Toby Marks) (родился в 1964 году, Южный Лондон).
Banco De Gaia.
Два года ушло на создание новой работы Тоби Маркса "The Magical Sounds of Banco De Gaia".
В 2000 году Banco de Gaia выпустил новый альбом Igizeh, продолжающий традиции «The Magical Sounds...». Через четыре года музыкант порадовал своих поклонников очередной работой «You Are Here», а ещё через два года, в 2006, вышел «Farewell Ferengistan».

Artwork prepared in Dave's Multimedia Kitchen. Having cut his teeth on the early 90’s Ambient Dub compilations, Banco De Gaia released this, his first studio album, on Planet Dog records. It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on its release, reached No1# in the independent charts in the UK and was licensed worldwide. Unfortunately, the album then got lost in a legal limbo for the many years following the messy disintegration of the Planet Dog, Ultimate and Mammoth record labels, eventually falling into the hands of the Disney Corporation. Thankfully Banco’s Toby Marks managed to wrangle it back, and is re-releasing it, with updated artwork, plus three bonus tracks that are only available online. The album itself mixes up beautiful textures, soaring melodies and slamming grooves with sounds from the far corners of the world; light, airy breakbeats and endlessly pleasant pianos ripple against a large backdrop of Asian and other ethnic influences.

Written-By – T Marks One of the all time classics of modern electronica, Last Train to Lhasa is an incredible sonic journey whose globally inspired, groove infested soundscapes helped to form the blueprint for much of today’s global electronica. Following the success of his debut album Maya and a European tour with Transglobal Underground, Toby Marks travelled the world collecting inspirations. He joined The Tibet Support Group, and as a response to the decision to build the Qingzang railway between the cities of Xining and the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, in 1995 Marks recorded a 12-minute long track with looped vocal chants. This track inspired the creation of the whole album. As a political statement, Last Train to Lhasa’s subtle grace is an effective and eloquent way to express the tragic destruction of Tibetan culture in the face of Chinese occupation. But the strength of the listening experience will keep you coming back, regardless of your stance on the issue. The two-disc set jumps from choppy, Goa-style trance (Kuos) to blue-room chill tunes (China), the chugging locomotive techno of Last Train to Lhasa to the pan-cultural rhythmic stew of Kincajou and the burbling Orient-meets-the-Orb synthesizer textures of 887.

Who put sugar in the curry? Uncredits: Due to a rather complicated legal and political situation, we were unable to clear a vocal sample used on '887'. We have therefore had to edit that section out, which has left the track less than perfect, but it seemed best to still leave it on the CD anyway. Let's pray for the day when we will ALL appreciate music for what it is, rather than for it's financial or political value...

Written-By – Toby Marks Big Men Cry is considered by some to be the undiscovered masterpiece of the Banco de Gaia catalogue and its return is both long overdue and highly anticipated. The album’s original release was surrounded by chaos, due to myriad problems at the label (which soon after went bankrupt). As a result, despite getting airplay from Pete Tong and Annie Nightingale on Radio One, amongst many others, Big Men Cry never really broke through like it’s predecessors, Maya and Last Train to Lhasa. Which is a shame, as the album contains plenty of stellar moments, and was described as both “the perfect soundtrack to a little candle-lit bath time fun”(Big Issue) and as if “Pink Floyd had invested Dark Side Of The Moon with just one ounce of dub”(Muzik)! Raindrops, ethnic wails and pounding beats sit alongside bagpipes (Drunk as a Monk) and violins (Big Men Cry) while Dick Parry from Pink Floyd adds his trademark saxophone sound to Celestine. Fans of the film Pi may also recognise the track Drippy which featured in it.

Written-By – Toby Marks After taking time out to tour in 1997, Toby Marks moved from the UK Midlands to Somerset, in southwest England to set up a new studio. After recording the new CD, he then decided to set up his own label in England, Disco Gecko Recordings. The Magical Sounds of Banco de Gaia travels freely between the violins and cellos of Glove Puppet and the Kenyan rain song that forms the basis of the next piece, No Rain. So maybe it’s world music, or global trance; but it’s not intentional. ‘I used global samples without even realizing it’ he says. ‘I’m more interested in atmospheres. The texture is evocative rather than up front. There are no 3-minute pop hooks; you can’t whistle much of it in the shower.’

