David Douglas (1799) was a Scottish plant hunter who explored North America collecting seeds of plants and trees unknown to mankind at that time. Inspired by the Scottish botanist, David from ’83 started looking for his own musical roots. The greatness of nature – the sublime mountain landscapes, Icelandic lupine fields, arctic coastlines, Californian fir forests – invigorate his music. “Royal Horticultural Society” is David’s debut EP although it sounds like anything other than a debut. His music can be described as warm, playful, analog, adventurous, diverse and pure. Both Harm and Merijn have roots in the filming industry, which is also where they met in 2010. When they found out they were sharing the same love and ambition for creating electronic music they decided to team up as a producers duo. Merijns background is more triphop and rock orientated, Harm is influenced by jazz and house music. Because of their different backgrounds they blend the best of these genres together in their combined work. The 'Half Age EP' is Weval's debut release. Opening track 'Out of The Game' has anthem like potential, combining hypnotizing vocals with a deep climax and a haunting vibe. The other tracks are no less impressive but gradually move more towards the dancefloor. Their main source of inspiration is the vast, snow covered woodlands of the North. They have for instance recorded all of their percussions in the forest, using only the sticks and rocks that can be found there. Gidge are currently located in Paris, where they have been developing their live performance for the last six months or so. ’For Seoul’ came about after the duo went on a trip through Asia, and spent a number of days in the South Korean capital. A key player in that scene has been Alexander Tochilkin, who's been part of Fuselab, one of Russia's finest labels. Tochilikin has moved through a number of ensembles as well since 2005, including Feldmaus, Modul and Wols. Since 2013, Tochilkin is releasing music for his new solo project: Koett. Koett can be described as jazzy, cinematic, acoustic yet very analog and electronic. It is actually very house influenced as well, but not in a way it is done before. We'd like to say Koett sounds as surreal as the artwork of looks, created by Alex Coll. "Lost Time" is the single of Koett's forthcoming album "Golden Peak", which is scheduled to release in November. A fantastic full length album filled with music of Tochilkin's surrealistic style. But first the single. Koett - That's Stuart (3:53) From ambient interludes that could soundtrack a short film, to lively acid jazz all the way through to spacious funk and introspective yet soulful, techno inspired workouts, Koett (who’s real name is Aleksander Tochilkin) deftly weaves through the gamut of electronic machine music. Having released under a number of names between 2005 and 2012 and following strong house and techno releases on FUSELab and Dabit Records, Koett has pinned down his sound for his ‘Golden Peak’ album, creating a cogent record that drips with creativity. “Golden Peak” once more serves as reminder that the Russian music scene is alive and kicking and with fellow countrymen Pixelord, Monokle and DZA already flying the flag for a scene it is not a stretch of the imagination to believe we will be hearing a lot more emerge from the mega state in the coming years. The artwork for the release is by Alex Coll, a surrealistic artist that utilizes the medium of collage to create his posters and works. From minimal leanings seen on his releases for German label Traum, through to the pastoral electronica seen on his Atomnation releases, abstract ‘non-glitch’ IDM, bouncy brain-dance and more. Peppering his tunes with shades of Aphex Twin, Radiohead and even naïve 80s style electronics, the Dutch producer manages to wring emotion from the barest of elements, with his tracks travelling through the gamut of emotions from sadness through to uplifting happiness. David’s single has been remixed by two fellow Dutch artists, Weval and Mattheis, and by UK producer Throwing Snow. Weval previously released their Half Age EP on Atomnation. Mattheis, a new face to the label, has already released some impressive material including “Isms”, an EP hailed by DJ’s such as John Talabot, James Holden and Steffen Bennemann. Applescal - Dozen People (5:26) Contrary to many of his past releases, Pascal Terstappen’s latest offering as Applescal blends his melodic approach to electronic music with a number of peculiar samples. Referencing what he refers to as “world music” and “meditation music” in these samples, many of the works on Mirage are of a distinctly Eastern flavour. Noting himself that “sometimes you have to change the way you make music to keep things interesting,” Applescal’s five original tracks on Mirage are created through a different approach than much of his previous work. “The Veil” laces Terstappen’s dance floor tendencies with odd, meditative female vocals, creating a dark and brooding work of heavy melodic techno that blends moody pads and a huge stuttering lead with his vocal manipulations. A definite highlight of the EP, though, is the more understated sound of “Drowning Souls,” which evokes a similar emotion to Tensnake’s brilliant “The Then Unkown,” but takes the listener on an abstract journey guided by more introspective, and less optimistic, melodies. Applescal’s consistent efforts to challenge