Our house was on a dirt road that was about a quarter of a mile from a paved road that ran parallel to it. The paved road was maintained by the county and had some county road number assigned to it, which I never learned. As kids we always referred to that paved road as “The County”, as in: “Hey Mom, Steve and I are going to ride our bikes down to the end of The County and back.” Night was always a lot different living out away from town, especially in the summer. In those days, we didn’t have refrigerated air and where we lived, on what they call the high plains, the air was dry and the temperature would drop sometimes thirty degrees or more from the high during the day. So, there were lots of nights when it was more comfortable to sleep with the window open to take advantage of the cool night air. Sleeping with the window open brought a whole different world into your room at night. I would wait until my eyes adjusted to the darkness after turning off the light and then go to the window and look at the stars, clouds, moon and whatever else was waiting there to be looked at. Then, lying in bed and drifting off to sleep I would listen to the sounds of the night: crickets and cicadas, dogs barking in the distance, cars being hot-rodded up and down The County, the bleating mufflers of diesel trucks using their “jake brake” to slow to make the turn from The County onto the highway a half a mile away. And then, during quieter hours, the sound of an irrigation motor on a nearby farm might echo across miles of open land if the breeze was just right. I think those years of sleeping with the window open are what trained my brain to embrace droning, seemingly monotonous tones. I say “seemingly” because I learned that what sounded monotonous was actually always changing, an ever-shifting blend of the low hum of distant traffic and the high droning sounds of insects, punctuated by a repetitive chorus of dog barks or passing vehicles. When the artist found a letter from a film studio and what looked like some pages from a novel buried far out in the desert. He was inspired to create this music and bring the manuscript back to life. NOTE: You will need to download the album to get the PDF with the original letter and manuscript for reading. Read the notes on this release from Another Neglected Hobby below: The idea to produce this soundtrack began with an arrowhead-hunting trip my wife and I took through the desert landscape of West Texas. We were riding dirt bikes down a dusty oilfield lease road when we spotted an abandoned Airstream trailer parked out in the middle of nowhere. The door was standing open and we could see that the entire interior had been stripped clean. We walked a few feet into the sand dunes surrounding the trailer, scouting for arrowheads or other artifacts, and came across something wrapped in plastic sticking out of the sand. It was a rectangular bundle about as thick as a magazine and appeared to have been buried intentionally. The persistent windstorms that sweep through the area on a regular basis had uncovered a corner of the plastic. I pulled it out of the sand and tore through several layers of plastic to find a letter from a film studio and what looked like some pages from a novel. Although the novel was missing the second half and a section from the middle, reading it planted a seed in my mind. For weeks afterwards, I kept wondering about what had happened to whoever lived in the old Airstream, and whether it might have been the author of the manuscript. I also wondered about the story contained in the pages of the novel and why the film studio considered it “too hot” to produce on film. When I learned about Aural Films and their production of soundtracks for films that do not exist, I knew I had to create a soundtrack for The Fortune Chronicles. Although we don’t know what happened to the author of the manuscript, the evidence suggests that some powerful force wanted to stop his story from getting out. I feel like fate led me to find what remains of the story and I now have an obligation to bring it out into the open. Squeaks, squeals and groans from rusted metal devices, the scraping of iron plates, etc. I've created visual works based on rust in the past, and during that period I often thought about the parallels between the oxidation of metals and what happens to us as physical beings. Our aging and eventual death seems akin to the lifespan of a piece of metal that slowly disintegrates as a result of oxidation. With this in mind, Oxide 3 incorporates additional sound sources to reflect the aspect of what one might refer to as 'human oxidation'. Activity. Movement. Life. Another Neglected Hobby - Steemer (27:18) I live in a ten-story condominium building that has two wings, and is roughly shaped like a wide "V". The open part of the "V" faces a concrete parking structure. Now and then, the local carpet cleaning service will park their bright yellow vans between the open "V" and the parking garage, run their long hoses to the unit they are cleanng, and start up the carpet cleaning machine, which is located in the van. When this happens, the most wonderful drone ensues and continues until the job is done. This recording is comprised entirely of sounds recorded during a three minute period as I walked from my condominium, through the lobby, past the cleaning van, and into the garage. The recording also caught the sound of some conversation between me and my wife as we walked. Several copies of the recording were layered, some reversed and some stretched. Another Neglected Hobby - Tarmac - Variation 4 (1:10:05) This recording began as an exploration of the JavaScript Systems Music blog post created by Tero Parviainen @teropa here: teropa.info/blog/2016/07/28/javascript-systems-music.html As a longtime fan of Brian Eno's Music for Airports, I enjoyed Tero's look at creating an automated JavaScript system to reproduce this composition. I decided to try to build something similar within a DAW, copying the piano samples from Tero's post, which were from the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra. Then, I used Kontakt in Native Instruments to create samples of the same twelve notes using a strings synthesizer. I arranged the twelve piano clips in one channel and used the trigger command so that each clip would play for a certain length and either repeat once or trigger the next clip in the channel. I did the same with the recorded string samples in a different channel. Next, I duplicated the piano channel twice and duplicated the strings channel twice, giving me three channels of piano clips and three channels of string clips. Seventh and eighth channels were added for clips of other ambient sounds and field recordings that I created. I refined the sounds by re-pitching some clips by one or two octaves and altering the length of the clips to add some randomness to the triggering of the clips as they played. For each recorded variation I began the track with a different triggered combination of clips, so that differing combinations of notes resulted. Variations also include some changes to the ambient and field recording soundbed. Variation 4 is the same recording of Variation 3, re-pitched and slowed one-half octave lower. The result is something that I hope exhibits some of the same characteristics that Eno's early ambient music did, that it can be both interesting and ignorable. As I prepared the tracks contained in this album, I spent some time thinking about the experience of living through unpleasant and unfamiliar circumstances. Time becomes distorted, slowing as we wait for something negative to pass, and it seems to speed up as it passes behind us into the deep well of our past. We look back and remember how difficult it was to endure the slow creeping of time, but from the vantage point of now that period of time looks as if it has been compressed into only a fraction of the original length that we experienced. The first track, entitled Closer to Normal, is a long-form exploration of patience, repetition and familiarity. The tracks that follow, Closer - Parts II through V, are the same exact track simply distorted by altering the speed and pitch of the original long-form track. Closer - Part II is exactly half the length of the long-form track, pitched down 12 semi-tones. Closer - Part III is exactly one-quarter the length of the long-form track, pitched down 24 semi-tones. Closer - Part IV is exactly one-eighth the length of the long-form track, pitched down 36 semi-tones. And, Closer - Part V is exactly one-sixteenth the length of the long-form track, pitched down 48 semi-tones.