Parts of the album were recorded inside the great pyramid at Giza, the temple of Seti I at Thebes and other places in Egypt. Written and produced at New World Bank, Somerset, England. Mastered at Loud Mastering. Igizeh is as elusive as its title but as accessible as anything to come from the European dance music scene. Full of obvious references to Indian and Near Eastern music, as well as less obvious glances at American minimalist music, Igizeh is everything we’ve come to expect from Toby Marks – the one man in this one-man band. Several tracks on the new record sport field recordings made by Toby on location inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid at Gizeh, and on the streets of Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. Two others feature the vocals of Portland, Oregon native Jennifer Folker, including the album’s first single, the chilly, atmospheric ‘Obsidian.Top of FormBottom of Form But what about that title? An early press release hinted darkly at visions of creation in which Toby Marks was told to call the album Igzh. When asked what it means, Toby has a typical response: ‘Nothing really, though I like the story that it is the secret name of some cosmic entity – a bit like Jhvh becoming Jehovah.’ Then, unable to resist an equally typical note of mystery, he adds, ‘Let’s just say it’s a hidden name of power.’

The album is a series of musical snapshots of the world we live in as of 2003. It is not a slogan-shouting political tirade, more a meditation on how things are, a globally inspired series of soundtracks. From the typical Banco de Gaia floor filling booty-stomper Zeus No Like techno to the introspective and haunting heart-felt tracks Gray over Gray (featuring Jennifer Folker on vocals) and Still Life, You Are Here sees Banco de Gaia back on world beating form and as difficult to classify as ever.

Producer – Toby Marks Farewell Ferengistan captures the spirit and mood of Last Train To Lhasa but this time instead of being concerned with the remote tribes of Shangri-la, Banco De Gaia’s concerns are much closer to home. What are we doing to ourselves? Where is our materialism taking us, would it not be wise to consider our position? The music on Farewell Ferengistan is the wondrous mixture of exotic and urbane we have come to expect from Banco de Gaia – tantalizing vocals, haunting instrumentation, uptempo, downtempo, futuristic and ancient. It’s all there. After a decade and a half of music making, Toby remains as brave, experimental and willfully on his own path as ever.

Thanks to: Sandy, Rob, Dave, Gigs, Andy, Johnny, Ash, Magnus, Malcolm, Kath, Haydn, Will & Hugh (s'pose) - the many & varied crew types. Also Paul & Roz, Jo, Chris@Obsolete, CSE, Skan, VAT, Doggies, Whirlies, Transglobals, EBNs, Bongies, Michael & Planet Dog, Ultimae, Taylor & Mammoth, The Pyramid Builders of Antarctica & all other deserving beings. Who put sugar in the curry? Uncredits: Due to a rather complicated legal and political situation, we were unable to clear a vocal sample used on '887'. We have therefore had to edit that section out, which has left the track less than perfect, but it seemed best to still leave it on the CD anyway. Let's pray for the day when we will ALL appreciate music for what it is, rather than for it's financial or political value... released July 29, 1996 Written and performed by Toby Marks

Fans of the film Pi may also recognise the track Drippy which featured in it. released July 7, 1997 Written by Toby Marks

