Application seeks to apply the regimented leaning principles of Japanese Itamae to their work, where each new task is meticulously studied before being undertaken. Resultantly, System Fork is a highly intricate piece of experimental techno, ranging from the opening watery drones of ‘Ambient A’ to the hand-crafted, chiming dub groove of ‘Steve Reich’s Ice Cream Van’ and more mechanical, Stroboscopic Artefact-esque textures on ‘Siren’. Application - Ambient B (3:14) 'System Fork’ was designed around the principle of Itamae. From a visit to Japan, Application learnt about how these students (Itamae) would watch the Sushi Master for 5 years before being given their first task. In the same way, every detail in ‘System Fork’ was described and thought about before any work in the studio was done. Application are Martin & Richard Dust, two of the three-parts that make up The Black Dog. But these groups are not musically interchangeable in any form. The Black Dog have no plan or rules, when they go into the studio they do what we want. With Application that isn’t the case, there’s a set of rules and an internal manifesto that took two years to fully realise before any creative processes started in the studio. Having rules meant ideas are abandoned a lot quicker than with The Black Dog. But they rules aren’t constrictive, approached as an opportunity for creative freedom rather than something oppressive, it’s seen like a set of walls around a field. This system created an interesting internal conflict between artist and designer. The setup is also entirely different starting with custom drum racks and bass sounds built specifically for Application. Everything is built from the ground up starting with the bass and drums, and everything is drive by those patterns and grooves. Working with Human & Shaun Bloodworth, Application also applied more design aesthetics into the artwork, videos & photographs. These will all become the prototypes to a live show with video and visuals. released June 30, 2014

Each artist selected their favourite track and given the freedom to do what they wanted with the track. Application explain: "We went to see Pye Corner Audio in Sheffield, the table was festooned with equipment that looked like it has just been dropped out of a toy box. We immediately liked him. Beneath is so clever with the way he organises his beats, we had to invite him to be part of this project as we’ve loved everything he’s released. Geiom’s approach and ear for detail has always been attractive to us and we really wanted to hear what he’d do with one of these tracks. We knew he would create something different that we wouldn’t do ourselves. Scanner has been a good friend over the years and we’ve been closely following the very different path he’s taken, he’s always doing something we’d never have thought of, so we had to get him involved. We’re big fans of Russell Haswell’s work and have always enjoyed watching him work live, it’s as if he’s trying to put something back together while it’s melting! Sometimes we don’t understand what Mark Fell is doing but we always enjoy the experience. He drags you further and further into his world and not many artists can do that.
