Берет и смешивает минимал, эмбиент, хаус и техно, и здорово же смешивает! А за ремикс на одну из его собственных композиций взялся сам Джеймс Холдон – The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix). Nathan Fake's debut album doesn't suddenly change the course of electronic music, as some of his more intense partisans can claim. For a start, the combination of almost childlike winsomeness and often unsettled glitch beats and noise inevitably calls to mind older work by acts like the Boards of Canada. But Drowning in a Sea of Love, drawing on inspiration from both the U.K. and further afield in Europe for its particular hybrid, is a fine listen regardless, a slippery and sprightly combination that further shifts the perceived context of post-techno experimentation from an urban to a "rural" mental geography, for lack of a better term. The cover photograph of a small English village helps set the tone explored further by the sound of the squeeze box on "Stops" and the title of "The Sky Was Pink," suggests a long-stretched-out sunset with its sprawling guitar (or guitar-like) solo. Again, this is not, per se, new -- Ultramarine notably sought a rural prog/techno fusion at its best and sometimes achieved it very well, to name just one act. But Fake's ear for what has already become an established tradition in electronics makes this a new kind of roots music, and his one-person compositions can have the weight of a full band, thus the dramatic cascade and pace of "Grandfathered," which is not far removed from M83 in ways, and is appropriate given his obvious love for shoegaze as filtered through computers (à la Ulrich Schnauss or, somewhat indirectly, Fennesz) elsewhere. The lush melancholia of "Bumblechord" and "You Are Here" are begging to be used on a film soundtrack somewhere if they haven't already, while "Fell" makes for a fine conclusion, drawing together all the album's best elements into a serene climax. Sweet Exorcist's C.C.E.P., Bogus Order's Zen Brakes, and Nathan Fake's Drowning In A Sea Of Love: what do they all have in common? They are/were the first albums to be released on highly influential, movement-shaping indie electronic labels. If Border Community becomes even half as big as Warp and Ninja Tune ”“ and, judging from the consistency and immeasurable quality of everything James Holden's label has yet put out, they have a serious shot ”“ that'll just be another in a long list of reasons to remember the name Nathan Fake (which actually is his real name). Previous to this, all I'd really heard of Fake was the Holden remix of "The Sky Was Pink," which was the centerpiece of Rob da Bank's Fabric 24 mix. His Satoshi Tomiie-released Watlington Street EP and other assorted singles all painted a picture of the young Reading resident as a straightforward, albeit highly talented, progressive producer. So each time I put on Sea Of Love, I had to keep checking to make sure I'd put in the right disc. This Sea was swimming in downtempo IDM, expanding Fake's previously shown love of cascading synths and apparent affection towards Boards Of Canada. This possibly excludes the original "The Sky Was Pink" and "You Are Here," as those two cuts render electronically tortured guitars and/or organically strained synths in such a way as to almost make them post-rock, though they're surely not out of place on this impressive debut. In light of the fact that Fake is a pure laptop producer with no stated DJ aspirations, this variance makes sense; but considering that he's only in his early twenties, this level of believable flexibility, maturity, and melodical prowess is remarkable. To be sure, Fake is one to watch for a long, long time. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and this album is a big one. Keep 'em coming, BC.

Reading's Nathan Fake began his career in the farm country of Norfolk in the U.K., where he learned how to play basic acoustic instruments before finding a love of the electronic genres. Fake moved to Reading at the age of 19, which gained his recordings significantly more exposure, and his demos found their way to producer/remixer/DJ James Holden. Holden immediately signed Fake (his actual last name) to his Border Community imprint and released a set of 12"s (Outhouse and The Sky Was Pink) that put him on the global dance scale in terms of recognition. Fans from all electronic genres immediately took to Fake's distinctive sound (including luminaries like François K and Satoshi Tomiie), and his recordings began to be some of the most in demand of 2004. Several 12"s on the Traum imprint followed in 2005, and Fake released his debut full-length, Drowning in a Sea of Love on Border Community, in March of 2006.