Written-By – T. Marks Apollo is Banco’s first new studio album in 7 years and brings together heavy dub beats, powerful vocal arrays, and lilting melodies, drawing inspiration from both old and new schools of sonic artistry, and in doing so blending the subtle flavours of the act’s historical sound with modern day techniques and ideas. Apollo opens with the powerful and evocative Lamentations, featuring the ethereal vocals of Zhenia Mahdi-Nau, before slipping into Wimble Toot, whose initially stuttering drums and bass build into a relentless rhythm, peppered with reggae style horns and saxophone, nicely setting the scene for the foot stomping, dust raising, dancefloor rousing Eternal Sunshine. For Such A Time is classic Banco in a 21st Century style, with its ambient pads, crisp hi-hat and dubby bassline providing a welcome respite before the tidal wave of energy and emotion that is Apollon: a bouncy blend of acoustic and electronic sounds weaved together by melodic strings and funky bass. Hu! maintains this momentum, with sultry Mediterranean inspired melodies underpinned by global beats and breaks. All Sleeping, featuring the legendary flautist Tim Wheater, is not just a step down in tempo, but also a step down into another world, a world of dreams, a world of fantasy. Oreia winds us back into consciousness, with sinuous oud, strange counting voices, Balinese chorus and haunting Turkish clarinets. The album ends, as it began, with the engaging voice of Zhenia Mahdi-Nau gracing Acquiescence, providing an affirming coda to the very welcome return of Banco De Gaia.

Written-By – T. Marks, Z. Mahdi-Nau (tracks: 1, 9) Make yourselves ready, as once again we enter the wonderful world of Banco De Gaia, this time with a little help from his friends. After the success of his most recent album, Apollo, Banco returns with Ollopa, a remix album that turns its source on its head: not only have the name and original track order been reversed, but the artwork is inverted too, with the sun becoming the moon and other symbols flipped upside down. The collection starts with Tripswitch’s sublime remix of Acquiescence, which builds slowly from an ambient opening into a downtempo delight, setting the tone nicely for both Antipodean duo, Deep Fried Dub, who add a cheeky dancehall lick to Oreia, and the high priests of sacred bass, Desert Dwellers, whose jittery yet soothing remix of All Sleeping is like sonic incense for the mind and body. The sinewy melodies of Hu! are strengthened and complimented by some tough, bass-driven beats on the Unusual Cosmic Process Remix, while Kaya Project’s worldly ears (and added vocals) guide Apollon to new enchanted places and the sheer beauty of For Such A Time is retained and enhanced by System 7, as they add their distinctive twisting and playful style to the track. Eternal Sunshine undergoes a radical change, courtesy of the Huff And Puff mix: the complex yet effortless new version rises from the ether, managing to be both epic and understated at the same time. Former Planet Dog labelmate Eat Static provides a suitably bonkers psychedelic Gypsy/Balkan mix of Wimble Toot, leaving Gaudi to end the collection with his remix of Lamentations, which encapsulates the emotion of the original within a funky, bass heavy breakbeat.

(8:43) 1995: fresh from finishing and releasing his magnum opus, 'Last Train to Lhasa', Toby Marks, aka Banco de Gaia, rolled down to Glastonbury Festival to play on the Avalon Stage in the Field of Avalon. The year was one of the first times dance music had been given significant space at the festival, and Toby’s set was much anticipated, with the marquee completely full by the time he came on stage. The set featured many of his most familiar songs, often given radically new arrangements, turning some previously un-danceable tracks into driving club tunes. Ed Vulliamy described it in his review for the Guardian as “electrifying: symphonic, epic, hugely lyrical music in the best traditions of the early Floyd, underpinned by synthetic energy but aiming at an appropriately earthy message, atop which a flute sometimes danced” and credited the show as the highlight of the year. Toby didn’t know until afterwards that the gig had been recorded, but after editing to remove an unclearable sample, it was released by Planet Dog in August 1996. According to the Melody Maker review, "the atmosphere of the recording is so vibrant and celebratory that you ... feel the musical playback actually benefits from the adoration of others." 2015: 20 years later Toby returned to the Field of Avalon with a full band and VJ. This time he organised the recording of the set, which is presented here as part of the 20th anniversary edition of the original release. This limited edition double disc set is CD only, with no downloads or streams available. As with the original disc, the new recordings try “to capture the spirit of the occasion rather than technical perfection” and include three tracks from his last studio album ‘Apollo’ (2013) alongside reworkings of various classics and favourites. released August 5, 2016