himself creatively have resulted in the young Dutch artist slowly morphing his sound from traditional melodic techno into more experimental electronic music; and for that, the Mirage EP is a commendable effort. It’s his second full length as Portable Sunsets – first LP “Mercy” came out in 2012 on Magical Properties, Deadelus’ label. As a MAX/MSP nerd he went to teach at Steim Amsterdam (an independent Dutch electronic music centre and nexus for live an innovative performance of electronic music) and helped set up the musical accompaniment for an art installation at festival Némo in Paris, amongst many other projects. New album “Bless” is an 11-track record produced in a NYC winter. Floating somewhere between crystal sharp warehouse techno and ancient blurry faded love songs, Portable Sunsets album could be a technological visionquest sound track. Basically, he makes ambient music with club-ready drums on top. He has seemingly soaked up the sunset hip-hop vibes of his birth town (California) and combined that aesthetic with an European techno vibe or even more, the “lo-fi tape experimental house” style represented by labels such as Opal Tapes and L.I.E.S. Though very much representing a unique style and lots of music technology in his productions, Peter often uses his own voice in his productions – programmed through self created synths in MAX/MSP till the vocal texture becomes more a synth or pad or soundscape. Tracks like “Straylight” and “rm –R” are nice examples of this. “rm –R” could easily be one of the soundtracks created for the “Her” film by Arcade Fire. While tracks like “Pearl”, “Ledges” and “Crosby” are more up-tempo songs with a driving beat and diversity in the synth lines. As a whole, the album tells a story. Usually, a film comes with a soundtrack and an album comes with music videos, but Gidge and Lampray wanted to make something different: a project where film and music are separated, yet strongly connected. The idea behind the Lulin project started six years ago with a noise on the roof and subtle creaking in the walls. It was an autumn night, and Ludvig was currently living alone in the old bakers cabin on his mother’s farm. The strange noises frightened him, but he was all alone and simply had to deal with it. If you see or hear something that is unexplainable, and you have no one there to share it with – what do you do? This slowly grew into an idea, and a mystical being called Lulin. This resulted in a 24-minute film & 42 minutes of audio. The film revolves around a man (played by Victor Lindgren) who sees something he cannot explain at the edge of the woods surrounding his cabin. The audio is two 20+ minute tracks by Gidge with music derived from Lulin’s lonely world and mind. ‘Lulin’ is filmed close to Umeå, and more specifically, right where Gidge recorded most of the sounds of their debut album ‘Autumn Bells’. However, this year also seemed to be one of the most disturbing ones in living memory. Topics such as war, discrimination, mass migration and terror are dominating the news and we're not even aware of many other terrible events. People are murdered on the streets and have been forced from their homes. There's hunger, thirst and poverty. We have the feeling things have to change more than ever. We decided, because of reasons above mentioned and in conversation with our artists / team, that all revenue of our yearly Atomnation Compilation will be donated to the Red Cross. The Red Cross is a charity that helps people in conflict zones - they protect civilians by providing food, life-saving support and addressing matters of sexual assault. The main reason why we support the Red Cross is because they act independently, at places that need it the most and without excluding anyone. We realise that our effort is only a small step towards what should happen to make the world a liveable place. It's actually kind of scary that it seems almost impossible to make a difference as an individual in this case. But this cannot be used as an argument to do nothing. It’s time to stop saying ‘hey, this sucks’ and going back to everyday routines. We must do more. That being said, there is also good in this world and we shouldn't forget that. You decide to trek on, but you must keep standing under these falls. You reach the cliff you’ve been searching for. Tribal drums and foreign flutes trap your vision but you are the Last Minute Man who has been destined to figure out what all of this means. You take a break and fall into a deep sleep. Systematic, deep acid controls your thoughts now. The wind brushes past your face and you know you’re that man now. It’s becoming more of a ritual now. A hollow item is tapped on to get this tube-like sound that will stay in your memory for many fortnights to come. Though the wav-lengths of this track stay in equal flow, this is an absolute hidden gem exposed by the absurdity of Man. Having by now gathered enough strength to welcome the Power of Resonance, you see the beach. It’s quite, but the energy cannot be doubted. Step off your Ostrich now, close your eyes and spread your arms to catch momentary reason. Because why are you here, Mr. Last Minute Man? Both artists make their first appearance on the Dutch imprint. boys be kko started producing music during high school when buying the KORG Elektribe. Quickly after, he signed up for art college. His interest in techno music grew while listening