We are a duo: Claudio "The Greek" Mariani and Valentino "Vigo" Orciuolo. We have been playing electronic music since 1997, each one of us in his own way but both using the same technologies: the first towers, the first cathode-ray tube screens, the first midi keyboards and controllers - we needed a van to move all our stuff for a gig! We have only composed and performed the music we felt inside of us since 2012 – that is when our paths crossed. The “retro” music we make is a genuine expression of what lies within ourselves, it is an emotionally evocative music rather than just entertainment. We use old synths which we are particularly fond of: a Roland JX-8P, a 6-voice polyphonic synth and a 1984 Korg EX-800 also used by Vangelis for Blade Runner's soundtrack, but also we have the Waldorf Rocket an amazing big fat noisy bass-synth and Roland Sh32 a powerful and complete synth-rack. As synchronization of time-based devices such as drum machines, we use a Roland TR 505 and a Korg DDD1. We also use emulators, particularly those of Native Instruments Reaktor for their modular versatility. For years Ableton Live 9, a powerful and intuitive software, has been our only digital audio workstation (DAW) software. Every now and then we give in to our geek side and use Renoise. It was in just about every 12 year old kid's Christmas present stash that year, subsequently becoming one of the most popular games of the 90s. The fact that the game is still enjoyed over 2 decades later, being played on classic gaming compilations, emulators, tablets, and mobile phones, is testament to its enduring legacy, and its endless "replayability". This isn't just true of Streets of Rage 2 - it's predecessor, Streets of Rage burst on the scene in the late 80s, paving the way for side-scrolling "beat em ups" for years to come. Streets of Rage 3 was an enjoyable, if flawed, addition to the series which featured some insanely hyperactive gameplay. One of the most enduring things about this series of games are their soundtracks. The unforgettable music originally composed and produced by Yuzo Koshiro, Kyoji Kato, and Motohiro Kawashima, have long stayed in the memory, and when heard, bring back a haze of nostalgia - transporting us back to the early 90s when the world was a very different place, and our only responsibility in life was to wipe out Mr X and his enormous evil empire of street thugs, punks, ninjas, samurais, bikers, boxers, kick boxers, obese baseball players, electric whip chicks, jet pack equipped kamikaze psychos, and whatever the hell else was at his disposal! We are massive video game fans here at 30th Floor Records, and we're thrilled to present the 'Synths of Rage' compilation album for your nostalgic enjoyment. Each of the 24 producers from around the globe featured here have picked their favourite track from all 3 Streets of Rage soundtracks, reimagined it, and remoulded it to their unique style. Not every single track from the soundtracks are included here, think of it more of a selection of the best bits. We've presented the album in chronological order of each level of the games to give it that extra slice of nostalgia. Following on from the huge success of their 'Synths of Rage' (bit.ly/1d4NyKm), and 'Synth Fighters' (bit.ly/1fYX57m) albums, the collective have now focussed their talents on recreating the unforgettable music from the original Mortal Kombat trilogy. Originally composed and produced by Dan Forden, the music was unlike anything we'd heard in a video game up to that time. Darker than what our 8-bit and 16-bit video gaming sensory palettes were used to, the sounds took us deep into a foreboding world of certain doom, as we prepared to do battle with some of the toughest fighters we'd ever been face to face with. Featuring 22 tracks by a collective of incredible electronic producers, we present each track in the order of stages as they appeared throughout each game. As with all Console Crusaders works, these are not simply cover versions, these are full blown reinterpretations according to each artist's unique sound and vision. Go ahead, test your might!! With UK producer SECONDSON back behind his vintage analogue console, Scores is the perfect bridge between IV and MAINE’s follow up (you guessed it, V) pencilled in for a mid 2017 release. Featuring 4 previously released songs accompanied by 4 brand new songs, MAINE‘s Michel Dupay wanted to use Scores "to emphasise how the subtle layers and delicate sounds when combined make the fragile, almost ethereal basis of most of my songs. My producer, SECONDSON explores all avenues of the material, and continually deconstructs and re-evaluates the songs to essentially destroy and recreate them until they almost become pieces of time rather than musical pieces.” Dupay and SECONDSON were brought together by their mutual love of analogue equipment, with enough instruments and studio hardware between them to build a workspace so fine tuned, most modern musicians would feel lost without a library of VST's. Scores features not only some of the music industry’s most cherished synthesizers, but some techniques and effects that are unique to their studio. MAINE has developed a way of using a bowed guitar through an old Roland tape echo machine, to create the long subtle sweeps you hear throughout Scores. There is also a reclaimed piano soundboard that is bowed with ribbon, horse hair, fishing wire and zip-ties. The soundboard is also used as a makeshift reverb unit with sounds transported through it via a modified active monitor which reverberates the entire board when activated and re-recorded again. It’s ethereal, timeless and endless. As with MAINE’s first three EP’s and debut full length album, the sound is solidified and mixed in an analogue environment with SECONDSON’s old Soundtrack mixing desk. A desk that was "frankensteined" from parts loosely salvaged from Rockfield Studios and even one of Gary Numan’s old recording consoles. MAINE blends distant vocals, manipulated reverb, strings and fragile melodies into a fabric that is bordering on other-worldly.
