Following both the 30th anniversary reissue of their debut album Hunting High and Low (1985) and the release of a new record, Cast in Steel, a-ha will complete the expansion of their early catalogue in October. Expanded editions of the band’s third, fourth and fifth albums, Stay on These Roads (1988), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1990) and Memorial Beach (1993) will join the new 4CD/1DVD box set version of Hunting High and Low and an expanded Scoundrel Days (1986), released alongside a 25th anniversary edition of Hunting and the band’s Ending on a High Note Tour. (That farewell was somewhat nicely nullified by the new album, a one-off reunion to be followed with a world tour kicking off this weekend at the Rock in Rio Festival–the same festival where a-ha performed before a record-setting 198,000 paying fans in 1991.) As with previous deluxe editions, all lovingly compiled by longtime a-ha fan and reissue producer/engineer extraordinaire Bill Inglot, the albums will feature the remastered original albums augmented with a host of bonus tracks, some released (remixes and live material which appeared on various 12″ singles over the years) but most unheard (bonus discs for Stay on These Roads and Memorial Beach feature entirely previously unreleased tracks). East of the Sun, West of the Moon comes with a bonus DVD featuring Live in South America–a recording of the band’s 1991 Rock in Rio set making its debut on the format. While a-ha strangely failed to capture the ears of American audiences after the near-perfect Hunting High and Low, there’s much to enjoy on these albums. The theatrical Stay on These Roads, a third consecutive team-up with producer Alan Tarney, features rousing epics like “The Blood That Moves the Body” and the title track, bouncy dance-rock tracks like “Touchy!” and “You Are the One” and a re-recorded version of “The Living Daylights,” their theme to the 1987 James Bond film of the same name. East of the Sun, West of the Moon offered brooding pop in the form of “Early Morning,” “(Seemingly) Nonstop July” and a stirring cover of The Everly Brothers’ “Crying in the Rain,” while Memorial Beach, recorded at Prince’s Paisley Park with purple collaborator David Z, pushed the trio into a more modern rock style with the powerful “Dark is the Night for All” and a re-recorded version of “Move to Memphis,” first featured on the band’s 1992 compilation Headlines and Deadlines: The Hits of a-ha.
