Defined by its industrial hues, distorted edges, thundering basslines and a resolutely floor-focused disposition, the Vault Series sound is both unique and pertinent, separatist without introspect, and containing an awareness of context whilst following its own divergent trajectory. After twelve EPs that have continued to refine the message with an ever-widening bed of nuances, comes the first full-length release from the collective’s mastermind and chief Subjected. Without compromising Vault Series ethics, ‘Zero’ is a concept-free and entirely frill-less dancefloor album that vends the label’s recognisable trademarks over ten advantageously assaulting tracks. Opening with swirling, ominous storm clouds on “M”, the album unfurls with signature Subjected textures and foreboding atmospheres, propelled by pistons and the steely functionality of solid industrial-facing frameworks. Resounding basslines growl throughout, reaching new depths on the dub-toned “Concept 3” and pealing “Rancor”, with clanging machinery and crushing distortion characterising tracks elsewhere, such as “SD1” and “VX800”. For the first edition, the underground imprint—famed for its idiosyncratic blend of raw industrial sounds, shadowy timbres and punishing basslines—taps three contemporary peers for reworks of Subjected’s menacing “005.7”. On the A-side, Mote-Evoler mainstay Shifted turns in a poised and powerful “Reduction” mix, cleaning off “005.7”’s original rust and clatter to deliver a more sleek and well-oiled machine. Next up Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer turn their Tuff City Kids guise on “005.7”, steering it’s steely hydraulics and caustic edge into warmer house climes with plush chords and crashes. On the B-side Modularz man Developer brings in his own haunted melody to the table, plied to a cantering beat to utterly transform “005.7” once more. The package closes with Vault Series member Mørbeck taking things right back to their dark and brooding origins. There’s very little known about Mistake Made. No records or releases exist to date, but they’ve impressed Vault chief Subjected enough to have them join the sequestered Berlin-based crew. And in sublime compliance with the Vault Series creed, this debut effort from the shadowy outfit presents yet another set of functioning and frill-free dancefloor material, complete with a rusted-through hue of its own. On the A-side “Wrist” jumps straight in with marching intent, complete with fidgety hat work that’s both anxious and infectious. Then on the flip, “Ricochet” opens with field recordings tossed into a stormy concoction of ticks, hats and fuzzy atmospherics, teamed up here with one of those basslines that’ll keep you glued to the floor. “Indec” then concludes in signature Vault Series style; an ominous, growling number rattled with alarm bells and screeching, clangorous detail. It’s one of those monstrous slow-burners that leaves you wounded yet longing for more. All in all, a rounded first release from a new techno tour de force.