Featuring special guest artists, from Pink Floyd’s Dick Parry, Zero 7’s Sophie Barker, The The’s James Eller and No-Man’s Tim Bowness, The 9th of Nine Hearts is a celebration of the spark in all of us: the concept of love itself. Fusing ambient, psychedelia, art rock and acid house, each track evolves naturally into the next, with love the starting point to them all. The introspective Nine Hearts opens the album: a synth-fused jewel, with hints of Floyd-ian psychedelia, it features dreamy vocals from art rock vocalist Tim Bowness (No-Man). Inspired by the love in friendship, it merges into second track, Burn the Witch, whose edgy, prog rock beats clash with bold drum rolls and wild, orchestral ambience. Other highlights include the first single Le Foucauld, an electronic jamboree of joyous Middle Eastern samples and the lingering, melancholic beauty of ambient track And So We Dream of Futures Lost. The Princess and The Sky Goat, the ninth track on the album, opens with samples of coastal birds reworked into glittering, eerie textures. Dick Parry’s saxophone drifts across a mythical soundscape of oceanic calm, the backdrop to an opiate-chilled blend of bruised basslines and rugged riffs. Old time Banco de Gaia fans and contemporary dance-lovers alike will adore 91 – a dark, old school techno anthem, featuring samples lifted from an early Banco cassette-release. A thundering, bittersweet dancefloor filler, 91 is a throwback to the acid house movement and the idealism of the 60’s, and speaks to anyone dreaming of how to mend a fragmented world. Sophie Barker, who also wrote the lyrics, shines: her haunting voice, full of longing, calls to us all to keep love alive – not just on the dance floor, but throughout our lives. Poignant parting tracks, soundscape My Midnight Sun and vignette This Heart inspire hope and possibility. This is more than just an album: it’s a piercing lament, a call to arms, a musical pilgrimage, a celebration of love itself. It leaves you with a sense of renewal and a glowing reminder of how music, the universal language, is keeping our dreams alive. The 9th of Nine Hearts is a timeless homage to love, from a legendary artist and something we will all keep returning to. It’s definitely Banco de Gaia at his best. Release Date

The campaign was a classic case of the record company marketing one thing and the artist recording another. In this instance, the label and many of the public alike wanted “another Last Train to Lhasa” but for Toby Marks (AKA Banco de Gaia), another “Lhasa” was the last thing on his mind. Add to that a breakdown of relations between Toby and the record label and you have all the necessary components for a pretty uncomfortable album release. This was compounded by Ultimate Records, who licensed the Planet Dog label, going into liquidation shortly after the album’s release. As a result “Big Men Cry” never really got the attention it deserved and didn’t come close to the chart success of “Lhasa” or its predecessor “Maya”. This sorry state of affairs was little to do with the musical content: the reviews in the press were good (see below); the opening track “Drippy” was used to great effect in Darren Aronofsky’s film “Pi” and Rabbit in the Moon’s remix of “Drunk as a Monk” became a cult American rave anthem, championed by DJs like Adam Freeland and Dave Seaman. All of this meant that “Big Men Cry” became the ‘lost’ Banco de Gaia album, a situation this 20th Anniversary edition so justly rectifies. The reissue comes with a bonus disc which features previously unreleased alternative versions, classic remixes by Rabbit in the Moon, Temple of Sound and Future Loop Foundation, new remixes by Toby, longtime collaborator 100th Monkey (Andy Guthrie), and sound artist Digidub plus a live version of ‘Celestine’, recorded in Banco’s ‘local’, The Bruton Dub Club, by his three piece band. As with the previous 20th Anniversary reissues of Banco albums, “Big Men Cry” will only be available in limited edition CD format, with no downloads or streams available. Release Date 7 Jul, 2017

