As a bass player, for the rockband Cirko Vulkano, Aldo toured all over the American continent. It was early 2010 when he started the experimental solo project Drafter; heavily inspired by the Low End Theory podcasts andhis love for synths. After many years of playing live with bands and thinking about the audience reaction it was a relief for him to make more introspective music without worrying about styles and/or feedback from the crowd. Lamanna describes Drafter as experimental music based on pounding synthesized beats and low end frequency (ab)use. As a Venezuelan citizen it’s hard for Drafter to make a name for himself as an electronic music producer; he says Venezuela is not quite ready for spaced out glitch-hop (yet!). It was the Belgian label Caoutchou Records that discovered his beats on Soundcloud: “I caught up with Joren A.K.A Ninjato. We followed each other through Soundcloud , started talking about a possible release and shared some music. Over the summer I wrote Joren because I was going to Germany and asked him if there were any festivals going down in Ghent around June… He told me about Peer Pressure Festival and at first, I was going to attend it as audience because I wanted to travel to Belgium. As it turned out, I was lucky enough to play at the Festival, and it really changed everything for me! That weekend was a great one! Sharing with so many talented producers and great people. I was so happy! “Vengeance” is Alvin & The Chipsets’ first album after releasing an EP on the Russian Nu Aura label. It actually took the duo two years to capture the right sound. By experimenting with different vintage recording techniques they finally reached that warm 80’s frequency they felt the album needed. Their sound can be described as a symbiosis between instrumental hip-hop and vintage-synth driven funk. He got into music back in ’96 as an MC, heavily inspired by Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubians etc. After his hip-hop years Digi got into other subcultures: the punk, hc, & noise scene before returning to black music: afrobeat, funk & dub. He started playing the saxophone in “Trio Cane” and after that he played synths + drum machines in the band “A Smile for Timbuctu”. Eventually Digi took all these influences to create his current project: Digi G’Alessio. The Purple Book is the third in a series of concept albums based on colours. The Yellow Book was out on Plynt records and stands for beats with crazy leads and happy bass lines. The Brown Book was out on Phonocake and was all about beatswith roots sounds and raw bass lines. A lot of the outcome is depending on the consumed beer: there was a dark, malty period (influenced by Stout beers), a fresh spring period with more IPA hoppy flavoured liquids and even an X-mas phase where they poured nothing but pungent christmasbeers. The mixture of hard & software, classic Roland and Korg synths, midi keys and pads are just a minor detail in the creative process. More faux pas went down when the Spongemagnet crew joined Caoutchou's rubber tour caravan through Eastern Europe. This is where the idea grew for a further collaboration. So finally, after releasing the well acclaimed 'Release the gimp' on the prestigious Th!n Consolation label, the Spongemagnet pack is back with a greatest hit tape called 'BEST OFF'! The partners in chrome dug deep into their machines to compile a 30 minute epic trip to Spongeland where everything is possible and where even you can be a *star*. Both cassette & VHS comes with beautiful hand crafted artwork by Kamargo. Visual imagery is provided by VJ/shaman Jaak De Digitale. Batfinks translated these life experiences into his unique quirky sound. Bibobleyboo is an old man that's lost his way in the world, he's a hermit and is scared of the outside and its people. The album was recorded in a hedgehog's home called 'Camp Cotton' which Batfinks could use whilst the hedgehog was away in Bulgaria to import stamps. The album will be released on International Cassette Store Day: 27th of September 2014 (on cassette / digital). Marly's parents were German travellers who spent the mid 70's touring their Ford Panel van around Australia. The cover art is one of the old photos his mum and dad took in that period. The typography was added by collaborator David Sankey, who also did the design on Tidy Kid's split release with Bibio back in 2010.
His new album 'Vector Garden Zone' consists of an eclectic ensemble of old and new tracks. "All these songs, like pretty much most of my songs are made in one sitting. I never really go back to tweak or do any additional production, it’s created, mixed and often close to mastered. Karen shows the feminine side of Karsten: the tracks on Vigilax are produced in drag, most frequently knee-length dressses with dropped waist - typical of the 1920's fashion. Also the cover art was made in this demeanor: Karen used all the audio cassettes as a canvas for her painting. Each cassette contains traces of that paint. The limited edition cassettes come with 3 digital bonus tracks incl. remixes from Rolando Simmons and WHRK. The Rephlex sound echoes over Vigilax as an archaic archetype. The record reflects a producer having fun in the studio, making simple songs, rather than working with a sophisticated set of rules of ideas. This freedom lead to the composition of these 9 tracks. Batfinks became part of the Caoutchou fam since he contributed the track 'Shamalaalaa' for the second Rubber Beats compilation back in '09. 5 years later we released 'Bibobleyboo' on our label and early 2016 he sent us new material; an album named 'Mosisac'. Later that year we heard the sad news that Ste had passed away. Batfinks was a mysterious character on whom we never really got a hold. When we talked, our conversations ended up in neologistic gibberish and laughter which was simultaneously amazing and funny. When we asked about his background to compose a promo text for his album this is what he wrote to us: "Learnt my first chords when I was 4 on a Casio MT-65 on the toilet which was very satisfying I must say. Learnt how to play 808 State and Sonz of Da Loop Era tunes when I was 7 with a mate of mine, Jim Noir. Spent a lot of time with my dad and brother going to bluegrass gigs and old folks homes. Young artist Joren Van Acker was inspired to visualise Peter's chilling and unsettling vibes by means of a charcoal drawing. His auditive experience is portrayed by a boat in an open sea, lost and wandering during the pitch-black night. The passenger of this audiovisual trip is stranded on a ship that is heading wherever, and is left behind with a feeling of confusion, anxiety and mostly audacity. As they want the musical and visual voyage to be unique, they produced only a very limited amount of physical releases that are enshrined in a handmade box and that include a cut-out of the original charcoal drawing. 'So If You Want' is the lyrical counterpart of the dark, at times unsettling 'Mosisac', and this compilation is a collection of mostly unreleased Batfinks tracks. He had been testing , with 'lathe cut vinyls', three albums, Dolly, False Fades and Wasps At Home. His family decided to carry on having a few albums made for his friends, later uploading them to Bandcamp. 'Suzy Said' and 'All the Same' are on the albums because Ste' had originally released them on cassettes. 'So If You Want' is unmistakably Batfinksesque, but we also discover another side of the multi-faceted artist. We've heard him sing before, but never on ten tracks in a row - and on such a serious note. Quirky. Multi-instrumental. Eclectic. Absurd. Touching. Out there. Godspeed, wherever you are.