to artists such as Gui Boratto. Making connections all over the Tokyo scene the years after, he co-founded Kids Return with Hiroki Nakamura (DJ). Kids Return is a collective that runs a record label, throws parties and is a design studio (that also produced this Big Boys Don't Cry EP artwork) - a collaboration with Hiroki Kato (PLUSTIC) and Mitsuru Nishimura. Gear plays an important part in Ryunosuke's tracks. The Roland SH-101, Prophet600 and VERMONA PERfourMER Mk2 are signatures in his sound. This is exactly what you hear back in his track Big Boys Don't Cry which can be described as a beautiful emotive track, influenced by disco, house and the current melodic-techno hype. That being said, his music (and this title track in specific) meander through all these genres at the same time, finding a very unique, original and soulfully balanced sound as a result. All tracks are written and produced at Ryunosuke's rooftop studio in Narimasu. For the people that haven't been to Tokyo, it's a small station of the Fukutoshin Line. The FUMIKIRI track that's written there is tribal influenced and sounding close to the output Keinemusik is known for at the moment. Her debut EP Open Door was “clean and angelic” according to Uproxx, “soothing, sweet, marvelously refreshing” by New Retro Wave, and “a glimpse into a kinder, more gentle future” by Queen City Sounds and Art. Her follow-up EP, At the Seams is a gleaming example of an artist on her way, a sonic Bildungsroman, if you will. A work of searching, and in many moments, finding. The EP showcases six dance-floor-friendly, cross genre tracks, each with a signature sound. Opening track Don’t Call Me Back features salty lyrics, muted Rhodes atop gritty and distorted bongo loops. The second track, Smile, is the first hint at a more dance-floor focused future for Sky Civilian. Hers is hollow and melancholic, with drooping synths propped-up by a blunt kick and a de-facto acid riff. The most sure-footed moment in the EP comes with the track Otherworld, which features fat loops, a sparkling acid backdrop and seraphic, beckoning vocals. This moment of levity is abruptly ended by Where is that Good Energy Lurking, with its caustic percussion and bed of crackling orchestral strings underneath clear-as-day brass. Closing track Lullaby is sweet but not sleepy, at 140 bmp, with swinging sawtooth synths, cowbells, and stuttering, confessional vocals. Maggie’s cinematic, synth-heavy style emerged after a decade of orchestral French horn playing and classical studies. She combines this brass-inspired, synth-forward approach with her weightless, almost-whispered vocals, and dance-floor ready beats. Ramses3000 - Libi (5:54) On the first of May, Dutch DJ and producer Yannick Verhoeven releases “Ataraxia,” his debut EP as Ramses3000. A cutting-edge melting pot of eclectic electronic influences and outer-national vibes, these six tracks form a bold and vibrant opening statement and display a seemingly limitless creative voice. While tracks Libi and Terra Incognita find their origins in club music and percussional house, Verhoeven's special talent for genre-blending is especially evident in his interweaving of afro-dub into the down-tempo title track, and in his two stellar collaborations with Sierra Leonean rappers Mash P and Vinel. “Ataraxia” is a Greek term which roughly translates to “a state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety,” and it was out of this state that these six tracks were conceived; the creation process tied to an acute awareness of transience and an appreciation for the “here and now.” One of Verhoeven's most cherished moments of ataraxia was actually captured here on the tracks Komotte and Gbana, cut during an extended visit to Way Out Studios in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. As Verhoeven had become more involved with musical developments outside the so-called “Western World,” the desire arose to actually visit these places to witness this shift of global music with his own eyes and ears. But already Verhoeven has built a serious reputation for himself under the Ramses3000 moniker by bringing international discoveries like these to Dutch dance-floors, including at high-profile festivals like Lowlands, Le Guess Who?, and Amsterdam Dance Event. His group Cairo Liberation Front has helped introduce the sounds of Egyptian electro-cha3bi music to Europe, and with Eurabia, his curated club nights, he's giving contemporary Arab electronic artists an over-ground platform in the Netherlands. Ineffekt’s first exposition as DJ was in Utrecht, where he gained recognition for his gloomy and trippy sets and soon he began to pick up more gigs around The Netherlands (Basis in Utrecht, Bret, and Radion in Amsterdam and Doornroosje in Nijmegen among others) and developed a broader interest in combining different musical forms, a fascination that never ends for him. Ineffekt's debut is out on Intercept Records on May 8th. Opener Broken Dreams starts off rough, with a non 4/4 beat and a driving bassline that takes you straight into rave territory. B-side Solaris does the opposite. With its expressive vocal pads and dreamlike melodies, it’s a track that’ll surely bring the listener to a melancholic euphoria. This euphoria is further emphasized in the ‘Empties Our Souls’ version of the track, where the drums are stripped to reveal even more of its ambient backbone. released May 8, 2020