A move to Somerset allowed him to set up a new studio, and all the label intrigue from the last release drove him to find a new American partner in Six Degrees, and to set up his own label, Disco Gecko Recordings, for European releases. Two years in the making, “The Magical Sounds of Banco de Gaia” travels freely between genres and continents, from the European violins of "Glove Puppet" to the Kenyan rain song that forms the basis of the next piece, "No Rain." So maybe it's world music, or global trance; but it's not intentional. "I used global samples without even realizing it," he says. "I'm more interested in atmospheres. The texture is evocative rather than upfront. There are no 3-minute pop hooks; you can't whistle much of it in the shower." What you can do with “The Magical Sounds of Banco de Gaia” is sink deep into the rhythms - which does not necessarily mean you can dance to it. Marks adds layers of percussion ("I sometimes don't know when to stop") to create a fully anchored groove with surprising polyrhythms and syncopations. "I can't listen to a lot of dance music," he admits. "The groove is too stripped down. I like the more complex rhythms of rock, jazz, or Latin American music, where sometimes you can't even tell what the core rhythm is!" The 20th anniversary edition comes garlanded with an extra disc featuring an unreleased remix from the time, a stunning live medley, a fan remix discovered on Soundcloud, two modern remixes by fellow Disco Gecko artists (dr trippy and Simon Power) plus a live recording from WOMAD festival. “WOMAD was in Reading back then and we played in the sports centre which was basically a big concrete box. In the middle of summer. A very hot summer. I went on only wearing shorts and was soaked in sweat before the drums even came in. Great times." As with the previous 20th Anniversary reissues of Banco albums, “The Magical Sounds of Banco de Gaia” will only be available in limited edition CD format, with no downloads or streams available. released July 12, 2019 All tracks written, recorded and produced by Toby Marks at New World Bank, Somerset, England. Full of references to Indian and Near Eastern music, as well as less obvious glances at American minimalist music, the album was everything one had come to expect from Banco, but with additional highlights. Chief amongst those were the two tracks featuring the vocals of Portland, Oregon native Jennifer Folker, including the album’s first single, the chilly, atmospheric ‘Obsidian. The album also saw the introduction of field recordings to Banco’s arsenal, in this case made by Toby on location inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid at Gizeh, and on the streets of Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. From these, Banco de Gaia created multi-world music, featuring pumping synths and percussive accents, tribal drums and trumpet sounds, whirring electronics and whooshing jungle strings. The result was widescreen, technicolor worldwide grooves, some designed for the dancefloor, others for more horizontal listening. The 20th Anniversary Edition comes with a second disc of standout remixes from the time, including the previously vinyl only Jack Dangers dub, plus a handful of fresh remixes by fellow Disco Gecko artists released July 10, 2020

This compilation mixed and mastered at New World Bank, Somerset, UK, 2002. In 1992 Banco de Gaia first appeared on the Beyond Records Ambient Dub compilations, which were the forerunners of later chill-out compilations. 10 Year takes in the decade since then and is a celebration of a decade in musical terms and is also a celebration of the return of the global rights to the entire back catalogue to Banco de Gaia’s own label Disco Gecko Recordings.

14 Apr, 2003 10 Years Remixed was a limited edition release created following the success of the previous year’s debut Banco de Gaia compilation 10 Years. It began as a conversation between friends and evolved into a collection of remixes. This is a deeply personal document with every remix being commissioned by Banco himself and every remix with the exception of one mix being borne out of a long term relationship. In a super reactionary and totally cynical music industry how do you express your joy at what you do? After struggling to re-acquire his master tapes, how do you throw a sonic party? In this instance Banco de Gaia called his friends and the result is 10 Years Remixed, a beautiful collection of mighty fine exclusive remixes. 10 Years Remixed is the final statement at the end of an exhausting journey. You might call it closure. As an artist you are not supposed to cherish your own work or worry about who has the intellectual copyright, however for Banco de Gaia these issues are key. Disco Gecko was founded to put the music back out there. Regardless even of how it is perceived for an artist to ‘trade’ on their back catalogue. To quote John Lyndon of PIL ‘anger is an energy’ and channeled in the right way it’s amazing what can be achieved. 10 Years Remixed is the home coming parade and two fingers up to the men in suits, lawyers and chancers who stood in the way of the music. 10 Years Remixed is a party and it’s time to get down.

