Lackluster and his friends present this wonderful package of remixes taken from his recent 12” single (foc349). We decided not to go for the obvious big names to remix this music; instead we chose to work with artists in the same vein as Lackluster himself. We stumbled across Esa Ruoho via the WWW, as that is where he had released his music via mp3. There is a generation of music makers that don’t see commercial releases as playing an important role in their career. Instead they see mp3’s as a way of letting people hear their music and that is what is important to them. BrothomStates (Lassi Nikko) is of the same like mind although he has released the odd track on selected compilations. He has been writing music seriously for 12 years and only in the past two years has he bought some electronic gear. Bauri (Martin Abrahamsson) handed in a very Metamatics sounding mix of Cull Streak, and since he has been writing music for 7 years, has managed to line up a release with City Centre Offices. Xhale (Erik Skodvin) makes his debut with this; an old school Autechre approach to ‘Meanwhile’. Sense (Adam Raisbeck) went all out for minimal beauty! Adam lives in Australia and is hoping to release a project with Jeff Mills for Axis! All together these mixes make for a chilled summers evening listen. It was a pivotal time for undergound electronic music generally and one where the power base was noticably moving away from the centre towards ever more remote corners of the globe. Back then, the tectonic plates were shifting in dramatic fashion. A new order was on the rise with self-sufficient producers beginning to reap the rewards of the DIY boom. There was a flurry of activity undergrond and an explosion of new stars above it. Lights were going on all over the place. The bedroom soldiers were finally bringing the heat in earnest, using new fangled software to bypass the studio system entirely. The power was shifting back to the individual and a quiet revolution was brewing. The possibilities seemed endless. Suddenly, up pops Finland on the dial and out pours the mesmerising sound of Lackluster and the album Container. What a beautiful noise to behold. It resonated with a gentle softness pre- viously unheard. Here was an example of how the understated could be reconfigured to pack quite a punch. Ruoho crafted something fresh and original from generic music-production home-computer software. Despite appearances, this wasn’t easy. The easier it is to make noise, the harder it get’s to come up with a truly original sound, but Ruoho managed with aplomb. The source of Container was no surprise. There was a huge spike in the volume of electronic music coming from the colder corners of the Scandanavian north at that particular point. By the time Container was released at the turn of the millenium the Northern Lights were outshining almost everyone. Lackluster’s music stood out so effervescently you could nearly say it glowed. It’s a message worth getting." -Donal Dineen, Irish Times "Awesome music you may have missed. Right off the bat, 'Cut1' comes out with a tremendously complex blend of Lackluster's signature smooth melodies, with a newer, almost dubby edge, before the languid 'Ambling On' shows off rocksteady beats and a drifting, just gorgeous lead. Up next, 'Cut2' sneaks up with analmost 'CDR#2' or 'Container'-like simplicity of spirit and purity of thought, before 'Tumbling Around' shows up, all perfect drum programming and lolloping breaks. Finally, 'Ender' ends things off subtly with reversed sounding loops and a humming bass, a fitting finish to a simply beautiful EP that Monotonik is proud to be releasing. released October 7, 2003 More information: AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Label/Cat#: Merck – MERCK RU

Subvert (4:36) Total length: 53:26 Textura Review: Working from his flat in the nation's capital Helsinki, Finnish electronic composer Esa Ruoho is nothing if not prolific. Having issued hundreds of tracks over the years for labels like Defocus and Merck, Ruoho added two full-lengths to his discography in 2005: What You Want Isn't What You Need (New Speak), a collection of material spanning 1996 and 2003, and Slice, his fifth full-length and first release on Belgium label U-cover since Spaces four years ago. The music's wholly electronic character avoids sounding hermetic by the range of moods and textures explored within the disc's thirteen songs, whether it's placid pools of melancholy (“Clover”) or gleaming cathedrals (“Wallow”). Not surprisingly, the subtly percolating “Zithertrak2” brings a brooding Far East ambiance to the set while electronic music rarely sounds as sweet and tender as it does on the lovely “Hugytrak.” There's nary a speck of grime dirtying up Lackluster's gleaming IDM, though a sparkling bounce animates “Touches” and bubbly, Plaid-like beats stream throughout “Wash”; there's certainly nothing lackluster about the Latin-tinged romp “Tumbling Around” and the hazy head-nodder “Subvert.” Much like What You Want Isn't What You Need, the melancholic, soulful