the pure joy of creating sonic paintings. This search includes solo and group adventures. Most notably the early 1980’s post industrial Maybe Mental and from the 1990’s dark ambient - electro-acoustic ensemble Life Garden. During the 2000’s he migrated to a live performance computer based sound creation system which he has developed today into a unique laptop instrument that inserts chaos or chance at various points in the signal flow. As a nod to experimental composer John Cage and his invention of the prepared piano David calls this instrument a Prepared Computer. In 2011 David collaborated with long time co-conspirator Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls, Rangda) to create Beyond All Defects. This seminal work fully embraced the sacred and profane influenced by Tibetan Buddhist - Dzogchen sentiments. With over 70 releases he continues this sacred sonic quest while remaining true to his Outsider - DIY roots following the idea to “it’s” conclusion without limitations, wherever that might lead. Resistor II a day long electronic music & culture event was set to go on the weekend just before the start of SXSW, a kick-off as it were to the tech element of it all. Resistor II was bringing together 15 electronic artists of all stripes to build community and expand knowledge of the scene. The outbreak cast a shadow of the whole event producing a lower turnout than an event of this type would have normally drawn. The show went on, none the less, to a smaller but intensely enthusiastic audience. Community was built, knowledge was shared… but the shadow remained. Distance and separation provides introspection, provides deeper freedom for experimental exploration. This was the landscape that gave birth to Dimmer Twins – The Space Between. Dimmer Twins, Ricardo Acevedo and Christopher Petkus, first formed in 2014 as a side project from their improv prog-noise band PetCatMan (with drummer Steve Mankenberg). The “DT” concept was to further explore drone and esoteric machine rhythm structures. Primarily improvisational in nature and live, Dimmer Twins released “32.77 / -96.76” (heterodox-records.bandcamp.com/album/3277-9676-htx032) full of wild legato lines and looping delay, but there was, of course, more to it than that. All through Acevedo and Petkus’s working partnership they discussed how to go about a deeper exploration of the Dimmer Twins concept. How to allow all the aspects of their divergent styles to come to the fore while staying true to their avant-garde nature. Beginning in 2019 ideas started to coalesce, various textures and beats were exchanged, but life and other projects kept the concept of a second Dimmer Twins release, an album of more studio-based tracks, on the back burner. Then in 2020, and the onset of tDIMMER TWINShe pandemic, both Acevedo and Petkus were provided the time and space to truly develop their vision for the aptly named “The Space Between”. With tracks that range from neo-electro blues funk, to longform theatrical ambient landscapes, to angular and languid forays into experimental drones, using looping, live sampling and playing, and deep dives into pools of reverb and atonal note structures. DIMMER TWINS sought to create something truly one of a kind, that understood at once our separate state of existence, and our shared sense of connection to each other, time and life experience. No one knows for sure what the future holds for any of us at this point. One of the player characters, Brassa, is a social media icon known for documenting various struggles against power around the galaxy. His first hit was a holovid about a music scene and genre called Zero Point Funk. The Z.F community used music activism to push back against greedy corporations on the vast orbital arcology, Absalom Station. Little did that player know that this exact mix of ideas: revolutionary social media and electronic music communities using music and community to resist Power, are cornerstone themes in The Aethyrium Cycle. From the moment I heard this back story, I wanted to incorporate Zero Point Funk into my musical work. So, when Ian of Elrond, who is also in the game, presented me with the Talanus 1 album and the suggestion that I make a Talanus 2, bringing Zero Point Funk to life was the obvious choice. I looked at my face and spoke my name, repeating it again and again, feeling the once-tight connection between name and face drain slowly of its power until suddenly they were severed and I fell. When my name disinherited my face, my spirit was released and flew into the ether. And the beauty and confusion that materialized saw reflections in the eyes of people I loved. Those facets crystalline are the sounds in premoniss, traveling at light-speed to nowhere in particular. Bukimi no Tani Genshō is a collection of work that falls between the spaces and chapters of my life. The tracks on this album were written in a time that I consider my uncanny valley. I was living in a tiny basement apartment that was way too small for me and my studio. I didn’t feel comfortable in the apartment or at my desk. I had recently split with my partner of 11 years and was between the life I had known and the life I was about to start. I could feel both of those spaces viscerally, but they were both out of reach. I wrote the tracks while sitting in bed with an Octatrack, Digitakt, and iPad, recording directly into a Zoom recorder, most recorded all in one take. At the time these tracks felt raw and highly emotional. I sat them aside and then began my next chapter.