Written-By, Producer, Mastered By – Toby Marks Persian strings and prog rock. Tibetan songs and ecstatic house. Welcome to the strange, wonderful world of DJ / remixer /dance music maestro Banco de Gaia (aka Toby Marks) whose work sprang from the hopeful exuberance of British house, the joys of sampling, and the advent of global music. Now, new listeners unfamiliar with this funky founding father of eclectic electronica can savor nearly two decades of hits, rarities, and remixes on Songs from the Silk Road. An intro to the vibrant cross-pollination of house and world music, tracks shift from hard-hitting to playful, pulsing to ambient, all guided by a strong, omnivorous ear for powerful beats and delicate filigrees of sound. Pensive modal harmonies (“Farewell Ferengistan”—named for an obscure Central Asian term for Europeans) alternate with hand drum-heavy dub grooves (“Amber”). Gentle digital pops and glitches (“Big Men Cry”) give way to driving rhythms, stirring vocals, and glittering keyboards (“Last Train to Lhasa”). As Banco De Gaia puts it: “I wanted to round up the body of work and create a portfolio for new listeners. The origins of this sound, a sound that’s now ubiquitous, are really interesting, and I want people to know more about it. Back then in early days, we were inventing this whole new thing. This album shows that, and how things have evolved since.”

In chronological order, the compilation begins with an early experimental live track and ends with Banco’s latest work. Banco de Gaia was born in 1989 when Toby Marks and Andy Guthrie decided to try combining electronic dance music (dominated at the time by hip hop and acid house) with elements of ambient and world music. 30 years on the experiment continues and we thought it was time to take stock. The collection spans house, techno, breakbeats, world music, ambient, dub and avant garde, showcasing the wide range of Toby’s (and Andy’s) musical interests. Various guest musicians are featured as well as a variety of remixers who further extend the styles on offer. A lot of ground is covered over the 30 years but there is a consistency at it’s heart, reflecting Toby’s ongoing pursuit of a perfect musical expression whatever the style. released February 22, 2019 All tracks written by T Marks except:

The very first remix was a baggy version of Beautiful Happiness’s Something Sonic, while the latest is a cosmic re-version of Youth & Gaudi’s Empress of the Tarot. A sonic Banco thread connects them all. Some of the tracks are previously unreleased, while others, which predate the internet, are unavailable digitally, making this a must-have release for both serious Banco fans and for all lovers of alternative electronica. The collection came about by serendipity, as Toby Marks aka Banco de Gaia explains: “Putting this together was never my intention for 2023, as I’m supposed to be working on new music! However, someone on Twitter pointed out that 2023 marked 30 years since my first remix, and that milestone seemed worth commemorating. Only later did I remember that I made my first remix in 1990, not 1993, and so I had missed the anniversary entirely, but by then the project was well under way.” With remixes of work by electronic pioneers Zion Train, L.S.G. (AKA Oliver Lieb) and Mr. C alongside tracks from next generation cosmonauts like Youth & Gaudi, Desert Dwellers and Kaya Project, as well as those of troubadour Mazlyn Jones, Zero 7’s Sophie Barker, 90s pop-rock-techno group HED, percussionists Ensemble Bash, pioneer producer Wally Brill (now a Senior AI Conversation Designer at Google!), Franco-Iraqis AIWA, the wonderfully named Russian duo Sex Of Insects and Dr. Who sound designer Simon Power, Altered Realties is an eclectic musical journey through three decades of creativity, inspiration and evolution. released August 4, 2023 Simon Power - How Proud We Are (Banco de Gaia Remix)

21 Mar, 2013 The first single from Banco De Gaia’s new album, “Apollo”, the “Wimble Toot” EP features the title track, with amazing saxophone courtesy of Matthew Jenkins, and some pretty crazy remixes. Toby’s original partner, Andy Guthrie, has donned his 100th Monkey guise to turn in a sweet reggae mix; Merv from Eat Static has provided a suitably bonkers psychedelic Gypsy/Balkan banger while Misled Convoy from New Zealand’s Pitch Black has stripped the track totally back to create a bass heavy, dubwise soundscape.

