Foremost, it's my first release with Cheapbeats AND my first ever official release! "Oodles Des Strudels" is also an EP born out of my decade and a half old affinity for ska. I consider this my chiptune love letter to the genre that propelled me through high school and beyond. Most importantly, this EP is a sort of progress bar showcasing my evolving skill as an artist. In fact, these tracks are in chronological order from oldest to newest, spanning over 3 years of working with Famitracker. When I initially conceptualized this EP I briefly considered revisiting and revising the older tracks but decided instead to preserve their original states to serve as a stark contrast against my future endeavors; to immortalize my humble beginnings. The aim of each of these tracks was to evoke the performance and writing style of a few of my favorite ska bands. He is one of if not THE core member of the Australian chipmusic scene and absolutely dedicated to spreading good music and good times.

The NES soundtrack was created with the FamiTone driver, and all songs/sound effects/jingles had to fit in under 7 KB of ROM.
Also included are SNES versions of the songs, which were made in snesmod and are all single-load SPC compatible. 5 KB of SPC RAM was left free for theoretical sound effects. Hope you enjoy! Only slight mixing was performed at after exporting the music from the app. The album is a play on the use of "prime", numerically and audibly. The concept art was the joint brainchild of Gesceap and 2xAA.
All cover art is based around the ubiquitous interface of nanoloop, the four by four grid of sixteen squares.
Afterwhich, each square represents an increasing fully connected graph, sometimes called a mystic rose.
These basic circular shapes were the basis for the video for "Cicl" showcasing 2xAA's modV audio visualisation application Big thanks to 2xAA for the wonderful collaboration, it was truly an experience.
In addition, a big thanks to The Centre for Computing History in Cambridge, who allowed us to use the CRTs to create the video.

Closing CheapBeats
I’d like to say sorry to the artists and fans first of all. Sorry for suddenly closing the label. Now is the time for me to step out of the scene. I have caused enough trouble, I do not want to spread that image onto any of the artists that released with me.
The vision of the label, from the start, was to introduce Japanese chiptune to the world and vice versa. This was due to the unique position of me, James, as an England-born Japanese resident. It took a lot of work, but the label was successful in releasing some of the worlds best chiptune artists. I’m very proud to have worked with such amazing people.
At first, I would reach out to people I knew to release their music with us. Following that, as I learnt more about the scene, I hear new music on Soundcloud or Bandcamp and invite these artists to release with us. It got to a point where I didn’t actively seek out people to release with us anymore as we would get demos, listen to them internally and then release what I thought matched the label’s aesthetic, or what I found interesting. People that sent demos were added to the CB line up based on their music only. I have never invited anybody, judged or judged a demo based on race or gender, however, in hindsight, I could have done more to search for artists of various minorities. I regret not knowing that the label was considered unapproachable to such artists.
I also admit that I have overlooked some things. There were incidents with particular releases containing inappropriate lyrics, which did not occur to me or the artist at the time, and I have booked people for events without considering the thoughts and feelings of victims. I apologize for this. I did not fully consider the people who have been discriminated against.
Regarding the recent CB and Friends concert, I tried to make the best event I could. Of course, a big push for this event was to be as inclusive as possible. It’s a free, online concert, I wanted it to be as open and representative of the scene as possible. I invited a number of non-male artists to play from within Japan and overseas. However, it was pointed out to me that there was one member on the lineup had made inappropriate things towards others, so I decided to try and sort this problem out myself. At the time, the offending artist said that he had made mistakes in the past, regrets saying hurtful things and did not mean what he said. I relayed this to the victim, who accepted it with a feeling of not wanting to cancel anyone but still a bit dubious, which is of course very fair. However, thinking about it now, I think I did too much to stick up for this artist. They should have apologised directly, which I don’t think has happened. I got caught up in trying to play peacekeeper. I should have considered the words of the victims more.
There are probably ill-informed actions and mistakes that I have made as well as the above, but my intentions were never to hurt anyone, only to make the scene better.