sound Lackluster conjures on Slice may not be revolutionary yet nonetheless offers a generous dose of listening pleasure. Igloomag Review: U-Cover have really been cutting the mustard with many of their recent releases: albums from Sense, Multiplex, Kettel and Quench among them. One of two Lackuster albums to be released in the latter half of 2005 (the other being the collection of archive material released on the Newspeak label) Slice happily joins their number in surprisingly upbeat style. Compared to previous works by Ruoho, Slice exudes an uncharacteristically cheery pop sensibility that frequently engulfs his oft used melancholia. That is not to say that previous Lackluster material was pre-disposed to be mournful or depressing, merely that Slice is more emphatically optimistic. Or is that simply an illusion created by the tone-setting album opener “Tumbling Around,” a bright and playfully simple candy-colored melodic hook joined by tumbling, rolling drum patterns? There’s often something tantalizing familiar about Lackluster’s sonic palette and in the case of the dramatic “Wash” it is the approachable choice of textures that offset the skittish percussion and general mood of nervousness and unease. “Wallow” follows this pattern too; layers of addictively unclosed, looped melodies intertwining relentlessly with a hook that Lackluster can only terminate by drowning the synths in swathes of jumbled ZX-Spectrum loading noise. This has to be one of Lackluster’s most compelling pieces to date. There are shades of Container in pieces like “Clover” as droplets of glowing neon synth tones blossom and burst amidst half muted percussion, while what may be influences from Orbital are evident in the splashes of “Touches” and the gothic “Zithertrak2.” Like “Wallow,” “Iniquity” expertly blends together dry, clonking percussion with scattershot and skittish waves of infectious melodic hooks. The moods that appear on Lackluster albums are nothing if not eclectic, and just when this overall feeling of unease seems ready to characterize Slice, along comes the cuddly warmth of the loping “Hugytrak.” And if that doesn’t work for you, “Ender” and “Subvert” offer two further diverse styles to close out the album, the former a vibrating mass of highly charged, fizzy synths and chattering fx, the latter a cold and almost disturbing looped hip-hop beat underpinning foggy ambience and a heavily distorted sermon, the dialogue of which is too hard to make out most of the time. Meandering missteps like “Meanie” or “Plastic 1″ aside, this is a splendid collection of optimistic and yet bracingly autumnal electronic pop moments that drive the Lackluster sound in a new and infectious direction. The mixing is bold, confident and bracing, the melodies alternately uplifting and thought-provoking and the sound palette typically rich and varied. Slice is quite possibly the finest and most consistent Lackluster work to date. Highly recommended. released 22 August 2005 More information: AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Tracklist:
1. Zero Million Barrels of Oil Per Day (09:52) Total length: 09:52 When Finnish-born, currently Irish-based idm veteran Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, insistently pinged us over IM to release this stunning single track, ‘Zero Million Barrels Of Oil Per Day’, he was keen that it go live before the global oil market reached its peak. We’re not sure we actually managed that, but heck, we figure this almost 10-minute track will convey its mood perfectly well, separately of the amount of crude bubbling out of the ground at any particular speed. Esa’s official site reveals what he’s been up to since last releasing on Monotonik early last year, and it includes a new album, ‘Slice’, on excellent Belgian label U-Cover, as well as recent live gigs in Holland, Spain, France, and Dublin, as well as a forthcoming spot this November at the lab30 mini-festival in Augsburg, Germany. So, what of ‘Zero Million Barrels Of Oil Per Day’? Well, it starts soft, with almost imperceptible shifts in mood, before blasting into life and color, sonic earthquakes and melodic gushers to the fore. If anyone can refine pure noise into beauty, it’s Lackluster, and this carefully crafted track does just that. Dropouts (1:54) Total length: 36:55 Making his debut here for New Speak, Esa Ruoho has been a regular protagonist in the contemporary IDM scene. Esa has always managed to describe icy landscaps with melodic fragments that quickly thaw the rigid construction - something he does here with renewed determination. "Hiatus" permits tinder-box harmonies and a lumpy, tannine, heavy brew of beats to accrete, while "Down" seems to enter a parallel David Lynchian world, where Badalmenti has settled on the most pared down arrangements of his career, troubled by digital interventions. "N" resolves this dilemma in open-hearted, broadly euphoric fashion, a reconciled and contented mood, which is allowed to subsist inside "Sizehoay"s core. "The Cluster Theme" dallies with a darker palette again, rotating around a subterranean 4/4 while deceptive childs-play keys soften the blow - delighting in roughing the rhythm then smoothing it with those icey melodies. "Dropouts", finally, rounds up proceedings with ritalin beats, artificially accelerated, drum and ominous bass viewed from the other end of a telescope. Very good indeed. released 05 October 2005 More information: AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Tracklist:

Legend Lackluster's 16th release and first release on Soulseek's "SLSK Records" label. Since 1997 Lackluster has been creating inspirational I.D.M., starting with his roots in tracker and chip-tunes, growing ever more sophisticated in his musical aesthetic. "Repulsine" is Lackluster's newest offering; a 6 song EP, it is a combination of unreleased older tracks written specifically for this release. While the title "Repulsine" may just sound like a play on words, the origins of the title for this EP go much deeper than a mere calembour. Inspired by the writings of the visionary thinker Viktor Schauberger, "Repulsine" is an ode to water in its myriad forms. Schauberger's core idea was that life is sustained by a gathering, inwards type of movement; the Repulsine was his way of physically manifesting this theory. A Repulsine is a machine that mimics the methods of nature; it creates energy by encouraging a centripetal, inwardly spiraling movement of water or air. Absolute straight lines are rarely a natural occurrence; therefore the Repulsine mimics the curved lines that are the mainstay of our natural environment. Lackluster (a.k.a. Esa Ruoho) says; "The strands of thought expressed by Viktor Schauberger about water made my intuition resonate with recognition about the reality and truth of Schauberger's glimpses into nature's inner workings; it made me sit up and take note. This led me on a search that is far from finished, but which has currently resulted in my homage to Schauberger, water, and implosion." Although Esa Ruoho is a native of Finland, each track on "Repulsine" was composed while Esa was far away from home, under the influence of the beauty of his natural surroundings. Rothe Abbey, Ireland, Shoreditch, England, and Regina, in Saskatchewan, Canada all helped to fuel Esa's creative flow. Esa explains further; "I suppose I compiled these songs because I wanted it to be a happy, cheerful, joyful, simple, and frank EP which is reaching towards the day that the "Utopian" thoughts of Schauberger, Tesla, Reich, Buckminster Fuller, etc. will be accepted as a reality, and are seen put to use, instead of the mess the world is in at the moment." Lackluster delivers his point of view in a most stunning manner; spinning, spiraling vortexes of sound, growing and sweeping heavenward, wash over and through you. Sparkling transcendent melodies can move you through your day or give you space to daydream in. Each song unfolds gracefully, with layer upon layer being added or peeled away, enveloping the listener in a complete aural experience. Lackluster has dug deep into the collective unconscious and offers up something we can all connect with; the beauty and wonder of our natural external reality, the thing that so often we have lost touch with. 'One of a kind' is the expression which best describes the Finnish electronic music auteur Esa Ruoho, regardless whether we are talking about the organic quality of his music under the artist name Lackluster or just the artist himself in his private life. Esa Ruoho is truly an original; a homegrown and uncompromising composer and an eccentric explorer of science and nature. The Cold Trail EP is Esa at his melodic best. Label: Nice & Nasty Catalog#: NANO106 Format: Digital Tracklist: 01. Detro (5:08) 02. Swollen (7:31) 03. Maze (8:10) 04. LL200105B (7:16) Lackluster is a native of Finland; however, his association with Ireland is strong. In the 2000s Esa Ruoho aka Lackluster lived in Ireland where he released music for mightly labels like Merck and deFocus. His live sets in the Irish techno scene brought him both attention and acclaim and he hooked up with Dublin ambient label Psychonavigation. It was his remix of Sitting Pretty for Manta that inspired Desy Balmer to sign Lackluster up to Nice & Nasty. The Detro EP is a collection of Four uncompromising trax that fuse anti-rhythm, detuned melody, abstract beats and deep nasty funk. Lackluster displays elements of Minimal techno, dubstep and Detroit techno but in fairness Lackluster and his music is unique and more at home with the Sheffield bleep scene of the early 1990s without losing its place in modern music. As you can tell from the waffle here it is difficult to pigeonhole Lackluster and describe his music using standard vocabulary and grammar as the only way to describe it would be to recreate language for that specific purpose. Lackluster has two rare gem remixes of the debut hit from Nice & Nasty, Bolivian Angel by Ubiquity which is only available on a limited promo CD; however, subsequent remixes for Heretics of Disko, Spearchukka, Tomi Chair and Mick Chillage paved the way for his debut release on Nice & Nasty, Detro. Bizarre as it seems, Detro EP that features 4 original pieces of electronica is released after the remix EP of the eponymous track by Birdcage, Numerical and Nachklangmusik & remlaB. The Detro EP is made up of four brain shaking pieces of techno http://www.lackluster.org/releases/nano106 AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Tracklist:

Here, Esa joins the already intriguing roster in the Zealectronicseries, alongside the like-minded personalities of Syabrite, L’usine icl, Lillienthal, and Languis. Drawing from his love of C64 and Amiga game soundtracks, Lackluster has proclaimed his abilities many times, appearing on compilations for such labels as Autumn, Surgery, Neferiu, Kracfive, and Merck. Here, Esa offers us two tracks, in two different moods. “27/11/99 (Tweeble)” releases subtle surges of resonance, soon joined by warm, hollow tones and minimal echoing effects. Non-intrusive beats pat down the gentle groove, as tepid basslines roll toward a conclusion. Analog computer patterns weave ceremoniously in the backdrop as “19/10/00 (Beeble)” introduces side b. Slick and clear beats bubble and surge along a thudding kick while a beautiful, struggling melody plays infectiously along. Elements of the song begin to warp and deteriorate as this alluring tune humbly concludes. This Zealectronic installment is another interesting and communicable effort from this promising Finnish composer. The first track was released on their debut compilation V/A: Psychokinesis (with Mr. Projectile, Buckminster Fuzeboard and p.p.roy as highlights), the third on Manta's nice little "Head Movement" EP, the fourth on the star-studded remix-album "Remaking the Pearl" (with The Irresistible Force, Richard H. Kirk, Gocat and Multiplex amongst so many others).. The fifth tune? Psychonavigation put out a small slice of rap in the case of the rare-to-obscure Brawdcast "3 Amigos Ep", with fellow contemporaries Cuttooth and Anodyne - but also the Lackluster remix you might have never even heard. And let us never forget the massive Anodyne Remixes 12" Ep with the whole A-side covered by The Black Dog, and the B-side split (but it was a friendly divide) between Autechre and Lackluster. Oh, and then there was a massive compilation, that in digital form introduced us to a selection of 22 tracks - from such names as Norken, Move D, Mick Chillage, Gel-Sol, Spacetime Continuum.. and.. The Future Sound of London. Yep, call it V/A: Mindfield. I was proud to be a part of every single one of these compilations / remix releases, and now they are presented here for posterity. They are not available via Psychonavigation anymore, so here you go, collectors and fans of the Dublin sound! This release is for collectors only. These are the tunes released by Psychonavigation Records between 2002 and 2011. It was a nice slice of history, good-to-great memories, a good experience, and now the door is closed and it's time to move on. released September 9, 2015 More information: AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Tracklist:

Ruby reached out to me after we worked together for the "Anomalous Effects in Deuterated Systems - Melvin Miles: The correlation of Excess Heat and Helium - the Navy LENR Research Series" documentary (you can view it at youtube.com/watch?v=KM82RW7_II4 ) and requested original music for the new documentary. She also sent over the footage of her interviews with Edmund Storms for Hydroton, and I got down to working on the music. We were able to reach a rapport as to how the tracks could sound like and the general feel, and within the space of a couple of months had the soundtrack down and ready to be placed into the documentary. There's a bit of gear involved in this, and software - but the gear-list is pretty simplistic: Clavia Nord MicroModular, Roland D-2 Groovebox, Pure Data, Ableton Live and the Faderfox UC-4 midi-controller. 1. Riversmouth (20:43) Total length: 20:43 "Finnish musician Esa Ruoho has been releasing experimental techno for about a decade, mainly under the name Lackluster. His real name is reserved for the more abstract, less rhythmical side of his work in electronic music. "Riversmouth", his first release on Attenuation Circuit, is a perfect example of this. There are no beats, but lots of things happening in terms of shifting shapes of granular textures, high-frequency oscillations working against seismic trembles in the lower bass regions, and then the occasional hauntological voice-like overtone structures. Full of harmonic tension, but never noisy, this release might appeal to fans of Asmus Tietchens, Alva Noto and other Mille Plateaux acts, or even Phill Niblock. Within the Attenuation Circuit catalogue, Esa Ruoho's release provides an exciting new take on the drone/ambient borderland also inhabited by EMERGE, B*tong, Sghor, Mystified, and Sustained Development." released 01 December 2011 More information: AUDIOCHECKER v2.0 beta (build 457) - by Dester - opdester@freemail.hu foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Tracklist:

Terra (5:10) Total length: 01:17:36 "On The Hangar of Spaceship Earth" is the 3rd full-length album by Esa Ruoho, an ambient-drone artist hailing from Kontula, Eastern-Helsinki, Finland. While Esa might be more known via his other moniker, Lackluster, we're sure you agree that this is a different take, a departure from the more melodic material released as Lackluster. What is a Spaceship Earth? R. Buckminster Fuller wrote and published a book called "Operation Manual for Spaceship Earth" back in 1968. Bucky would also go on to provide us with a simple ultimatum: "We are not going to be able to operate our Spaceship Earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. It has to be everybody or nobody." What is the tower? Nikola Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tesla Wireless World System tower, envisioned at the end of the 1800s, providing wireless electricity and information transfer throughout the planet, without any delay or latency. Ideal for musicians and for everyone on this planet. Our hand-held devices will eventually charge and communicate through these types of towers based on Tesla's discoveries - the time is coming, move over Wi-Fi, Li-Fi, 3G, LTE, Bluetooth.. Happy birthday, Nikola Tesla. What is the brain? Is it just a stock-photo off the web? Nope, it is real. 1. Parched Throat (01:11:04) Total length: 01:11:04 In the electro-dance track “Empire of Dust” by Anodyne, dust is just a word in the title. But in Esa Ruoho’s remix of that track, which is released here, you can really hear, feel and taste the dust settling everywhere. This is why “Parched Throat” is a perfect title for this rework. Instead of some seven minutes like the original, the rework by Finnish composer-producer Esa Ruoho aka Lackluster lasts well over an hour. Everything that used to be beats and melodies has been pulverised into drifting audio grit, sheets of hiss covering the dunes of harmonics that are left over from extensive time-stretching operations performed on the previous material. Esa Ruoho does to the original track what time and desert climate have done to the monuments of ancient cultures – he erodes them, only to eventually take the role of the archaeologist and uncover some fragments that are beautiful in their own right. 1. Avaruusromua Special 2016 (25:12) Total length: 25:12 Composed originally for Jukka Mikkola's legendary Avaruusromua -radio show in Finland, here you can hear it in full. Comprising of a Tesla Model S, a basement, a car garage, an elevator, frozen door-code-input-system, Cold Fusion experimental devices, free energy experimental devices, ice creaking, room ventilation, electromagnetic fields and so on, there's a little bit for everyone. released January 13, 2019 all sounds recorded, processed and put together by Esa Ruoho using Ableton Live, Renoise and multiple other apps and processing methods. It's possible you were never aware of this pseudonym and thus never heard the choons. released February 2, 2003 Esa Ruoho More information: ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Heikki Lindgren & Esa Ruoho HLER combines the initials of Heikki Lindgren and Esa Ruoho. It also describes the improvisational creative process of this ambient drone duo from Finland. A couple of years ago, Heikki came across a second-hand Peruvian synthesiser. The machine quickly revealed its potential for endless sonic creativity, mainly because Heikki found it almost impossible to recreate the exact same sound twice. He soon introduced the machine to Esa, and together they decided to explore the machine's inherent sonic instability in a live setting. Each performance follows the same creative process, but with wildly different results every time. Digging in to the Mochika XL's front panel, Heikki begins mining for sound. Esa then processes Heikki's discoveries through his laptop, revealing hitherto undiscovered facets to Heikki's freshly unearthed sonic gems. Then, with the twist of a dial, Heikki introduces something new to Esa, and the whole process continues onwards and upwards. "We are always surprised by the spaces we find ourselves in, and the directions the sounds take during a performance. We cannot repeat anything in exactly the same way, even if we wanted to! Just turning the Mochika XL synthesiser off and back on, keeping all of the knobs untouched in exactly the same position, leads to a changed sound." "It has been incredibly rewarding to work as a duo, as the unpredictability of the creative process is so refreshing. Thanks to the unstable nature of the Mochika XL synthesiser and the intuitiveness of Esa’s live processing, each performance is unique. The whole live situation is based on improvisation and the sonic discoveries extracted during the encounter." File under: organised improvised noise, clicks, hums, drone, "Hey, this sounds kind of like space music from the '70s!", a captured submarine humming in the hangar of a space station, "Are you sure you guys are alright and that the cables work?"