21 Jun, 2013 ‘Apollon’ is the 2nd single from Banco De Gaia’s latest album ‘Apollo’.
Remixes come courtesy of a motley crew of friends and allies. First up is the amazing Kaya Project (Interchill), whose worldly ears (and added vocals) guide the track to new enchanted places. Bristol’s Playhead, on the other hand, inject a heavy dose of urban bass and vibes into the original, dragging it into a darkened nightclub! Loop Guru’s Sam D builds a solid mid tempo groove with a sprinkle of ethereal psychedelia thrown in, leaving Leamington legend Dr. Trippy to dub it up, adding reggae-ish horns and a dirty big skank.

15 Sep, 2013 It seems only fitting that as summer slips into fall, I release this ode to rest and relaxtion. The ‘All Sleeping’ EP features the original track, which is blessed with flutes from Tim Wheater and violas from Patrick Dunn, plus three additional remixes. The high priests of Sacred Bass, Desert Dwellers, provide a jittery yet soothing mix, while Mistrust’s electronica musings darken the original mood. Finally Hibernation lifts us back into a sweet space with a solid downtempo mix, sealed by the additional bass.

21 Dec, 2013 The final single from “Apollo” marks the end of a magical year for Banco De Gaia, with the release of his first new album since 2006, the three subsequent singles and then the remix album “Ollopa”. Along the way there have been shows all over the world, from Italy to Japan and Russia to Hungary. ‘For Such a Time’ features remixes from three excellent UK based producers: Kuba provides a dreamy, Zero 7-esque version with a rolling bassline and floating synths; System 7 add their distinctive twisting and playful style to the track, creating an ethereal vibe around a distinctly feel-good rhythm; while Animat’s take is more of a deep and dubby affair, awash with echo and delay, creating a lush and warm space.

30 Mar 2015 This year is the 20th anniversary of the release of Last Train to Lhasa. (You know, the one with the train on it). To celebrate I am planning a very special 20th anniversary edition of the album this summer, and to kick-start the celebrations I asked Ukraine’s Astropilot and Dublin’s Silinder to add some 21st Century flavour to the title track. Don’t panic! I have no intention of ruining the track by trying to make it hip and getting dubstep or electro house remixes done. I asked these guys because I knew they would be sympathetic to the original while adding their own vibe. I have shared many a stage with Dmitry Redko, the producer behind Astropilot, over the years and he has consistently impressed me with his approach and style. Likewise Gavin Mulhall, AKA Silinder, did such a good job with his unofficial remix of Heliopolis that I used last year for Maya’s 20th, that it seemed foolish not to ask him to create an official remix using the actual parts. The ‘Last Train to Lhasa’ EP comes out via all mainstream download stores on Monday 30th March, but I have released it now for pre-orders via Bandcamp. As well as the original and the two remixes, the new EP was originally programmed to include a very extended, previously unreleased eighteen minute ambient mix as well, but iTunes’ arcane style rules have prevented that from happening, so this mix will only be available from Bandcamp. Somehow I also found the time to edit the original video to sync up with the Radio Edit that we have been sending out to stations worldwide, and you can check this out on YouTube. As one final act of celebration this year I have also been rehearsing a new 3-piece live band for gigs this summer. It’s great to be playing with other people again and I’ll announce more about that soon.

