Shortly afterwards, he started working with Malcolm Cecil (one-half of the legendary pioneer Moog duo, TONTO aka Tonto's Expanding Headband). He continued to hone his woodwind and keyboard skills while working as a sound engineer, and in 1980 he self-released his first solo album Lullaby for the Hearts of Space. He was the first signing on the nascent Hearts of Space label in 1984 with The Way Home. Later HOS solo releases include Galaxies (1988) and Secret Rooms (1990). His skills as an audio engineer are especially apparent on the latter, which contains striking binaural 3-D sound effects on the passages linking musical pieces. Braheny is as adept at crafting instruments as he is at creating gorgeous melodies, having built many of the instruments used on his four Hearts of Space solo releases. This includes the "Mighty Serge" modular analog synthesizer, fashioned from a design by Serge Tcherepnin and assembled in 1977, and his trademark Steiner EWI, which he built from the original design by Nyle Steiner. In addition to Rain, his 1995 collaboration with TIM CLARK, Braheny also joined forces with STEVE ROACH and RICHARD BURMER for Western Spaces in 1987, and with Roach and MICHAEL STEARNS for Desert Solitaire in 1989. Kevin Braheny Fortune is a true Renaissance Man. He is a multi-instrumentalist – saxes, flutes, clarinets, oboe, guitar, bass, keyboards, synthesizers, and percussion. He has been a session musician and recording engineer for over 30 years working with many greats including Miles Davis. He’s been involved in leading-edge electronics, prototyping and building his own synthesizers and other electronic goodies, and contributing to the building of at least seven studios in L.A. and the Bay Area. And at the same time he has had a parallel career in the healing arts as a bodyworker, a Tantra teacher, author, and counselor working with healing sexual energy not only with abuse survivors but with those wishing to learn and expand their horizons. He is also a gifted intuitive who channels the Grand Spirit, Dr. Peebles. American ambient musician with a talent for creating his own instruments. Has worked together with, among others, Tim Clark, Michael Stearns, and Steve Roach and was a member of the early Moog band TONTO. Has changed his name since to Kevin Fortune. The vistas of outer space, sonically evoked and evocative - vast, majestic, at once awesome and beckoning, otherworldly yet strangely familiar.
Travel through musical starfields. Experience the Milky Way rising over the horizon of an alien world. Look back in time brought present by the ancient light of the eldest stars, eternal witnesses to all the happenings of time and space. And experience the emotions of the traveller. Exhilaration. Awe. Poignant nostalgia, both for home and for unimaginable vistas never to be seen again save in imagination. And a jazzy, joyful return at journey's end.