Tracklist: 01.Banco De Gaia - Burn the Witch (5:25) Taken from my forthcoming album inspired by nine responses to love, ’Burn the Witch’ is not a cover version of the recent Radiohead song of the same name but a contemplation inspired by an old girlfriend of mine. The title came about as when we met she had been dressed as a witch for a fancy dress party and I had charmingly chased her around the gathering chanting ‘Burn the Witch’. Recently Nemone has been playing this track on both her own BBC6 show and on Lauren Laverne's morning show, and her interest and the feedback the track has had online since has inspired me to post it up for free download for the next 10 days. Tracklist: 01.Banco de Gaia - 91 (7:31) 02.Banco de Gaia - 91 (Mr. C Remix) (6:33) 03.Banco de Gaia - 91 (Bennum & Healey Dub Remix) (7:43) ’91’ celebrates the ‘magical era of rave culture’ in the heady and halcyon days of the early ‘90s, and contemplates how much has changed in the 25 years since - not just the scene and the music, but the lives of those involved. Cue mining of sonics from that era, a lush Banco de Gaia production update and a minor key melancholic feel that has gained early support since the release of the critically acclaimed album. On remix duty, Toby sought out two production outfits who would be able to understand his feelings for the bygone era and clock the ‘old skool' references, but at the same time deliver something 100% relevant to today's club scene. Roll up Mr. C - and frankly who better to fit the bill. He’s turned in an unmissable and appropriately retrospective deep house wiggler. Channeling his early ‘90s self, but with an ear to today’s true underground, he takes the acid lines from the original and twists up the vocals into a late-night groover that will delight any dance floor. Bennun and Healey’s genre-busting dub mix mashes up the melodies of the original, pays homage to its iconic acid sounds and in the breakdown even throws in an early ‘90s breakbeat for good measure. Then it’s fasten your seat-belts before all hell breaks loose with an absolute banger of a big bass line and 125 bpm 4/4 groove that’s guaranteed to energise. released March 17, 2017 Original written by Toby Marks and Sophie Barker

The remixes are in a similar vein, with Ornah-Mental providing a dubby worldbeat rerub and Andrew Heath a spacious pure ambient wash. released May 5, 2017 Original written and produced by Toby Marks

Tracklist: 01.Banco De Gaia - Ages of Gaia (7:28) At the end of July 2019, I was commissioned to make a track to celebrate the Lovelock Centenary conference held at the University of Exeter.
The conference brought together some of the top climate scientists and academics from around the world on the occasion of James Lovelock’s 100th birthday.
(He was the ‘inventor’ of the Gaia Hypothesis. And, yes, he was there and gave a fascinating talk). To make the piece I recorded the speeches and atmosphere of the event and then blended these found sounds with music to make something which I hoped would capture the essence of the event.
I also dragged along Patrick Dunn to make a video from the visual elements of the conference. It was an unusual and fascinating experience and everyone seemed really pleased with the results, and I'm very happy to share them with you too. released December 6, 2019
Tracklist: 01.Banco De Gaia - Floatless (4:55) I wrote this track before the current crisis had really taken off here in the UK. It was inspired by personal events last year but could equally well reflect what we are currently going through. Sometimes we are caught on tides we cannot resist.
We ride the currents, letting go of expectation.
In the end we emerge somewhere new. released June 19, 2020

Esbe) (5:34) Toby Marks of Banco de Gaia has had a bumpy couple of years, with family crises having to take priority over the making of music. Nevertheless this year was to be a respite from all that, with a major new album planned. Its November 2020 release would be accompanied by a string of UK and overseas live shows. Well, we can all guess what happened to that idea. As Allen Saunders said back in 1957, "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans". Nevertheless, Toby persevered and made music as and when he could, putting together five tracks which mark a decisive shift from previous Banco releases. Toby has recorded an EP which he describes as "a contemplative affair, full of contrasts of light and shade reflecting the turmoil in which it has been made. Largely beat-free, I hope it will bring a little light and peace to you in these troubled times." released November 6, 2020 All tracks written and produced by Toby Marks, except 'Kintsugi' which was written by Toby Marks and Esbe and produced by Toby Marks.

Many years later I was asked to contribute to the Outlaw Oceans project and thought this was a perfect subject for a track. As I don’t really do 70’s retro, apart from the odd prog rock cover, I decided to work the 70’s-style narrator’s voice into a retro 90’s sounding track. Sadly the initiative ran into complications and the release was pulled, but as I found it an amusing project to work on, I never gave up on the track, and my friend Simon Power, who was also knocking out dance tracks in the early 90’s as Marine Boy, fancied having a go at a remix and went suitably retro on it. Then, sticking with the 90’s theme, I asked Rog Bong from Children of the Bong, who toured with me a few times in that era, to have a go and he came up with a lovely deep dub of the track. I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as much as we have, or at least find the ridiculousness of it all entertaining! released November 3, 2023 Written and produced by Toby Marks
